When unpacking first falls on the right attractive design. The stability is sufficient, although the (to the detriment of the design) would more stable. As but one should deal with hard drives generally very cautious, I prefer this from nothing; In case of doubt, you can stabilize the unit by additional aids.
When connecting the power supply, the hard drive remains off initially. Switching on and off can be explained by two ways:
a) by connecting / disconnecting the USB cable or
b) using a button on the rear panel (switch When pressed short, off: a few seconds holding)
This is very convenient, because then the hard drive on when USB connection time together with the computer on and off, but it can also be turned off at any time on or explicitly. Good ventilation is thanks to large ventilation slots on 3 sides (above 100%, down 95%, rear 60% of the area [about]) ensured.
The unit is very quiet and also sufficiently fast (about 125-160MB / s read + write on my notebook, but could mglw on computer side, depending on the USB controller used. Also higher [or lower] be). When connecting via USB, the drive is recognized as a universal external mass storage and can thus be fully utilized as such.
Comes the hard disk with an MS-DOS boot sector and a (Windows) NTFS partition, which extends over the entire capacity of the drive. In addition to the course given in the description Reformatting to HFS + for example by MacOS any other partitioning + formatting is possible - there is no device-specific restrictions. I have provided the board with GPT boot sector and Ext4 file system and use them with Kubuntu Linux 14.10.
Conclusion: Thanks to the elegant design and very quiet operation, the plate is excellent as a "living room hard disk" used. Thanks to its high capacity and speed, as well as unrestricted, direct disk access, I can recommend the 5TB model also people who handle with the greatest amount of data and this back and forth quickly want / need. A thoughtful, good product at a fair price!
