From the outset the sounds of John McLaughlin (guitar) create a bewitching atmosphere. Borrowing from blues, his melodies are never aggressive, but overflowing with imagination, with just enough space and silence. Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Joe Zawinul (fender, keyboards and organ) offer a unique crystalline game, Wayne Shorter plays the soprano for the first time and it pretty well succeeded him (Steve Lacy said later in game terms, Wayne was really shiny). This is also the last record of Tony Williams within the collective miles. The drummer, remember, was impressed with the early 60. A real electric battery. Here, the game is different from the one he proposed in the second great quintet of Miles. More subdued but nevertheless impressive. It even offers very rock strikes and a surprising groove. Dave Holland's double bass and electric bass, and offers a huge support to the whole. Atemporal Music, if not universal, this drive is a nugget which one does can happen. Beyond of genres and partisans minds. A landmark in the music of the twentieth century. Or better: a meeting.
