It is Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe which is attributed adding a seventh string to the bass viol, one of the noblest instruments of the seventeenth century. Richer and more expressive than that of his predecessors, his music, and arranged, deployed an impressive range of sounds that only virtuosos gambists can put forward. Experts in the art of their instrument, Wieland Kuijken and Jordi Savall shed light on the genius of a man with innovative spirit and, in all likelihood, meditative. Thus, in a relationship that you describe as fusion, their stylish play, balanced and racy allows us to better understand the superficial and misleading indolence austerity of his concertante duets. Sober - almost chaste - and total abnegation, their interpretation takes us on a musical universe, certainly sometimes dark and disturbing, but oh so delicious. Edited by Astraea in 1976 and in 1992, these two albums had long since become not found, or only at prohibitive prices generally. This reissue undertaken by the Vox label Alia is welcome, especially at the price where it is proposed to us! A great opportunity for those who had missed out on these little treasures to relieve their consciences without, for this, too relieve their wallets.
