Now I have already tested some lenses on my D5100 and has been disappointed with regard to image sharpness with the exception of fixed focal lengths by the Bank. Especially the outrageously expensive 80-400er Nikon disappointed comparatively across the board. The sharpness and the autofocus of the Tamron 70-300 are mE overwhelming. It is similar razor-sharp as my 35er fixed focal length - and my eyes are very sensitive for that matter. The VC does an excellent job. The image is virtually frozen when you half press the shutter button. After only a few shots through all focal lengths and apertures through I am completely satisfied and would recommend this telephoto lens on a Nikon D5100 every highly enough.
It is interesting that I had previously also a Tamron 70-300 had no VC to my Sony SLT-35 and also I have been impressed by the image quality of the Tamron, but on the D5100, the images are even sharper. Absolute buy recommendation. Also from the haptics her very satisfactory for me!
