"The Wolf and the Lion" is a novel with a contemporary style but who is going to a bygone era. So yes, I know it is quite disturbing and I was frankly disturbed because I appreciated the content of the novel, its plot well put together but the hitch is that I struggled to believe me at the time of Henry III. I think it is because of two things: firstly the style is very modern so, and secondly the descriptions are not sufficiently provided so we did not feel the sixteenth century. I did not get the image "postcard" that is inserted deep in my skull if you understand what I mean ... And not for me, it is not enough to tell you that we are in 1587 so I guess I'm ... But it is not so serious because ultimately it is not the primary interest of the novel, which is not a historical novel supposedly the way! Well a bit anyway ... But why do I say that this is not really a historical novel? For the author invents characters that have not existed and takes a lot of liberties with the story itself. Personally, it did not bother me (but that does not help me in terms of non-like I was in 1587). No, the primary interest of the author is to tell us the secrets of power with the machinations, conspiracies and all that goes with it. Definitely, yes, we can consider that this novel is a kind of thriller! And the impression is particularly strong when a lot of hard to imagine in 1587 (I insist too much, eh?). In addition, the style is quite fluid (a few convoluted sentences recorded) and the author has a neat pen. Let us now focus on the plot which is very well put together. It can seem simple at first, but Denis Lépée very well studied his subject and the thread does not suffer from inconsistency (if we forget of course the invented characters and the liberties taken with the story). I really enjoyed myself on the first and last pages. In between, I admit that some passages have for me lacked pace. I somehow landed by now ... Too bad! For example, I found the love story has a bit soft in the novel, we are in the warmth and feeling level in the reservoir above. Yes, it lacks a little passion. The characters finally miss a tad deep. It does not necessarily attached to them ... But really the primary interest of the book lies in the plot, if you like games or the machinations that run power, conspiracies and fighting capes and swords, then this novel is for you!
