This short novel portrays the novelist and a strange couple made up of an old man and a young woman. The meeting of the three protagonists is a very fleeting moment in the room of a pension at the foot of the Dolomites. The author first describes his vision of the couple installed in the room, the beauty of the woman, her smile, her confusion, then plunged back into his thoughts studious around Yiddish translations, an activity he particularly cherishes. The young woman, that is discovered to be the daughter of the old gentleman then spoke, she first tells about his life, his mother, his father, his daughter very special place in a rather peculiar man who at the end of its life is random a letter carried in a cultural center (it is factor) a form of redemption in reading the Kabbalah. The end of the novel comes back as a loop that closes on the fleeting interview in dolomitaine inn, this time from the perspective of the young woman. This short novel is, again, an exercise in style succeeds perfectly. De Luca succeeds in a few lines, without emphasis, to present the greatest human tragedy, the worst fears, and at the same time let the reader make his choice or not delve into the necessary questions. I liked the metaphor, symbolism and highly successful immersion of the writer in female psychology. I liked his relationship with the water, I love that once again (he had started in Montedidio) that describe physical love as a "swimming" between two waters, between two bodies. Without the stuff of "Three horses", this little romance is a new literary gem that I highly recommend.
