As they had to settle for Live Over Europe that, on paper at least, promised much juicier than its predecessor, Way We Walk, would it only because there was a setlist with more room for the group in its acceptance 70s ... Harder was the fall.
It is a shame to say this but, by dint of great professionals in complete control of them, the three members of Genesis and their two regular accompanists (Thompson and Mr. Stuermer) bored a bit where we would like so get carried away. So yes, what is concretely proposed often come foaming at the mouth even if we have to do this, if fader few tasteless tubes.
And then there was the song of Collins. Already on The Way We Walk, we had to undergo tone cuts on certain securities. This time it is the entirety of recordings is affected by the limitations of a vocalist older. And finally, there is the interpretation of the group, felt that overall they are doing the job on autopilot or worse!, They have no other choice given the show offered around the musical performance ( see the documentary part of the DVD When in Rome to be convinced). So when, as on the currently billetée audio version, we have to provide the sound ecstasy that never comes really, it's frankly disabling.
Formally, with a setlist so rather clever and well flared, Live Over Europe is not a bad album in public he just sorely lack this passion, this epic spirit that characterized the best live performances of the group. And this is not the choice of an artificial assembly of several concerts that will catch everything. Too bad, really a shame to see such a beautiful, large group end (for now?) On a note so dull.
To choose, if you really want a testimony of this tour, go for the DVD cited above, it is not a panacea but at least the advantage of a certain truth. Otherwise, there are other live Genesis (from 73 to that of Seconds Out through Three Sides Live) that make eminently better justice to this giant of the 70s.
