I've set up a user including release to my personal files (about 40 Gb; 50,000 files) to secure and twice a week to keep up to date with synchronization software (PureSync). Default is that the backup only the files exist on the server that are on the hard drive of my PC.
The first move the files over the Explorer went quickly across the stage, the first synchronizing then but the big shock: PureSync reported that in the backup on the server are over 30,000 (!!!) files that are not on the hard drive of my PC are available, which made me very suspicious. These files were all in hidden subfolders named .wdmc and were all image files.
My research revealed that these files were generated by two processes called wdmcserver and wdphotomerger who have the task of generating for each image in a release a thumbnail. For this purpose a hidden subfolder called .wdmc is created in each (!!) folder of the share, where each image which is in the folder more (!!!) Thumbnails are created (lt. WD Support then used these images as previews when you look at the folder via Media Player / remote access and are a big advantage for the user. Note: for my release was neither media nor streaming cloud service activated)!. About SSH shell can stop the processes but which do not permanently disable, ie when the server is restarted, the processes and the indexing to be restarted again.
I turned in the matter also to the WD Support, who also replied very quickly, but unfortunately could only confirm the above problem and has discouraged me from stopping the process (which is obvious, because if the hard drive permanently with the creating subfolders and thumbnails is employed, which increases the loss of drive and WD is pleased to again).
How much are innovative and thought the above processes shown by the fact that they are probably in the drop in the share public, most of your media collection, and which is usually used for media streaming, no thumbnails invests! ??! Even though I did not want to have there also the subfolders and rather short wait for my media player displays the images small, this restriction is completely pointless!
Oh yes: the software package also includes a WD backup software called "smart" goods. This I tried then, after 2 days continuous operation were from my 40 Gb about 25Gb copied (ie, the transmission rate is very low) and apparently this software has problems with files larger than 50Mb, because these files (mainly PDFs) were loud SmartWare not be copied for further two days. Of course, no subfolders / thumbnails are in the preinstalled WD SmartWare release erzeugtdas is apparently the only smart it.
Currently only consoles me, that I bought the cloud on Amazon Mirror as lightning bid at the two built WD Red 2Gb hard drives. Therefore, I have made no financial loss because I now umsteige on an empty housing of Synology, in which I will install the hard drives. The solution is a bit more expensive to use however.
