We are immersed from the outset in history with these men without identity memory. Because although they have forgotten what they were before being locked in the boxes, they have kept the memory of their world. They also kept a gestural memory which spontaneously manifests as a reflex. Thus, everyone will discover the qualities or defects: some will wield the sword, will have a talented mage or watchman that will not have the other.
It was quickly won over by these men overwhelmed and pursued by a horde of warriors.
The author has done a tremendous job on these three characters. They each have their character, their peculiarities and they are not alike for a sub! Each conquered me in his own way and never for the same reasons. We learn to know them while they are discovered and I was attached to each of them, there was no one to be more popular than the other.
The story is very compelling, and has a very realistic tone.
Already, curiosity pincer us, we want to know who these men. What have they done to be locked in boxes, to be searched by a whole army? Slowly but surely, the author gives us information, details about them. And although in the end we do know much more about them in the beginning, new questions will form and there will always be a myriad of issues to keep us in suspense.
The sequence of events are incredibly well crafted. Nothing is left to chance. The elements combine beautifully in a set of credibility.
Moreover, the universe is really nice. We discover the kingdom and its structure as much from the perspective of the small village in the middle of nowhere in the capital at around the monarch. While our heroes are constantly hunted, we are not caught in a frantic throughout the race book, but drawn into a few interspersed leak quieter passages in which the protagonists will arise and will melt to the population. Thus, we will discover the customs and habits of the people. Big bonus point for me, there are necromancers (I love this type of characters, whether friendly or not).
Although this is a fantasy book, the descriptions are not too important, which makes it really light and fluid narrative.
Also, the layout is nice: a line is skipped once the discussions were. This aerates the text and is comfortable to play.
So, overall a great book, well built and very addictive. A very good book fantasy. I'd be happy to continue the adventure with Volume 2: The Son of the Moon.
