Interlude (Audio CD)

Customer Review

Jamie Cullum - back to the jazz roots! "Interlude" - the sixth album of the 1979-born British pianist, singer and composer Jamie Cullum focused entirely on jazz music - for the first time since he was released in 2003 album "Twentysomething". The result of the sessions is extremely worth hearing because of jazzy Focused awareness and musical presence of all artists. Special highlights of the album are the two vocal duo Jamie Cullum with one hand, the British singer Laura Mvula ("Good Morning Heartache") and on the other hand, of course, the Grammy winner and current jazz superstar Gregory Porter ("Do not Let Me Be Misunderstood"). Both vocal features are supported by a musician ensemble expanded with almost big band proportions to a string ensemble creates a powerful and grooving dynamics. But, the "Misunderstood" arrangement leaves with repeatedly withdrawn instrumental parts the incisive vocals by Cullum and Porter room for sonic propagation. "Do not Let Me Be Misunderstood" convinced with the strong vocals of both singers before syncopated jazz groove that promote the powerful brass riffs over and over again. This broad Ausmusizierung based on an arrangement of Riaan Vosloo, simultaneously bassist Nostaliga 77 will probably not please everyone jazz purists. But, the duo Cullum / Porter is absolutely worth listening to! This title will be certainly a legendary sound icon of 2014!

Just a pity that the usual furious piano playing Jamie Cullum rarely found on this album expression as Jamie Cullum is the "simple" musicians of the ensemble and characterizes the shots, especially with his singing. On several titles like "Interlude", "Walkin '", "My One and Only Love" and "Out of This World" assumes pianist Ross Stanley from Nostalgia 77 alone the piano part - and Jamie Cullum focuses entirely on the song. Incredibly intimate the finale of the album with the ballad "Make Someone Happy", the highly concentrated vocals Jamie Cullum accompanied only by pianist Ross Stanley.

Conclusion: Purchase tip for this absolutely worth listening to Jazz music!

Jamie Cullum succeeded with "Twentysomething" in 2003, a surprise hit that has sold over 2.5 million copies for the best selling jazz album of England. Meanwhile, Jamie Cullum, has its concert appearances almost every time are an event, published several albums with his characteristic mixture of pop, rock and jazz, among other things, "The Pursuit" (2009) and "Momentum" (2013). But now, return and focus on jazz!

The idea for "Interlude" was created in the context of the ongoing since April 2010 radio show of Jamie Cullum on BBC Radio 2. As moderator of this weekly jazz program Cullum has introduced there over time numerous jazz musicians and their music, played and met the musicians themselves. The newly unveiled album goes back to a visit by Benedic Lamdin in the radio show. It was agreed together with Nostalgia 77 some recording days in the legendary "Fish Factory" -Analog studio to book in North London, into a dense studio atmosphere without ever new retakes some jazz standards with good jazz friends directly ("live") on analog take tape. The core group of 77 formed Nostaliga for Benedic Lamdin as a producer and sound engineer and the musicians Riaan Vosloo, James Allsoop, Fulvio Sigurta, Ross Stanley and Tim Giles.

An officially provided by the record company Iceland on YouTube 9-minute video documentary gives a visual impression of "Interlude" musicians in action and the studio situation to "Interlude". Jamie Cullum commented in some shots. The video is available at: Googling "Jamie Cullum 'Interlude' Album Trailer". (Video) images of Gregory Porter is not found here, however, although excerpts from "Misunderstood" hear are (probably no image rights have been granted for it). After all, the vocal duet Cullum is illustrated with Laura Mvula. And to see is a gigantic analog tape machine - our impression probably the Studer 16-track 2-inch analog Bank recorders on whose coils rotated 5-cm-tape (this tape machine presented at least a few years ago the owner of the founded in 2003 Fish Factory Studios as a distinctive feature of his studio).

=== === Jamie Cullum and Photography
Although Jamie Cullum is a big fan of photography, there are no photos to find out the studio recordings for this album on the CD booklet - a pity! The CD is due to an ongoing cooperation Jamie Cullum with the German camera manufacturer Leica also the red Leica logo, as Jamie Cullum apparently passionately photographed (with Leica cameras). On the US tour Cullum in 2014 originated images, some of Jamie Cullum, part of Leica photographer Michael Agel has taken on the trip and on and offstage. When CD-DVD deluxe version of "Interlude" can be seen in a small photo booklet some of these photos. These Jamie Cullum: "I always had a soft spot for photography since I had saved my mother's old camera from the attic I always wanted to be one of those classic, silent photographers that capture what is happening on the road, but I'm too noisily.. " All this is a beautiful story, but not much to do with the album "Interlude". Here beautiful atmospheric studio recordings would have been more appropriate by the musicians of this album session - after all, there are the album trailer on YouTube ...
