This novel is set in the English countryside during the Second World War. The men left for the front, and on farms are not that old, reformed and women. But England needs food, and it is young girls across the country who volunteer for hard work in the fields. Mr Lawrence does not see a good eye on his farm arrival of three young urban style old pin-up, but it can not bear alone with his son, reformed for medical reasons, the running of his farm. Prue, Stella and Ag, meanwhile, arrive freshly émoulues their training of volunteers, and ready to work hard to participate in the war effort. The adaptation of each other is not done without difficulty, and provides an opportunity for the author to exercise gently ironic pen on small through each. A pleasant and interesting book, which almost makes us forget the rigors of war. A good read, I advise those who do not like the stories of battles but appreciate the descriptions of life that continues, even in times of war.
