Step by step, we discover the past of Scarlett and Aidan, and how they are related even though she had absolutely no conscience. Their relationship is complicated from the outset, because of their past, their present behavior but also the lies and manipulations that seem to be the specialty of Aidan, and that make it unreliable, or downright worrisome! Let us be clear: in a book, it might seem romantic or sexy, but in real life, this kind of attitude would make me flee to know!
Although he appears pinup, Scarlett sorely lacking insurance. Men, she prefers to leave them before they have time to hurt, she always chooses also men who are not likely to hurt him. Aidan can only make her suffer, first because he is the brother of Romain secondly because Aidan is very, very complicated. Yet he manages to lead in a relationship, rather strange at times, but very intense. Scarlett is moved by the cracks that hints at and ends up diving into her memories to understand it.
I struggled to identify Aidan early: on one hand, it seems to be the archetype of the millionaire businessman, confident, bossy. But soon, he shows a very vulnerable time, to the point that I even wondered if there was not a history of twins, so I felt to deal with two different people. As we advance these two personalities come together and it is understood better. Yet as Scarlett, whenever they believe that their relationship progresses, there is a sensational discovery that challenges the relationship. There is indeed cause to question the motivations Aidan: he really loves Scarlett, he obsessed over it, or is it just a pawn in his revenge against his family ? For Aidan is at war against her father and brother, and he does not hesitate to use all means to win. Only with Scarlett that allows itself to be vulnerable, providing hardness front to the outside world. The influence of the young woman on her is very deep, aunt Aidan no mistake elsewhere. Scarlett has the power to make him happy, or destroy it, which is scary enough in itself. There are no half measures with him.
What makes the great interest of this novel is the psychology of the two protagonists. The story itself is pretty standard, made of "I love you me either." See Scarlett and Aidan compete, get closer, support, be mutually suffering is what makes the salt of the story. Note that the pen of Georgia Caldera is still alive, the pages are linked together without trouble, and sensual scenes are at once hot, moving without ever being vulgar and serve the story helping to advance the relationship and revelations.
The title also makes sense over reading: Scarlett, a man like Aidan is "out of reach", since it does not even consider being able to build a relationship. For Aidan, Scarlett is THE perfect woman, and he, who considers himself so below her, sees her on a pedestal and can not imagine one day have the chance to live his dream.
