The Slow Regard of Silent Things (Hardcover)

Customer Review

First of all:
1. This review is subjective through and through. She's put it bluntly, is coming out of the stomach and makes not even attempt vorzuheucheln you some form of objectivity. If that displeases, which should make his mind elsewhere. The internet is large and full of well-intentioned advice.
2. To all those who have decided to continue reading: I am writing this review as a longtime fan of the King Killer Chronicles, who had regularly monitored the blog of the author, and therefore expects the amendment around Auri in advance with great joy. But should one after the fantastic short story about Bast ("The Lightning Tree", this year appeared in the "Rogues Anthology") and not be too difficult. In addition, Auri is for me next Elodin and Bast on the most interesting characters of the series. Well, at least before I had read "The Slow Regard Of Silent Things". But more on that later.
__________

What can now be said about this little book? The way in which the prose was written, is exactly the way we are used to from Patrick Rothfuss: Beautifully, very intelligent, full of poetry and imagination and with the unmistakable flair of a skillful writer for the power of his words. The narrative tone is similar to that of a predominantly ornate children fairy tale. It would be all too easy to imagine that Rothfuss his little son can now and then a bedtime story from the book reads, if the story would sometimes not interrupted even with more mature themes (eg sexual innuendo) what me, admittedly, in the midst of sweetly-innocent narrative first had caught on the wrong foot. And yes, some passages are really presented heartbreaking and always matching illustrations by Nate Taylor put the whole thing on the icing. In short: It's a little piece of art.

And a hair, I would have been so far, to put the book halfway frustrated out of my hand.

I know I know. It is only a very brief amendment, not "War and Peace" by Tolstoy. But it is sometimes as inaccessible and entertaining as a phone book. Who expects a captivating reading pleasure here will probably be sorely disappointed. For my part I found myself increasingly in a "Bring-we-there-finally-behind-us" attitude. To be quite honest, it has at times been bored to death. It has lulled me two nights in a row after a few pages ahead to sleep. The only thing that has kept me going was the foolish assumption to be still rewarded in the end.

Rothfuss seems to have something already suspected. Not for nothing he described in his blog as well as the advantages and even the epilogue of the book the story as "unusual". So "unusual" so that the author saw itself compelled at the time of the release, put forward excuses for the publication of the work in relation to its readership. So "unusual" that told him his gut feeling that history is a single fiasco. (Quote from the epilogue: ".. I knew, deep in my heart of hearts, did my new-wrought story was a train wreck A colossal, smoldering mess of a train wreck") It's always a good sign when an author so much confidence in his work lies ... Here's another quote for you from the epilogue: ". People are going to read this and be pissed" He should keep to my chagrin, also legally.

In his words, the story do after all not what make classic tales usually halt so. Therefore the amendment is not suitable for everyone. What ever so everything is in his epilogue, I would like to be reluctant to repeat. Suffice it to say that (his acquaintances Vi Hart According to) people like me who are expecting an exciting history, but simply from the field to make. So polite, however it has not expressed. Apparently it means that I not the "Patrick Rothfuss and Vi Hart-extra-special Special Snowflake" -Leserclub belong and the author and Auri and this aimlessly to himself rippling history could not understand. I was probably just not broken enough for a broken story about a broken girl.

Sorry, Patrick, but this hipster view I can not you let it pass completely unpunished. If that makes me in your eyes to a cold-hearted, too rational person with no sense of the fine arts, then I have to accept the well.

I quote from the preface:
"On the other hand, if you'd like to learn more about Auri [Yes, I would like.], This story has a lot to offer. If you love words and mysteries and secrets. [Yes, I do.] If You're curious about the Under Thing and alchemy. [Yes, I am.] If you want to know more about the hidden turnings of my world ... [Yes, I will. Absolutely.] Well, then this book might be for you. " The emphasis here is probably on "MIGHT". For me, it was definitely not suitable.

So, what is at stake in the story? To Auri course. And as she tries to prepare for a visit from Kvothe in 7 days, for 5 days, however this makes everything else than this. And what we learn anything from this? Well, Auri's just weird, bizarre, mysterious. And inwardly broken. As far as I have after reading of "The Slow Regard Of Silent Things" really get it. Beautifully. But we knew that it all somehow already, is not it? So Auri's just. In addition, the author confirmed in a few marginal notes two facts about Auri, the attentive readers were already clear anyway. SPOILER in the next sentence: [[[3, 2, 1. Auri has studied at the university and is a name Aware. 1, 2, 3]]] What so great a mystery is something like "R + L = J" ... And what else is still so? Well, mmh, so ...

The truth is, it happens * * just nothing. The story revolves around Auri, a posh girl with obsessive-compulsive disorder, who lives alone in the secret underground of the University, there slyly from one place touches to the next, while things are names, all kinds of scrap and trash collecting, so Feng Shui operates and all the clutter and of the institution's premises and their own actions far more importance attaches as if they had actually earned it. So an old gear full of love, a wall is condescending or stairs to cunning, to be known as "tipping" (Tipple). Meanwhile grins and smiles our protagonist constantly for the smallest, yet so insignificant occasion to himself, with Rothfuss is not too bad, all of us 20 sentences to remember that Auri now smiles just grins or. Or it breaks out in desperation and the world goes down, if for example, a corner of your duvet has touched the floor or if there is something in its "rightful place" (proper place) is.

Every now and then she pulls her dearest dress, pulling it out again, and then put it on again. Then she pulls it off again, does anything while she is naked, and put it back in again. Then she pulls it off again and puts on her second favorite dress. And then she pulls it out again. All 3 paragraphs goes up compulsively wash your face and hands and feet and are traveling a previously found object its appropriate place in the sub-thing, being the place seemingly completely dependent on their current mood. Thus none of their lost property feels offended when you move or Left alone, they will kiss every few pages of the inanimate objects as restitution and sign their impeccable manners. Then we can started about 10 pages long part of it, as Auri produces soap. She washes her face again, her hands and feet. Then she puts on her dress. Then she goes somewhere to get back to arrange any waste properly. But - alas - it does not want to really succeed today. You must have yet to thoroughly think about where they should place because now the rusty buckle as possible. But that was not so bad, because so happens to be the way things go. Then Auri pulls her dress out again and attracts another. She washes her face again, her hands and feet. Did I mention that they, while they examined a glass of lavender, mischievously grinned to himself? Did not I? Oh. She grinned mischievously namely meanwhile to himself. This seems very important for the progress of the story - if we may call for such a thing as a "story". Finally go to sleep Auri, with a smile on his face. In the next chapter she wakes up again, grins (what else?), Decides what day it is and all the fun starts again from the beginning. The End.

No, seriously. That's it. I had the last two paragraphs had better get a "spoiler alert" should be preceded by, because that's pretty much everything that happens in this novel. 150 pages without significant action. Without backstory without significant character development, without resolution. There are no dialogues, no other interactions with other characters, not me visible form of voltage or external conflict. And after all that, we still have no idea who is Auri really where it comes from, how it was to what it is now, or why that should take care of everything even begin. Or, to put it with the nebulous words of the author: The story is "unusual". Gah. This is in itself not so tragic, Patrick. A story from the perspective of Auri should finally be different. But where is the action, please? If a story does not have a plot? Should not happen something meaningful, something surprising, something Aufschlussreiches anything away Exciting? Something?

The epilogue / blog can be seen also that Rothfuss had the story first written for "Rogues Anthology", but this is frittered away and - after he was unable to comply with the deadline - ultimately for another story ("The Lightning Tree" ) for the Anthology decided. What we have before us here therefore is essentially a revised version of a failed project of the author, which is not finished in time. Here's how it reads to me also. In addition, it is clear that Rothfuss did not want to publish the story, but his publisher saw the matter quite differently. Why? Well ... I guess now times completely wild out of the blue: Because money. Dollars, dollars, dollars. The fact is, such an amendment would have never made it to stores, if not the name of an immensely successful and famous author would have stood behind it with a large, buy ready fanbase. And rightly so.

In fact, I held Auri for fascinating before I got this cut out of her life to face. The encounters of Kvothe and Auri were for me always one of the highlights of the series. But now the figure was more than just disenchanted for me. What in the novels during their brief meeting still amusing, playful and at most mildly absurd appeared, one can here on page 50 or 60 by constant repetition gradually go properly on my nerves. The author's intention was probably to bring out a detailed character study Auri readers closer, to fill us with a deep affection for this girl shattered. As the story but did not want to work so well, Rothfuss has it - transported in one of his drawers - not without reason. And since they would have to stay that way. For me, unfortunately, the amendment resulted in the end the exact opposite of the original purpose. I was ultimately so unnerved, bored and sore in the brains of all the nonsense that Auri me is now much less loving than before. Too bad. Granted, I feel now greater compassion for Auri. Pity that one of the so far most interesting characters of Temerant must eke out an existence so boring fictitious.

I really wanted to like this book. Really. I wanted to know more from the universe of the Four Corners. Investigate the origin on Auris aware of the Amyr / Ciridae. To learn about Auris past and origin. An indication of a possible link to Princess Ariel catch. All this and twenty other things I wanted. Above all, I have (according to Vi Hart) but actually had the audacity to want to read an exciting story. You know - with a beginning, a middle and an end. How impudent of me. In my questions I have in any case get in this work, but a handful of vague allusions not only satisfactory answer. Of course, this in itself is still quite forgivable. If not for the matter of the non-existent act would ... But we have hopefully already clarified above.

Conclusion: The story stands or falls on the willingness of the reader, to show tolerance for literary experiments and to endure the overflowing revelries of the author for Auris oddities and predicament. So if you count yourselves to people who would like to meditate on the importance of each glittering knob, discovered the Auri on their excursions, and where it matters nothing that 90% of the book a single, long-winded description of this clutter and Auris cranky obsessive-compulsive disorder, or if you do just want to graze only one goal and directionless meandering, sometimes sweet-sweet, some mild disturbing slice-of-life story, then great. Congratulations, this book is designed exactly for you. I am glad for you. Honest. All others who expect a little more history, something that resembles an act, a voltage arc or character development, I advise against a purchase. The little information that may be considered as possibly Foreshadowing later, can be read in a short time in various wikis and forums, and at the same time avoid a boring, at best, at worst reading enervating. If you, like me, is the kind of person who feel a beautiful prose was just only worth as much as the story she tells, then listen to my advice and let the fingers of the book.

I'm sorry if this review sounds too negative for some of you. I am expecting the third part of the series in spite of everything with the same anticipation as most of you. And I think Patrick Rothfuss still for a brilliant storyteller. All is well. The world will continue to turn.

Remarks ((By the way: considered fasting course I do not think that this really deserves only 1 star For the literary artistry of the author is qualitatively easy to quality and towards the end the narrative also draws again a little and yes,... it is actually a work of art. That's undeniable. And yes, between all the Spannungsödnis and Hirnrissigkeit also the one or other potential clue is hidden, even to future events in the third book. But this is here certainly not the place to fabulieren theories . Realistically should go in my opinion, the Average probably towards 3 to a maximum of 4 stars. Amazon.com is a total of 435 reviews currently at an average of 3.8. I set my own rating lower to the current average of 4 1/2 stars in this country a little more clearly to press. On the one hand, because I consider it to be appropriate. On the other hand, because I had to break down my frustration and Amazon says I can. : P Ultimately, it is the review text, which is crucial, not the supposedly objective award any asterisks. And do not pretend you would not Rothfuss also like to want to give 1 to 2 bonus points just because his name stands on a cover. I'm doing all basically similar. But it's not nearly as that of the author and his publisher would have to fear, is not enough to find with a single insignificant vote like this paragraph. And how do I evaluate something, fortunately is still my own business - thank you very much. Hopefully learns at least one or two of you out of my endless review, with what expectations or mental attitude, he should consume the story * not *. If you still want to dare to try a reading, then you let me conclude with the following with be on the way: This book approaches myself as one would approach Auri itself. With patience. Caution. And tact.))

Edit: Upon request, an avid user I added my original review some comments at the beginning and end. I would not, that he thinks of me too bad and thinks I can not be ready to make compromises.
