Sony SLT-A99V Digital SLR Camera (24.3 megapixels, 7.6 cm (3 inch) display, Full HD video function, Live View) (Electronics)

Customer Review

The title promises a lot, but that is also held.

SLT Sony calls the "evolution of the SLR" deal. So one imagines evolution.

After I was able to thoroughly test the D800 and the 5D Mark III had for over 6 months, I traded the latter against the Sony SLT-A99V and regret it for a second.

I use the A99 mainly with a Sigma EX DG HSM 24-70 f / 2.8 lens which I can only recommend in this exact combination.

I shoot in RAW as often as in JPEG as I do not automatically at each photo site to the highest professional standards thus I expect from a camera also excellent JPEG results. Cheap excuses like "professionals shooting in RAW" to actually to say "We are too stupid a proper JPEG Converter incorporate" I find lax. If I make in 4 weeks holiday over 1600 photos I do not sit after two weeks on the computer by editing the after.

Who really does, I'm sorry. I take pictures, etc. on major appointments in RAW or photos where I want to get with post still some out but not every photo. Including.

Thanks to the excellent JPEG engine with excellent HDR function and as good a dynamic optimization (DRO +) one is only in the rarest of cases ever forced the photos again to grasp.

For me, coming to more than 97% perfect photos from the camera and only the remaining 3%, I use RAW.

Exposure, white balance, DRO +, HDR, everything works as it should and provides fantastic photos.

The camera has, unfortunately, the same AF module as the A77 which in full-frame bit too small and middle acts, through the excellent Subject Tracking however is more than made up.

Similarly, the OLED viewfinder is just divine, not least this I owe to the coming about 97% of the photos already finished from the camera. We can already see in advance whether white balance, exposure & Co. fit perfectly and adjusts before the shoot.

This makes post-processing unnecessary in most cases.

MFNR (Multi Frame Noise Reduction) is a feature which is shunned by some photographers. It makes succession 6 Photos and expects this to reduce together to the noise.

The "" disadvantage "" is that it only works with JPEG and some photographers get so pimples on the eyes when they hear only JPEG and pictures in RAW rather at ISO 25,600 and make the noise reduction retrospectively.

Everyone thinks so, missed something. By MFNR the noise reduced by up to 2 ISO levels. No NR algorithm even of the Adobe 234090324, does not come close to matching this result. At ISO 25,600 with MFNR JPEG worlds looks better than the RAW could ever look.

Stupid so who hangs them what "Professional" is because other producers (large by example Canon) away clearly prescribe what is professional and everything else out of the camera. Too bad.

Image stabilization in the body is at Sony of course mandatory and works perfectly. In addition to the unused gecropped sensor area to use also for image stabilization in video.

A 60p FullHD video, hand held at 300mm, no problem at all. Fully shock / wobble-free. So be it, thanks Sony =)

Two SD card slots, very chic, use 2x64GB SDHC Class 10 Memory Card / 45 the piece), work without problems, the camera coped but noticeably faster memory cards.

The buttons are mostly completely freely configurable and you do not have a limited choice of options to make like the 5D Mark III which, according to Canon for this key sense. So I have with me is a quick-change button for RAW / JPEG and several buttons with JPEG functions (DRO / HDR).

Where in the A77 is a Flash button, is here at the A99 an assignable.

Who uses manual lenses can enjoy Peeking at the focus, and of course also to the image stabilization =)

I use for post digiKam and there the JPEG preview is for the overview / preview then used from the camera to the JPEG settings.

When you press "Edit" then you get the original RAW to face. This is added only a bit dull (especially if you foresaw the JPEG), but perfect for rework, and there is a lot in the A99.

In contrast to the 5D Mark III has the A99 a much higher dynamics + no annoying noise at ISO 100 what the existing dynamics in addition usable makes (jump in the 5D Mark III Around 7 Aperture Noise-free dynamics out, at the A99 on the other hand through 9).

The 5D Mark III has the better AF module, however, no subject tracking. In practice, it has in my Subject Tracking as effectively proved the 61 AF points of the 5D3. May be different from other however.

Now what else can you say to the camera, I could rave for days of her. I got me even then, when I had the A77, wished "If only there were the A77 with full frame sensor". Well, here it is, A77 with full-frame sensor + countless other improvements.

I would like to point out the folding screen. This is by 3 axes extremely mobile and extremely stable. Not without reason I have the feeling that the folding screen will outlive me, just as the whole camera.

Have you used even at conditions below -15 °, could not find fault electronics or similar. The firmware has here and there tiny bugs which were however already confirmed by Sony as fixed and the firmware update is in the starting blocks.

However, there are no serious bugs in the loss of images result or the like, but annoying if the camera does not respond for 10 sec (but this occurs relatively infrequently).
The coating of the mirror SLT also does a great job, never ever anywhere may discover "Ghost" or similar effects (even with the A77 not) and changes in temperature steam up the mirror and not (in contrast to the front lens: P).

Video function is great, you can not tell. 60p makes perfect (in NTSC, PAL 50p) namely in FullHD, image stabilization, as already mentioned.

The camera has a telephoto zoom mode can be in the increases on 8b / 10b or s / s. Positive here is the optimized AF measurement and exposure setting, the negative / s is rotated to 4.6 megapixels down at 10b and 8b / s on 10. In the end, one assumes the function from the subsequent back on PC and provides for optimized settings for telephoto. Personally, I like the function is not so, but the presence is definitely not a negative point.

By SLT design also does away with the depth of field preview button meaning. When 16 Represents and the depth of field preview button used on aperture, the viewfinder image is still equally bright In my 5D Mark III I partly because as seen in dense fog at night:. /

Everything is simply excellent on this camera; here are the Quick Reference (features which are not available from other producers in the price range with a "!" highlighted)

+ Big Bright OLED viewfinder with 100% level, histogram, image preview & Co.!
+ Image stabilization in photos with any lens!
+ Image stabilization in video with any lens!
+ Image stabilization in video is completely silent!
+ Multi Frame Noise Reduction to ISO 51k (there is also the EOS 6D, but does this weaker there)
+ RAW quality
+ JPEG quality
+ Buttons very freely configurable!
+ Subject Tracking!
+ 3-axis folding screen!
+ HDR mode
+ DRO mode
+ Exposure
+ Phases autofocus in video!
+ 60p for video
+ 60p at Full HD!

Strong buy recommendation, but looks rather earlier times at your local photo dealer over the price at Amazon is still relatively high because Amazon somehow extremely late has the A99 in the program.

This camera was indeed deserves from dpreview and imaging resource (who made an extra design websites since the normal websites Design of the camera would not do justice) awarded as best in class.
