If someone is unsure which is the correct version of Win7 for him, here is an overview of the available variants:
Windows 7 Starter
This edition is designed for basic tasks such as connecting to the Internet, sending e-mails and creating documents. It is the only version that is available only as a 32-bit version and in the memory is limited to a maximum of 2 GB. There is no Aero-surfaces, no multi-touch and the pre-installed Windows Media Player is limited in its function. So no DVDs, for example, be played in Windows Media Player. In addition, the desktop background does not change. This version is exclusively (usually pre-installed on netbooks) as an OEM license.
Windows 7 Home Basic
Home Basic is decreased in the equipment version of Home Premium. It includes, for example, no Windows Media Center. For the Windows Media Player is included. Home Basic and all later versions support multiple monitors and a fast user switching is possible, but this edition supports up to 4GB of memory in the 32-bit version. In the 64 bit version 8GB are supported.
Windows 7 Home Premium
This version is designed for the private market, the limitation of memory is 16 GB. Compared to Home Basic has some additional features such. B. supporting HDTV and playing and writing DVDs. The Windows Media Player and the Windows Media Center, and some games are also included.
Windows 7 Professional
This version is aimed primarily at the business sector. It includes all the features of Home Premium Edition, and has, like the other editions Ultimate and Enterprise, a limitation of the working memory of 192 GB (!). It supports Windows Server domains. The XP Mode lets you run programs that would otherwise not work in Windows 7.
Windows 7 Ultimate
Windows 7 Ultimate contains the functions of all the other versions and is aimed at small business owners who operate their PC and personal and business both at home and in the enterprise network. Ultimate also provides, among other things, the BitLocker disk encryption and boot from virtual disks in the VHD format.
Windows 7 Enterprise
This version is basically a Windows 7 Ultimate, which is sold under volume licensing for businesses.
In my opinion, Home Premium for normal home users is absolutely sufficient. I have certainly not regretted the move.
