I had bought this lens as a kit lens with my D5100. It made good pictures, but I have found that the images that I made with my fixed focal lengths (35mm and 50mm) are significantly better. As one hears again and again that the kit lenses are so bad, I have the 18-105 exchanged for the 16-85, which enjoys a much better reputation (and twice as expensive). Judging by the images of the transition has not paid off because I can not detect any significant differences. On the contrary, I now have less focal length at the telephoto end and the newly acquired 2mm wide angle not suitable for architectural photography, as you very perceives major distortions here. The distance to the fixed focal length is so large that the lens felt at the same level as the 18-105 moves.
Only the build quality of the 16-85 is slightly higher estimate because the 18-105 has only a plastic bayonet fitting, what with frequent changes perhaps can lead to problems has (but not shown me the least wear, and I also do not frequently changer am).
