As a longtime Canon DSLR user I'm spoiled I though, but - unlike many a "Photographer" - I know the limits of compact cameras. So I was prepared for noise beyond certain ISO values, and so it happened. From ISO 400 this unsightly effect associated with each image and at ISO 1600, the images are unwatchable because all the details get lost in the noise.
Up to ISO 200, however, the G10 produced unexpectedly good pictures with natural colors and sharpness right into the corners. With a steady hand and the well-functioning image stabilizer, the loss of the high ISO values, however, is to get over very well. As I have clearly seen worse in a number of predecessors such as the Canon A640 and expected here as well. Boost can be the already good quality through the Raw mode, where one has to rely on the post-processing by the format change to Canon tools.
The camera equipment is excellent. Nearly every feature that is known of SLR cameras, finds himself here. In addition, the camera has many more helpers and several color gimmicks, which can be used or not.
The focal length range is very well chosen with 28-140mm. Both a real wide-angle as well as a moderate zoom are possible, with no continuous zoom is possible. Who needs more focal length, which is usually bought at competitors with considerably poorer optical quality. So ran to the subject, namely on foot.
The build quality is great: mostly encased in a metal housing, the camera gives a good-quality feel; the really first-class, fine-resolution display is easy to read under all Bedingungenen; the separate dials for ISO and aperture correction are operating technically a leap forward and even the camera can be very pleasant to use, though the compact housing leads to quite a crowd at the controls. But that happens to be the price of the wealth of functions and after a short one finds each key and each wheel.
The size of the camera is perfect: right in order to put a pinch, even in a jacket pocket. Who will manage the already with a Nikon D40?
Who wants or needs more power, can not avoid an SLR - with all the disadvantages, such as size, lens purchase, handling. For all other the G10 is likely to be the benchmark in the compact at the time.
Really annoying is the absence of a printed manual. Has this always been popeliger with previous Canon cameras, it is now completely gone. And that's such a camera is not appropriate, Canon !!
