One year after the shock caused by their first album, Led Zeppelin confirms all the good we thought of them taking out a second album as demonic as the last. This second installment of Airship explores new areas already outlined in the first but in a different way like blues that becomes more progressive, psychedelic side and even the absent first ballad album. The disc is ranked No. 1 of the 2 sides of the Atlantic. The blues inspiration (credited or not) is more relevant than ever: "Whole Lotta Love" (You need Love Willy Dixon), "The Lemon Song" (Killing floor Howlin 'Wolf), "Bringing it on home "(Sony Boy Williamson via Willy Dixon). The album starts on "Whole Lotta Love", a song whose devastating riff guitar intro will seal forever the reputation of the group. The central passage very psyche is completely delirious with various effects on the bottom cymbal to keep the tempo! It's like taking the heart of a horror film. This title happens to climb to 4th place the American charts. CCS English instrumental group founded by Alexis Korner in 1970, made a version that was used generically to the famous "Top Of The Pops" for several years. "Thank you" is a beautiful ballad where Plant alternates singing with sweet voices and much more incisive in the chorus of an organ background held notes that plunges us into a mystical and magical atmosphere. "Heartbreaker" is still a bravura blues inspiration which begins with the bass guitar on a repeating pattern. Plant as usual sings in a loud voice; then suddenly everything stops to let alone play guitar solo to big reinforcements improvised rhythmic effects and a huge sound! Astonishing! Following a second solo accompanied breakneck tempo, Genuine treat! Many other nuggets are planned for this wonderful second album where we find a jumble of blues inspirations, psychedelic, hard and even folk; all mixed with changes of rhythms and tempos, bass and drum solos, different atmospheres, surprising sequences of between 2 pieces without pause etc. Hence the eclecticism which demonstrated the airship. Led Zeppelin is not a group that is repeated from one album to the next, it would be risky to venture to say if it is better than the 1st or 3rd (that will still show us another aspect of talent of the group).
