Canon EF 24-105mm 4 L IS USM Canon EF 24-70mm ObjektivDas 4.0 L IS USM zoom lens is one of the younger lenses from Canon's L range. It has been available since the end of 2012 in the trade. About 7 years older, however, are the very famous and popular Canon EF 17-40mm 4.0 L USM Canon EF 24-105mm and 4.0 L IS USM lenses. All three lenses are in front of me. Sure, there are still the Canon Canon EF 24-70mm 2.8 L USM and the Mk II, with the elderly is no longer produced and the younger is much more expensive. Both are excellent lenses which I unfortunately do not have here and they can not actually compare therefore.

24-105mm vs. 24-70mm

Compare Canon EF 24-105mm 4 L IS USM Lens Canon EF 24-205mm 17-40mmDas 17-40mm 1: 4.0 L is not in a specific competition to test candidates due to the focal length and the lack of image stabilizers. The Canon EF 24-105mm 1: 4.0 L IS, however, already - you could at least think. 24-105mm on full-frame are great and practically, that is the biggest drawback of 24-70mm. But for the 24-105mm also has some disadvantages. The image stabilization is a bit older and probably only creates up to 3 shutter speeds and you can forget as a result of macro zoom Closest focusing distance of 45cm. The 24-70 stabilized up to 4 exposure steps and has a hybrid IS, which is incredibly intelligent. The image stabilizer detects camera movement when shooting or Mitziehern automatically and turns the stabilization in this direction. The better stabilizer detects camera shake in macro mode by tilting and displacements. From 38cm macro mode captures at all at first. To take full advantage of the close focus distance is necessary to remove the lens hood and you can borrow up to a few centimeters closer to the motif - but this is not always possible.

If you are traveling in nature and will cover everything from landscapes to macro somewhat willing to compromise with just one lens, the Canon EF 24-70mm 4.0 L IS USM is with me the very top. It can provide a lot of things that all the other Canon L zoom can not so.

Sample Images

But before I write more about the 24-70mm, initially some sample images in the form of landscapes, which have fallen so without edits from Lightroom. All recordings were made with the way the Canon EOS 6D.

Haptics

Canon EF 24-105mm 4 L IS USM ObjektivDie Reminiscent to the 24-105mm, 24-70mm zoom of being but is smaller. It is even smaller than the 17-40mm, but also a bit heavier. In numbers: 83,4mm x 93mm at 600 grams. Thus, it has almost a square shape. Due to the small size of the 24-70mm feels very robust and compact. Of course, the L lens has a rubber lip on the bayonet again and is dust and splash-protected. The zoom ring runs smoothly smoothly and easily. The tube extends even on its own how to possibly know it from the EF-S 15-85mm. In addition, the lens can be locked by a lock switch on the right side. This also serves to activate the macro mode. On the left side there are two switches for the AF / MF and the image stabilizer.

After that, the focus ring of the true is smooth, but not too easily follows. A third rotation brings the focus from infinity to the minimum focus distance. The ring is to include wide enough and well. This is followed by the red L-ring that one can sometimes mask off at the Spanish city breaks;) The front cover has a comfortable interior handle and the sun visor is rather small, but has a small feature. Has to solve the visor you have a small pin impressions. This assurance is not quite useless. It would not be the first time that an unsecured sun visor is lost.

Neither fish nor meat

The major disadvantage of an all-zoom is that it may be many disciplines, but not really well. So it looks also at the 24-70mm IS L. It has a wide, but not extreme. It scratches with 70mm at the lower limit telephoto. Image quality - to which I'll be right there - is fine, but not breathtaking. It has a macro mode, but not really good. Also 70mm are on full frame this often enough. Diaphragm 4 is okay, but does not allow extreme Bokehs, except of course in macro mode. The 24-70 may just too much, so almost all areas are covered, but not really good.

Most but you have no Canon EF 100mm 2.8 L have this to between shooting a macro. A 16-35mm L is good at wide angle, but often rich and 24mm. 105mm or more are not uncommon in landscapes or animals very useful, but 70mm and a later crop are also possible. Only if you want strong offenblendig work, the 24-70mm this light intensity can not be replaced easily. But so often does that with me not before, that I need a f 2.8 instead of 4.0. If you do, I always have a 50mm 2.5 or 40mm 2.8 Pancake doing that are light as a feather.

To shut it clear who are not too keen rumschleppen a huge equipment with itself and wants to spare the lens changes, gets a very good all-rounder with the 24-70mm. In most cases, compromising on image quality and features are unacceptable and difficult to spot. A picture does not have to be perfectly sharp in the 100% view.

The 24-70mm It is very important that you can classify it beforehand, otherwise you will be disappointed. If you know the test lens a little better, you will appreciate its advantages and all-round ability very.

Image Quality

After the EF 24-70mm f / 1: 4 have tried to classify, it should be clear that one can not expect the imaging performance of a 100mm 2.8. I would like to not conceal the core issues of the universal 24-70mm IS also. That would be only medium resolution, especially at the edges and a fairly strong vignetting. However, while the Vignette next is not bad, at least for me, I want to show you below. The are still the two words "Lightroom" and add "Lens Correction".

The first series consists of the original image and the subsequent crop at different apertures. Here I selected the top left corner as Crop. It is clearly evident that a much darker area is still present at aperture 22, which is barely visible on the right side. Whether this is just in my copy so I can not say exactly.

Furthermore, the picture quality is an important quality factor with their details. I have no visible lines resolution or measured but created image sections from the corresponding photos. My opinion of this comparative practice is closer than some meaningless test laboratory.

The first two image sections are respectively from near the center and the last two from the bottom right and the top center.

Macro Mode

Canon EF 24-105mm 4 L IS USM Lens Review - macro MacroIch holding the macro mode of the 24-70mm IS very important. In particular, by the integrated image stabilizer so you can scan one or another "Amateur macro" from the hand, without having to use a tripod. I am fully aware that all macro photographers will laugh at this statement, but still can fall out one way or another mediocre picture here. It being understood that we are not from here 1: 1 magnification talk + Crop.

The last three images are composed of macro Crops under studio conditions at f 4, 8 and 14 and very slight editing.

Action Images and Image Stabilizer

That should be good, the image stabilizer, I have already mentioned above. How good he is but, the following pictures show. To make two images with and without IS out of my hand is of course incredibly subjective and prone to error. Nevertheless, one can on the basis of two images and their crops - which have been made at 1/15 second - recognize what the image stabilizer in my hand so can afford anything;)

When I was on a photo tour of this blog article, get me the following exceptions. Random strutted 3 large deer about 10 feet in front of me in the woods around where we all 4 very frightened when we saw us. 2 of the animals fled back into the forest, but one seemed to have eaten the wrong mushrooms;) It was a wonderful big bow around me, so I could make the images to an open area.

I held the camera in hand and was able to respond immediately. Since I was rather on the hunt for landscapes I had set an aperture of 13 in Av mode with 1/60 second came out. Nevertheless, I managed, probably not least because of the good and intelligent image stabilizer, a good Mitzieher. After that I used the same in Tv mode 1/2500 seconds. Although the Canon 6D is not predestined for such recordings, I find the images at 70mm okay. It is the sharp, what should be sharp.

Bokeh

Anyone who spends a lot of money for a lens, will also have a decent bokeh. The 24-70mm L has 9 diaphragm blades. But this alone does not say much about the quality of bokehs. I find this Bokeh okay, but sometimes a bit restless. This is very dependent on the background and the distance.

In order to get a picture of yourself, I have created a small freehand series of tests at different apertures. The following F-numbers I've used:

Other

Although I have done some backlit subjects, I could also in oblique incidence sun not see any lens flare, very good!

The focus is fast, quiet and accurate, USM halt. But what makes the usual noise, is the crunching start of IS, but that should already be known.

I would have done a switch from normal and macro mode. A Lock switch I do not need actually and operation by simultaneously pushing on the switch and turn the lens is not always practical.

So you may look at some pictures more accurately, I have you tied up a package of 17 RAW files. You can watch free invite here to download the RAW images of the Canon 6D.

Conclusion

Although I 100% from the Canon EF 24-70mm 4.0 L IS USM am convinced in any discipline, yet I am convinced of the concept. I like the lenses all want and also much, as long as the image results are useful. And this is where the 24-70mm. Will I have a large range of designs and scenarios to cover and not constantly reach into the packed backpack, the macro-IS-L wide-angle zoom is very good!

Even on a Canon EOS 6D makes the lens a very good figure. At the 5D Mark III and other full-frame DSLR's that will be very similar. In Cropkameras, such as a Canon EOS 70D or 700D I would rather cautious. I am traveling in nature, I will always have a nice wide angle. 24mm on Crop me there are not enough. On the other hand, the macros of 24-70mm on crop sensor are of course even more exciting.
