In a medieval world with humans, elves, goblins, dwarves (the usual, with qualities and defects, big beautiful, little nasty, wicked beasts, kind, mines of Moria (ah, no I confuse) in the disorder) originality, the assailant of history will be a people of a parallel world, from a dimensional rift (hence the subtitle of the War of the fault), the Tsuranis.
Pug, 13 years old, orphaned and with all the quality of the classic hero is chosen as apprentice Kulgan, master magician at the service of the Duke of Crydee. With his friend Tomas, destined to become a soldier, it is they who discovered the threat and therefore accompany their masters across the country to inform the king and raise troops for a war that seems (and is) inevitable.
It is certainly far from fantasy in vogue today, hyper realistic, Black Jack or the GoT. This is the fantasy of old, tolkienne, without sex, good-where, even when fighting raged and blood flows freely, it is the sense of honor and bravery in combat, not that emerge disemboweled intestines and feces odors dying.
That said, this was written in 1982 and Feist was able to embark in its history and original world. The characters are somewhat flown, but history stands and is well balanced between a first part on learning Pug, a second dangerous and eventful journey and a final epic war.
A first game taking so which reads very easily (to the point that I thought at first to have to do a children's literature, before the story becomes denser, more complex and politicized some), which takes us and keeps us in suspense until the end. A good time Heroic Fantasy.
