To close the bag magnets are used that look like snaps, but not have to be pressed together. When you receive your bag, you should check first thing precaution if they close properly, even with the camera in your pocket. I had at first (in December 2014 and not on Amazon) never received a copy in which, although close both knobs separately, but both at the same time - the position was not 100% accurate. I was then exchanged the bag directly from Canon by an error-free.
Visually I like the bag in black / red well, I suppose the material is synthetic leather. Inside it is padded on the side with the display slightly, otherwise easily coated thinly with a velvety soft fabric. Outside at the back there is a flap through which you can pull a belt (max. 4 cm width).
The case provides a good protection against shocks - far more than simple fabric or neoprene bags. Compared to a proper hard case made of plastic or aluminum it has the advantage that it is adapted exactly to the dimensions of the camera, not on the entire surface, the height of the lens and thus perhaps a little better fits into a jacket pocket. The area around the lens feels relatively solid, but can be up in the middle still pushing something. A metal plate is therefore not incorporated, but as long as the bag is not exactly coincident with the center of the lens cap on a sharp stone, the protection should be sufficient.
Against dust, sand or even water, however, the bag offers no protection. Above and on the lid are still relatively large gaps that could be significantly less for my taste. Therefore 1 point deduction in the assessment.
For those that do not require dust or waterproof bag the Canon DCC-1870 is recommended. The price is not cheap, but in order and at least cheaper than the equivalent of Sony for the RX100 cameras that beats with over 60 to book.
