Update August 2010:
There is the WD TV HD first and second version.
I've added.
WD TV Mini:
+ Component output for older plasma / LCD
+ Good image quality via component output
- Does not HD videos from (only SDTV MPG and AVI)
- Firmware can not be updated
- No file functions (copy, delete, move)
- No network connection
WD TV HD (1st Gen):
+ Plays all formats (MKV, AVI, MPG, ISO)
+ Very good image quality over HDMI
+ Firmware can be updated via file
- No file functions (copy, delete, move)
- With Videos with DTS stereo downmix not possible (no sound with HDMI TV or older receiver without DTS!)
- When videos with AC3, DTS or DD5.1 Stereo only at the analog output is output
- No component output therefore on TV without HDMI only moderate image quality
- No network connection
WD TV HD (2nd Gen):
+ Plays all formats (MKV, AVI, MPG, ISO)
+ Very good image quality over HDMI
+ Firmware can be updated via file
+ File operations (copy, delete, move)
+ For videos with DTS stereo downmix is possible (for HDMI TV or older receiver without DTS)
- When videos with AC3, DTS or DD5.1 Stereo only at the analog output is output
- No component output therefore on TV without HDMI only moderate image quality
- No network connection
WD TV Live:
+ Plays all formats (MKV, AVI, MPG, ISO)
+ Component output and therefore very good image quality on TV without HDMI
+ File operations (copy, delete, move)
+ Network connection with access to file servers and Internet, with optional WLAN stick
+ Firmware can be updated via the network and file
+ For videos with DTS stereo downmix is possible (for HDMI TV or older receiver without DTS)
- When videos with AC3, DTS or DD5.1 Stereo only at the analog output is output
- Badly translated German menu
Postive I think that's held in Charcoal Mist housing.
The black glossy surface of the other players is extremely sensitive and looks quickly scratched and scruffy.
The criticized by many power consumption I find not so scandalous.
The player needs to me in standby 5 watts and 7 watts in operation (measured by Conrad EKM 265).
The only complaint is the poor German translation of the menu, which was also unfortunately with the latest firmware (v1.02.21 currently March 2010) does not improve and to appeal in WD forum a year ago.
Therefore only 4 stars.
All in all, only the live everything to need (component output and playback option for HD video files).
For the Live costs only about 20 euros more than the WD TV HD!
