For quick reader (tl; dr):
- Via VL812 chip; 30W external power supply
- 7 ports
- Traffic flawlessly (max approximately 380MB / s - like all of this series)
- Short-circuit protection: improvement
BENCHMARK
And again lands a USB 3 Hub on my table. A little bit bored, I play around. And again it came as it had to come: all hubs must again prove in a newly created "Torture Test" what they can. Surprises should not occur, as this stroke (according to manufacturer information) with the famous "Via VL812" block operates. I know the block from the dismantling of several other hubs:
The result is hardly surprising (again torment parallel two hard drives and an SSD the Hub in parallel operation under CrystalDiskMark). For safety, I switch the SSD drive from Port 1 to Port 7 of the stroke - the images are alike: Maximum throughput approximately 380 MB / s occupied with 3 ports. This corresponds to the performance of common hubs and other sensible moves to the saturation limit of USB. 3
None Test any dropouts has been found.
TEARDOWN - TOTAL FOR CUTTING
The construction corresponds to all current 7 Port Hub: Each chip has 4 USB ports. The chips were successively cascaded (this goes on top a port lost), which means "7 Ports' results in the sum. On the back of the wired components by hand were lawfully soldered (which, however, is likely to have no effect).
OVERLOAD / SHORT
Even when teardown I noticed the lack of individual protection of USB ports. The USB Hub from Allreli (link to previous test) behaved exemplary on the site and turned a congested port temporarily from (Polyfuse).
The Avantek (powered by an 30-watt power supply) are generously: loaded with 0.5 ohms it starts after a short time (on all outputs) with 8-9 amps to pulses on. In-short the unit held harmless by half an hour. However, the Elko of switching power supply disproportionately warm (> 80 °) was. The Hub protects consequently sufficiently self, but commands the standard maximum of 0.9A per port (and only after approval by the host).
Very bad! The unit's optics like. The housing acts processed pleasant. The ports have a good distance. The data shoveling the unit expected to be completely without problems from the ports to the controller.
The absence of the port shutdown I can pronounce only a limited recommendation. but I prefer devices that make as much "right" as is technically possible and affordable. At The End:
Product evaluation are not rewarding hobby (even blog posts to illustrate not).
The only motivation is, the positive reviews (or constructive reviews) at the end of the month.
