Asus Google Nexus 7 16GB Tablet (Personal Computers)

Customer Review

A note in advance: I currently own both devices lucky and they had the time to directly compare. The reference in the competitive Android-middle class, in the move both tablets, represents the image and sales here clearly the Asus Google Nexus 7, and therefore it is my reference in this test be. I own the tablet now almost a month and have to me in time gain an extensive overview of what it can and what it can not (but perhaps also not missing?). The Samsung just came "fresh pure" but has been brought up to date and also extensively tested by me. Said in advance: The panacea is neither. However, if you know exactly what you want and actually need, in the light of price-performance certainly a clear decision to buy one of the two products is possible!

.............................. Processing ................... .................................................. .............

Asus Google Nexus: For a device of the middle class is really nothing wrong with the quality of workmanship. The tablet works and is stable, nothing creaks or deforms, as long as one does not think of wanton destruction. On the positive side are the label-free compared to Samsung Front (Who wants to spend hours reading "Samsung"?) And also the very pleasant rubberized back that, contrary to my expectations, incidentally scratch resistant! With normal greasy fingers the rubber stays nice clean without constant care and used within one month not from, outstanding! The display also delighted with absolute Kratzunempfindlicheit and takes fingerprints on slow. The only thing not likely to be for everyone is the silver plastic strip. At first glance it looks a little cheap but by no means disturbing still high but at closer inspection compared to the rest of the tablets.

Samsung Tab2: Samsung is the build quality is not at the back. Haptic and visual contrast makes the light undurchdachteren impression. On a black frame, a bright silver Samsung logo emblazoned. Who wants to see that it always? So proud nobody will probably be on a unit of the middle class. It just bothers only because it has quickly seen it full, even though it certainly no longer catches the eye when concentrated Surfing the web, work or play, it is for me an unintelligible NoGo and if I had my way I'd like it more on any successor will find in this form. A compromise would be here perhaps a dull silver-gray lettering but omitting definitely the best solution! The back is in contrast to the Nexus smooth and thus not quite as rough and seemingly even more susceptible to scratches and fingerprints. Risk that a tablet from the hand slips I see not but it fässt not quite as pleasant like the Nexus. Optically not quite succeeded is also the dark gray frame. Here I mean not so much the color, but rather the asymmetrical course went round about the Tablet. It should look elegant, achieved in my eyes but rather the opposite.
Also not entirely successful, the display is as regards fingerprints. These make up much faster than Schlieren noticeable as the Nexus. In the scratch resistance, it lies on the same.

+++++ +++++ Conclusion
For mid-range tablets both devices give nothing and stand is good. Perfect is none but the Asus Google Nexus 7 thoughtful. Both tablets are easy to hold. The Nexus 7 grabs a little more comfortable with its rubberized back and is less sensitive to fingerprints.

..............................Display........................................................................................

When display the differences between the two devices at first glance are not large but then significantly. How does it work?
If you own only one of the two devices and the other does not know, or it is the first tablet, you would want to set you will probably be equally satisfied with both displays. In direct comparison the difference is partly enormously what has surprised myself. Here it is less about the sharpness of the display, as a lot more about the color representation.

The higher resolution of the Google Nexus always does not at first glance, but often at second glance a positive impact. Especially writing acts defined with clearer shape.
Noteworthy, however, is the difference in color representation. In direct comparison, I, a colorful picture and a video side by side looked here for a Facebook parallel, and tested a game. What I did not noticed without direct comparison: The display from Samsung has a clearly visible blue tinge on all comparators. Most clearly fell at Facebook on (a lot of white background, blue header). Here the white background looked bluish and unnatural. On the Asus Google Nexus 7 natural and comfortable. Even when a clear picture blue tint was visible. The same applies to the game and the video, although it stands out here at least. The Asus Google Nexus 7 shows tend rather to warm colors, if it does not meet the natural tone. Subjectively, this is me, however, significantly more pleasant and in direct comparison, the images appear on the Nexus realistic on the Samsung easily washed and mushy.
Even though I have no concrete data is to say in terms of the contrast of the display, but that there are both good no longer the measure of all things. It lived up to expectations and is sufficient but no more. Again, lagging behind the Samsung. It's still as good degree and non-irritating but far from an "AHA" experience.

+++++ +++++ Conclusion
For all those who place great emphasis on natural colors and especially those (like me) who see warm colors in doubt as to the display of the Cold Asus Nexus 7 is clearly a better choice. Anyone who buys a primary FR and has no comparison will be, however, very pleased with the display of the Samsung. The contrast is middle class in both devices. Chat on Facebook and want to view photos you prefer on the Nexus, as the blue tinge of the Samsung extends into the white area. Even games and videos are considerable in direct comparison to the Nexus.

..............................Ausstattung...................................................................................

Here it depends on pure facts and the facts come here:

Google Nexus 7:

positive: good, fast front camera
Micro USB allows to connect external storage media such as USB stick / SD card (requires add. App for 3)
fast for a mid Tablet CPU / GPU (Tegra 3)
Support for NFC
Bluetooth
GPS
good IPS display

Negative: No Micro HDMI to look at movies, pictures and videos on TV
No scan rear camera and thus no opportunities documents or to take snapshots
Micro USB cable for connecting external storage media is not in, app costs extra
16GB permanently installed memory without leave to amend could make a worry
the 32GB version will cost 50 more, at extra cost, estimated at 10
Docking connection for me for no apparent benefit
1GB of RAM is not enough for the future
Charging cable too short, plug something Globig

Samsung Tab2:

positive: internal memory of 8GB sparrt when buying a lot of money and is affordable and easily expandable with a MicroSD card
Rear camera available with 5MP
Bluetooth
GPS
IPS display (but can not keep up the with the Nexus)

negative: Both front and rear camera provides at least in the interior (only tested here), satisfactory images
Connecting a USB stick is not possible
No Micro HDMI
The paps Samsung charging cable interferes with the handling of the tablet when it operated unplugged
No docking in landscape mode, portrait mode Docking is my opinion only a useless compromise
1GB of RAM is not enough for the future
Charging cable too short

+++++ +++++ Conclusion
The advantages of the Nexus 7 and the from Samsung are obvious: The Nexus has the better (faster) Interiors supports NFC (which in this price range is amazing), has the better screen and a usable pleasant fleet front camera. The Samsung scores clearly with expandable memory and at least theoretically, with the rear camera. Practically, both cameras are useless for snapshots indoors. Experience has shown that both cameras for outdoor use but certainly able to deliver at least snapshot quality. The broad Standard charging cable from Samsung interfere. Can be verschmerzt join the impossibility a USB stick now because of free online storage space can replace it on much more convenient uncomplicated fashion / is.

..............................Performance...................................................................................

Again, I want both devices not categorically separate, as in the processing, since the similarities between the devices are simply too high.

Both devices are from today's perspective to almost any user yet fully everyday, working and suitable for gaming. While the former is not expected to change also great in the next 2 years I can see at all potential gamblers but very soon limits.
I'm nobody who has tested the graphically elaborate first-person shooter on the devices, however, a relatively recent graphically elaborate MOBA game. Since there is to my knowledge only an instant for Android is anyone who wants to use the device for playing, know what is meant, without me having to directly mention the name here.
The game is easily playable on both devices, but both devices are different here early to your limits. The game, the graphics settings automatically adjusted hardware. While the automatic settings are set to low to medium on the Samsung and additives such as shadows and Bloom have been disabled is enabled on the Nexus everything and all the other settings on high. If, on the Samsung all settings manually on high terrain disappears completely and there is therefore no longer playable. This is not a benchmark, but shows a tendency that the nexus with the built Tegra chip has the newer hardware spieletauglichere and the Samsung is already getting quite old but
one is only casual gamers or wants to use the device otherwise, except for emails, calendar, videos, Facebook and so both devices take virtually nothing. They respond promptly and provide a both not on the ordeal. Also several open applications provide parallel for both devices is not a problem. The change between the applications work smoothly.

+++++ +++++ Conclusion
If you want to use the tablet for leisure (watching movies, editing photos, surfing, ...) and (manage appointments, emails check etc.) to work is you still have in the future his joy on both devices. The reserves are larger at the Samsung Nexus but also sufficient. Here rather the question of the use of decisive give more Fator should be and possibly the display.
For all gamers who not only occasionally want to play a mini-game in the track, but also like to elaborate times current graphics and want to use more time-consuming Games caution. The Samsung is it even more suitable but you would now like to turn a blind eye and then the purchase decision is justified only to the favorable purchase price. Current titles bring the tablet to the limits, future certainly beyond. Even the Nexus has been struggling, but is still considerably better clear. Who is really looking for a tablet to play should in my view still prefer to wait for the Nexus 7 2 and expected to invest 269 version for the 32GB.

..............................Bedienung...................................................................................

Just recently came 7 update to Android 4.3 for the Google Nexus. Much has changed in terms of the operation by the update not to not to say almost nothing, what would a direct strike. The difference compared to 4.1.2 (the current latest version available for the Samsung) is a much more clearly.

Generally it can be said that it is possible both Tablets equally intuitive and fluid, but differ in detail. The first thing I noticed, is also subjectively. On me the surface from Nexus tidier acts. The icons are a bit smaller and thus have a somewhat greater distance what I like personally to each other. Left and right there are y'know dividing lines which determine the screen discreetly from the quick access panel or from the Google search and voice input. Overall, everything is very structured and tidy. What I really like in addition to the minimalism. The shortcuts are shown only as symbols and not additionally labeled. By one correspondence of symbols that is very positive and is just for clarity.
Confusing the Samsung is even but not in direct comparison it always seems a little "fully packed". Functionally, however, there are no disadvantages.

Can convince more the Samsung menu, which displays all open windows. Here you have the opportunity at the same time immediately access the task manager and the Google Search, and to close all open applications. When the Nexus interface is minimalistic again. While you can access the Google Search dispense well at the site is both Task Manager and the "All applications-Close" button very useful. If you have 20 applications and it must include all of the individual with a wiper, which can still very nervous.
Similarly, I find incomprehensible why it is not possible on the Nexus hold by holding on a blank area or folder shortcuts to add apps to the screen. Instead, one can thus only change the background but that's what I'm never so would exactly this function can be rationalized away and not vice versa. Very annoying.

Better succeeded the apps and widgets menu on the Nexus. Besides the fact that in each row an app more fit and thus we must be less leaves, the black background and the smaller font is still significantly easier on the eyes. The additional category "Downloads" is missing on the Nexus and I just say, thank goodness, because nobody needs. In the widget menu the background black and the contrast is so much better. One gets much quicker overview and can more quickly and efficiently browse and find quickly what you're looking widget.

Also better the separation between activities and settings in the status bar. No one wants to see the settings if he received a Facebook message or email. A great improvement in detail how I find that works well as grand and comfortable in practice.
In the settings menu itself I miss it when Nexus displaying the date and time (it is simply hidden) and especially a GPS shortcut (on / off). But why this is missing for a Flight Mode button is available (so I drive a car more often than I fly airplane ...) eludes me any logical explanation. When there is this Samsung airplane mode not as a shortcut but for a vehicle mode. Why was verschlimmbessert with the current Adroid for me wiegesagt incomprehensible.

Again, only a detail but certainly worth mentioning: The Back button is located on the right of the Samsung home button on the Nexus left. Intuitively, one would (probably because on the computer of the back arrow is left) press always left to come back and so opens on the Samsung the Tab menu. Annoying but you can get used. The distance between the 3 function keys on the Nexus also a little bigger, which I think is better and also is visually pleasant.

Noteworthy, is positive on the Samsung an additional upward arrow in the menu bar. By pressing this opens a Quick Access toolbar to alert email, MP3 player, calculator, scheduler, task manager and world clock. What you do not need it you can just hide, so, for example, always appear only email and scheduler. How do I find practical, if not imperative, since you also can put everything on the home screen.

+++++ +++++ Conclusion
The current version of Android is currently only available on the Nexus 7 and will also be not so readily available on the Samsung my experience or even no longer be issued for the Samsung. A loss this is only in the details, in some respects, you can even lucky, the update does not have to. So for example, lacks the Task Manager and the "All-Close" button in the tab menu and also a GPS shortcut. Refrain from these feelings are on a clearer app and widget menu, as well as the separation between alerts and settings in the menu bar, as well as the Back arrow to the left of the home button. Yes that may be details but there are details which unfortunately again and again attracting attention.

..............................Lautsprecher...................................................................................

There is not an exception not much to say. To watch videos and games ranging from speakers installed and not be distracting or intrusive. Music, however you do not want to hear long so voluntarily. They are the bottom line is not sincerely a little better than most smartphone speakers and also adequate but noisy.

+++++ +++++ Conclusion
Sufficient but no longer is the conclusion here. Somewhere must be gesparrt apparently. Between the devices there is no decisive difference sale.

.............................. Overall conclusion from the point of price / performance and future viability ........... ................

Both devices are good and worthy representatives of the middle class tablet market and you have to now definitely ask: Why should I spend more money on a tablet? The opportunities offered by both units from the point of price / performance are enormous and neither of the two devices is one from today's perspective to the scrap heap, for a purchase would no longer worthwhile. The Asus Google Nexus 7 claims in this comparison although his position as a reference instrument in the middle class, however, you look at the aspect of price / performance, the air is thin, very thin. The Samsung Tab2 with 8GB of internal memory and 32 GB micro SD is currently getting for a total of 165. For the Asus Google Nexus 7 32GB permanently installed memory you have currently expect at least 235. Thus, the competition from Samsung all 30% or 70 is cheaper. For these 70 less you take primarily compromising in terms of display quality and game performance into account. All other aspects are either minor in the operation or subjective factors like the feel of the rubberized surface of the Nexus than plain of Samsung.

For Tablet beginners who might not have a smartphone and want to first of all keys to the technology approach, I recommend the Samsung because this device hingt functionally certainly not 70 afterwards. I also recommend the device as a second unit, for example for permanent outdoor use on the go, wherever one be highend device is too good for. Experienced tablet users who want to "shoot" a low-priced device should best on the release of the new Nexus 7 (expected on 29 August 2013) to wait. It is estimated that the 32GB version of the old Nexus will then be the end of September of electronics conglomerates for 199 as an offer on sale. Who does not want to wait the 2 months, I recommend again at least 3 weeks for the new Nexus 7 2 to wait, especially. Due to the larger memory, the smaller thickness and lower weight Although Full HD display sounds very good and also the faster processor seem a gain be, but not stand out in the end, because color reproduction and contrast my information remain the same after about and the higher resolution eats the gain in performance depending on the application in part or entirely.

Never the middle class tablet market in terms of price / performance was as attractive as now. If you want the Samsung can now strike and makes no mistakes. Who needs the extra performance and in terms of image quality is demanding, should wait for the new Nexus. The old Nexus is expected to the end of September are very attractive in terms of price / performance again and then turns out to be highly likely as the new, old bargain among the middle-class devices, which in all respects, except for the irrelevant for many users gaming performance of "High-End 3D Games ", is equipped for the future.
