Harman Kardon Onyx Portable Home Wireless speaker system (Bluetooth, AirPlay, DLNA) white (Personal Computers)

Customer Review

First of all, there are two versions of this speaker:
The Harman Kardon Onyx (MSRP 500, - Euro) and others with line-in, NFC and a larger battery and the light version Harman Kardon Studio Onyx (MSRP 200, - Euro) only with Bluetooth connection. Sonically they should both be the same.
I have the latter enthusiastically for almost half a year and am.

For little readers in brief:

Pro:
- The Sound! Wow!
- The volume
- As a music equipment replacement in conjunction with mobile phone, laptop, tablet well suited.
- Processing
- After about 30 minutes without music, the speaker automatically switches to standby.
- Bluetooth pairing works automatically (with HTC One M8)
- Rubber Dämfpung when putting down
- The Price

Neutral:
- The design (is always a matter of taste). I like it.
- The fabric cover looks chic, but is also sensitive for mobile use.
- The fabric can be taken off the way.
- Very spartan. Only Bluetooth. The single switch: on / off, volume up / down, Bluetooth
- It would be nicer if the feet were folded so that it is less bulky.
- No Bluetooth 4 and no APTX (but have the fewest and the sound is so good)
- The USB port on the back is only for maintenance; for end users ie without function.
- Height and weight

Negatives:
- No manual (only a small flyer)
- As you can see, when the speaker is charged?
- The rubber plug on the feet should stick to because they dissolve easily.

For those interested (General, tests and advice):

Where can you use a mobile speaker:
1) Garden / Garden Party or terrace / balcony
2.) home
3.) Campsite / Camping
4.) At Picnic
5.) In the gym (sports events) / tennis / table tennis
6) Other occasions outdoors.
7) While traveling in the hotel room
8) At the beach
9) At work (when you want to hear, for example, own music from your phone)
10. (everything already experienced) When cycling / skiing)
11) to teach in the college / uni
12) at the drive (if the phone can receive FM radio)
13), etc.

The possible applications are thus very diverse.

Considering all the possibilities, should a mobile speakers have the following features:
- He would have to be small enough to have him everywhere pocketable.
- He would weigh little.
- He would have to have a great sound.
- He would have but can also sound for a whole garden sufficient.
- And it should also cost less.
Since I have been determined three years so wanted a speaker, I can say:
So a speaker does not exist.
Small speakers simply do not have a lot of strength and large are just great.
While trying Bose, Sony and Co outsmart physics to meet the points, but I do not just successful.
The solution is quite banal: you buy a large and a small speaker.

Criteria on which you can look for when Speaker Test:
- Is the sound long-term fit, or annoys the speaker after a certain time?
- Some speakers hear in itself, as if you were playing a poorly encoded mp3 file
- If the maximum volume sufficient?
- Is the sound at low volume as at high volume?
- Some speakers sound great, with music with a few instruments, but have difficulties when it is rocking and playing many instruments simultaneously.

A few impressions of various speakers that I had at home and have been extensively tested (here's just a sample):

Bose:
Bose seems to me (like Apple) to have a large fan base. A bit like champagne. I equal Bose criticize, I so do not wonder me if this review is not some taste.
I had the Bose SoundLink II home. High price, great processed. Angemacht and the first impression was: Wow, that comes out from these small speakers? I let the speakers run for a while, and somehow I do not burst open after a while, that because speakers are on. You have annoyed me. You know that if they make music and think, finally rest? I have the speakers then connected directly to a high-end CD players, but with no change. Since I am rather skeptical about Bose speakers. I had at the same time, the Nokia Play 360 at home and then I decided to go for the Bose and converted again.

Nokia Play 360:
When long-term hearing I found it more enjoyable than the Bose speakers. The A & O's that a speaker does not bother! A major advantage of Nokia speaker is that you two can couple together and then play them in proper stereo. Too bad that the other speakers can not. Bottom line, the Nokia were too weak and the sound was not really wow. And neither one thing all: Too Big for the holidays or in order to have always with you, and too weak for outdoors. And then at the Nokia moreover, that I asked myself every day, whether you're listening to even as much as the day before. A recurring doubts about the sound.

Sony SRS-X3:
And so it was that I was about a year ago half the business and the Sony SRS-X3 have heard. I bought it for testing. The first impression was processed as with the Bose SoundLink II. Toll. Angemacht and I thought: Wow, that comes out from these small speakers? And they really sound good but only for just about exactly 50% volume. If one makes it softer, the bass to the fore. If we make it louder bass no longer, but less. A completely different sound depending on the volume. And then they greatly distort at higher volumes.

Sony SRS-X5 and X7 / Bose SoundLink III and Mini:
I have the Sony brought back. In business, the Sony SRS-X5 and X7 very distorted at high volume. I then consulted the current Bose speakers.

Harman Kardon Onyx Studio:
The Bose speakers had disappeared on the spot out of my memory, as the seller's just newly arrived Harman Kardon speakers anmachte Onyx Studio. I found him a bit big and the design clearly differs from other speakers.

- You have a pleasant clear sound with a great bass. A completely different league as Sony, Bose and Co.
- The sound is at low volume almost the same as at high volume. Top!
- You are absolutely suitable for long-term (they run all the time, as I write this review). No trace of pain in the ass.
- The sound on audio books (ie of votes) is perfect!
- If you have something to fall asleep listening to the speakers go to standby at the end.
- They are noisy even in battery mode. With electricity they put even up a gear.

Here is an impression of volume (with external power supply) and HTC One M8:
30% = easy listening (my default volume in the closed space)
40% = still relaxed in larger rooms
50% = floor and desk begin to vibrate noticeably by the Bass
60% = It is critical because of the neighbors
70% = The ground shakes. The speaker begins to distort slightly, but still quite OK.
85% = really noisy. Max. 5min. to the neighboring rings. Distortion little stronger but considerably low for the volume.

Suggestions:
Since the speakers (as well is in most) are even stronger when they are connected to the power, I bought an external battery, which also provides the needed 19 volts (the currently costs about 90, -, but he supplied if necessary, mobile, tablet, and even the laptop with plenty of power):
RAVPower® 23000mAh External battery pack Multi-voltage 5V-20V for smartphones, tablets, netbooks, laptops
If the speaker 2.600mAh the built-in battery has (Duration 5 hours) and the battery fabled 23.000mAh can imagine how long the Combi running. And at full power!

Another consideration relates to the new mobile phone HTC One M9. Because it can connect thanks to HTC Connect with up to three Bluetooth receivers, it may be possible to provide two or even three of the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio same with music.

As a transport bag I have taken for the speaker a black Nike sports bag (size approx 34x44cm), in which the speaker, including power supply fits in exactly.

Now, if necessary, missing only the small speakers:
I have the Wavemaster Mobi 2 (23, -). An inexpensive Bluetooth speaker with little wow factor, but completely relaxed during long-term use and with a very long battery life. A pleasant speaker.

Addendum 05.15.2014:
Yesterday was the Lord's Day and so the speakers came at a garden party for use. He was connected to the grid and was about 10 meters from the party hotspot away. Conclusion: He ran many hours without nerves. The good sound much also guests on. The maximum volume that we dared to test (for the neighbors) was just over 60%. There are so few opportunities to bring the speaker to its limits. And 60% of Onyx without distorting get small speakers not even with distortion towards. The Bluetooth connection (Mobile Phone Speaker) held throughout the garden. A rubber foot has dissolved again and must go to be stuck again.
