Well, when I saw the trust line of the reviews here, I was added to ponder whether I was just kind of interrogation, or the plate just always completely stopped at the wrong moment, moved the letter to "The River" but again in deliberately to let affect me rest. (NB. I just do my fun and hear on the home straight for appearing in March new album "Wrecking Ball", all Springsteen albums chronologically, so go its development paths after) Now, injuring me, with all the admiration for Springsteen I'll stay with four stars for "The River", which even now is not a damning indictment.
When comparing the previous record "Darkness on the Edge of Town" sounds, knowing that in this production time enough excellent material was present for a double album (without the typical clinical picture that to fill two plates, Songs with land on the album, you can also stay would have), yet only a widespread single album with ten songs appeared, one wonders why now, two years later, where absolutely enough great songs for a wonderful album existed, but has just been implemented not for two plates, the idea of a double album.
"The River" was not with the title song and "Hungry Heart" two gigantic world hits in the set, so can "Darkness ..." not used, both a nature entirely different, both classic and popular songs cope even with casual listening, the now necessarily want to have everything from Springsteen in the closet. The song "The River" is also independent of the world hit status one of the ten most beautiful ballads that Springsteen has ever written. And "Hungry Heart" Party rock in the best sense, the song is fun, again and again.
And by no means is with these two numbers of the album exhausted, who commutes between great and awesome. And not without reason - just the powerful rock songs "Ramrod", "Two hearts" and "Out in the Street" dive since now more than thirty years conspicuously frequently in the set lists of Springsteen's concerts. These numbers ignite easily. And in the ballads Group, can be found on "The River" invaluable pearls, kitsch genuine emotion that compels to listen. "Points black", "Drive All Night", "Independence Day" and the title track, already mentioned above are ballads for eternity, all great art! And also in the field in between, no ballads, but also not fully meet the twelve songs are integrated with "Wreck On The Highway" and especially "The Price You Pay" into the album, which have everything you admired Springsteen. A gripping, ungestelzte story, catchy but not unimaginative melodic, powerfully implemented.
Now I praise here long lines in front of me and was now gently but sometimes justify why I depart this basic masterpiece a star.
The album starts (maybe only in my ears) conceivable unhappy with three songs that I would make the symptoms of the double album's disease. Now I'm quite self-critically assume that it is because of my individual perception, what the heck.
For me, "The Ties That Bind", "Sherry Darling" and "Jackson Cage" in all respects typical Füllsongs, not bad, not embarrassing, but also anything but somehow impressive, important, or even good. When an album starts so, of course, is already the first scratches in the paint, annoying. All three and also Title 14 "I'm a rocker" I would rather have seen on The 1998 tracks box where Screened and leftovers was bundled, although since partially emerge songs where you would like to ask: Boss, why hast thou us long withheld?
Well, then there's a song. "I wanna merry you". Touching, is not it?
I would be very interested in what Springsteen has ridden since, this song writing 1. take 2nd and 3rd also publish yet.
"Oh darlin 'There's Something happy and there's something sad, about wanting somebody oh so bad, I wear my love, darlin', without shame, I'd be proud if you would wear my name - oh yeah little girl I wanna merry you , yes I do, little girl, I wanna merry you ... "
The text of a rock song should not be measured against the standard of world literature, but it did not work. This is worst hit lyric. And so the number is around, be inspired Springsteen probably at the then ZDF hit parade. The thing is also a melodic pop! Certainly, embellished by the sound of the E-Street Band, but the whole structure of the song refers clearly to colleagues Bernd Clüver and GGAnderson, because both have the number (of course garnished with real keyboard violins and pathologically fixed permanent smile) triumphant success celebrated on coffee tours, car dealership openings and Baumarkt-anniversaries.
All in all, however, "The River" of course a great album and should be in every collection. Sorry about the missing star.
