START AND USER INTERFACE
The installation is very quick and is consistently self-explanatory. Starting the device generally takes about 30 seconds. The user interface is very reminiscent of the PlayStation 3 (Sony is probably standard), but a little jerky. Nevertheless, everything is clearly laid out and visually appealing: There are the categories facility, Photo, Music, Video, Network, Sony Entertainment Network and recommendations.
INTERNET
Only after the function Internet video is activated, you get an overview of various Apps. These include Tagesschau, Sat.1, ProSieben, kabel eins, sixx, ServusTV, LOVEFiLM, MUBI, DFB highlights, Euro Sport, MUZU.TV, Euro News, German wave, sevenload, Bild.de, YouTube, Billabong, Wired, Epicurious .com, Concierge.com, Style.com, Daylymotion, uStudio, GolfLink.com etc. Here you can make some great discoveries and get to know the possibilities of interactive television. The programs are very clearly worked as tiles, there are pleasant short charging times and the playback function and navigation is simple. The videos themselves run smoothly.
In the category of music, there are Apps of Berlin Philharminiker, tap.tv, Moshcam and National Public Radio.
The Web browser was a bit slow and is with the remote control understandably awkward to use. Thus, so rather a nice addition.
Playing content
The playback of content is easily achieved. Very positive is the fact that the disc tray opens even when the state directly when you press the eject button, without the player must boot. The picture quality proves to be consistently excellent. Just DVDs shine through the automatic scaling up to 1080p in a new light and in unfamiliar brilliant sharpness. The BDP-S390 features an HDMI, a composite and a digital coaxial audio output. Unfortunately there is no way to connect an optical cable, but also the Tonperformance is not yet great. I had the feeling that the sound quality more higher compared to the PS3, it sounds spatial and punchier. Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised by the overall performance of the player.
Very commendable is the operating volume of the S390, since one hears really absolutely nothing. Even after many hours of use you might think that the device is not turned on.
There is also a USB port on the front and a LAN cable port on the back.
SUPPORTED FORMATS
Supported formats are XviD, AVC-HD, MPEG4, MPEG1 / 2, MKV, M2T, MTS, VOB and VRO (Video), JPEG, GIF, PNG (photo) and MPO, MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV (audio). The S390 is compatible with DVD, Blu-ray (NTSC / PAL), CD, Super Audio CD (SACD) and USB, but will not play 3D Blu-rays.
REMOTE CONTROL
The supplied remote control knows too much convincing. Particularly striking is that it is still responding well from the umöglichsten positions. It is just over 100 grams is not too light and not too heavy and sits comfortably in the hand. The buttons should be easy to operate even for all finger types, the key number is more reduced, for example, there is no zoom function.
There is also to use an iOS or Android Geröt as remote the possibility of using additional app (Sony Media Remote).
OTHER BUSINESS
- There is a screen saver, the power turns off after a while of itself
- Photos can be played as a slide show
- Skype is not possible
- The power consumption is 11 W
- Unfortunately, there is no display
CONCLUSION
The Sony BDP-S390 is a terrific Blu-ray player entry-level model that stands out with its simple operation, great images and Tonperformance, support for many formats, good remote control, WiFi and DLNA features and quiet operation volume. The only disturbing point is perhaps the lack of display, however, you can thanks to the soft key certainly get over. (4.5 of 5)
