Customer Review

Looking for the best one must first consider the criteria for themselves are most important. For me it was:
- Shooting in low light conditions and
- The camera must be as bright that it allows all without flash (I am a declared opponent of flashing, the with the exception of professional studio equipment arise when flashing many disadvantages: lightning creates sharp edges and shadows, destroying usually always the mood of the scene, flash takes too long to recharge for snapshots and who wants the baby already flashing in his eyes)
- Fairly handy (otherwise I can also buy an equal Digital SR-camera, which then has a better price-performance value)

Now for the candidates who were shortlisted selection:
- Predecessor NEX 5: 14 to 16MP make no great difference in resolution
- Olympus XZ-1: unlike the other cameras with interchangeable lenses, this is the only point and shoot model with an integral lens
- Olympus PEN E-PM1 very nice, handy model of Micro Four Third Generation
- And the successor model NEX 7: MP be upgraded to 24, dimensions of the sensor remains identeisch (23,5mm x 15,6mm)

In the category of dark places, the order of significance is (low) as follows:
- NEX 5N, NEX 7, NEX 5, E-PM1, ZX1
How kommt`s? The NEX is incredibly strong resolution with the 24 MP but with the same dimensions of the sensor, this leads to the problem of zangsläufig Interdependence between the pixels on the sensor, which then leads to noise. Therefore, the 5N proposes the 7 !!! And who his pictures only to max. A1 would raise and not equal to a house wall, which extends the 5N completely.
The predecessor model is not stronger in spite of the above logic. Firstly, the different style-MP is from 14 to 16 and on the other marginal 5N has the obvious superior electronics.
The Micro Four Third, I think it's great, but falls into this category significantly. The small Olympus XZ-1 is against the APSC sensor completely no chance.

Handiness:
OK is smaller is better. Then the XZ1 is unbeatable, especially since I do not have to fiddle around with lenses here, which also keeps the price very clear.
All other candidates are for my needs at the same level.

Without flash:
After more than 6,000 photos with 5N I can say that up to ISO 800 is still sufficient qualitative claim. In addition you can still claim as their photo with sentimental value only.
Combined with the 18mm pancake 2,8f which gives a killer combination in which one still achieved in the house in any light a decent result. As I said - always without flash.
Below I have written something to the edge of the pancake. I recommend at least. 3,2f because the sharpness increases significantly. Stems pictures can even shoot up to 1 / 80sec, this includes increasingly blurs on. With these values, I can shoot exclusively lamplight well-exposed pictures in a room. DAs that's what I wanted.
What I also liked a lot the fact that is the NEX has no flash. That makes it even handier. This is, however, and can be screwed easily when required as Austeckblitz.

Summary of criteria and results:
On balance, the Olympus XZ-1 does offer the best maneuverability, but can not satisfy my requirem in terms of light intensity and therefore falls out. Nevertheless, in my opinion, the best point and shoot that there are on the market currently.
The Olympus PEN is also a very nice compromise. The 5N can but stand out clearly in the brightness of the PEN series, although the difference is not fundamental.
The successor model NEX 7 is indeed mistaken in the resolution, just does not match the my Anforederungen. On the contrary, my request the brighter is even better fulfilled by the 5N. In addition, the 7 is also significantly more expensive. The predecessor model the NEX 5, however, is noticeably weaker in intensity than the 5N or megapixel monster 7N. The 5N established itself as the leader in this category and therefore my favorite.

Other abnormalities of 5N:
Lenses:
OK the lenses of combination NEX-5NDB are no quality. This is also the main drawback of this camera. For demanding applications, there are (still) no reasonable lenses. However, Sony has recognized this dilemma and freigegegen the E-mount specifications for 3rd party. Prompt has now launched a few weeks ago a first very high-quality 18-200mm specifically for NEX Tamron. The test pictures, which I've seen on a Japanese side compared to the standard 18-55 of Sony, documenting the superiority of Tamron. At twice the price one must probably expect. The crop factor is in the NEX 1.5 thus provides the Tamron 27-300mm focal length on a standard norm converted.
Other lenses are to follow, just once googling "NEX Lenses roadmap". It is a pity that the Tamron sowiel costs as the entire 5NDB-bundle with 2 lenses.

Above, I had the 16mm pancake described as a killer combo for high-intensity requirements. After several thousand photos has been found that the sharpness is pretty neat. However, one should stop down the aperture significantly. 2.8 is quite soft. The 3.2 is significantly better and above 3.5 can speak of razor sharp.
A pity, I find that you do not get the body in combination with exclusively the Pancake. Then you could austaushcen the average 18-55mm against the high-order Tamron. Body and Pancake purchase separately makes no sense, because the same price as the bundled with the 18-55 inclusive.
Ergo, I would say, if it should be the 5N, then you can not get to the 5NDB bundle. The pancake is awesome and I get paid to 18-55. Even if I do not satisfy the standard zoom my requirements, I can still sell and define the good from Tamron me.

SteadyShot / Anti Motion Blur:
The Sony designated SteadyShot is an anti Verwacklungssystem, which is not installed in the camera but the lens. Sony argued that diees is superior to the CCD shift technology. Fact is definitely that it works only if the Lins beherrscsht this. And here we were already at a disadvantage at the Pancake. Because this lens as opposed to the 18-55 and 18-200 has not built this lens technology and does not control this function. OK, it holds the lens in a slim and wide-angle fixed focus lens, it is certainly less necessary than with a zoom. Still, I find that very regrettable, because that is a good part of "low-light capability," this lens ruined again. From 1 / 80sec to shake down the photos. That had surprised me at first, because with Verwacklungsmechnismus should be able at stationary objects in the vicinity to make matters to 1/30 without shaking recordings. But the sad truth is that the pancake this function simply does not possess.
As an alternative, at Sony nor the "anti-motion blur" mode. Here 1/250 and high ISO of 1600 fast 6 photos are shot consecutively and then zusammegefügt of the software to a photo at high speed. Unfortunately, I have to say though, that I am not convinced this feature. This technology can not compensate for the blur caused by a moving object. The individual photo freezes movement with 1/250 while, but in the period of 6 pictures corresponding to that turn, a total exposure time of an estimated 1/2 second. Any camera movement or movement of the object is included in the continuous shooting. Earnings are also blurred contours in motion. To be honest I can see no difference in this case to a longer exposure time.

Response time:
Some attribute so that the response time is still left to be desired. So I can not confirm that. At least with the Pancake (zoom not needed), the camera suuuper quickly. Press and Photo is there immediately. Also can be very fast shooting with continuous fire pictures in succession - as gschätzt about 9 pieces. The rate amounts to as approximately 3 pictures per second. After the barrage of about 9, the rate drops to around 1 per sec Photo. In other words, but you can then still permanently take a picture. There are other than special applications virtually no limitations. I empfindes both the reaction time and the processing time to be excellent.
These values refer to JPG. in the best resolution. Unless you of course with RAWs works or other formats RAW + JPG, naturally arise very different values. Unlike the many cameras that I have previously owned and partly also still use these, the 5N is the best (Canon 300D, Dimage S4, Panasonic Lumix FZ-10, Panasonic LX-3).

Battery Life:
I have read something about 400 pictures per charge. Under certain conditions, may be true. But just as one can also say 5,000 (that's right: five thousand shots) per charge. The truth is that there are various factors that influence the battery life significantly:
- A real power guzzlers is the flash (about 3 times flashes period away one percent performance, but also in turn depends on the amount of flash light / compensation)
- A pancake does not require energy for the zoom.
- Furthermore, the Pancake requires (unfortunately) no charge for SteadyShot technology which compensates for camera shake by moving the lens, as this technology quite simply absent in the 16mm pancake.
- Also depends on what frequency you shoot photos and how long you just anläßt the camera.

The Pancake camera after about 1,000 pictures has more than 80% load power. This calculates to a value of 5,000. As you can see this value therefore depends on different factors. Overall, I would say that the energy consumption is very moderate and it does not require flash to well over 1,000 pictures per battery charge.

Handling:
The camera fits comfortably in your hand and makes a very solid impression. The body is made of Mangesium-alloy. That was until a few years ago only the absolute high-end professional cameras Reserved. With two lenses 16mm and the 18-55 Camera is imme still comfortably in the hand. Flashes when it needs to, however, could represent in the 18-55 at near objects, a problem as it might cast a shadow. The Pancake at least is not affected by this problem.

Operation:
The operation is mostly electronically. Even the program selected via the software. Personally, I'm a friend of manual selection of aperture, shutter speed, ISO and use therefore mainly the manual mode. Sometimes you already miss a separate button on the body, with which I could adjust immediately. But on the plus side you have the Sony concede that the software has a logical structure and I have all the features found by trial and error in a few minutes. And if I rausgekomme the after a few minutes, then one can say that the operation is intuitive and the software has a logical structure.
Very nice, I think the function on the screen to set the focus. When the main subject has to GNP on the edge in the foreground, is often focused on the background. If you now touched the object of desire on the screen, the result is at this point a window on the screen and the focus is automatically directed to this subject. The software detects the subject now continually. Even when the camera pans this remains always in focus.
A little touch on another point directs the focus to immediately. This feature is awesome and I think that's just great.

Volume:
Who knows nich clicking but an SLR. But even if the technique of NEX without the mirror makes do, which is why it is so small, too, so they did not become not necessarily quieter. As probably the biggest shortcoming of 5N I would describe the volume. The sound is really clearly audible. I wüde say even a bit louder than a normal SLR. For nature photographers who make therefore less suitable to shy objects game. Also not necessarily recommended if you want to photograph a performance, while due to the noise caused not want to get into the limelight himself.

Conclusion:
The NEX 5N closes the gap of the ambitious bridge cameras to the more professional SLR increasingly. Thanks be to the APS-C sensor which is already installed in SLR.
The NEX 5N offers incredible performance in a very handy format. In combination with the Pancake suitable to achieve more than any other in low light even excellent results. Good usability, logical structure and an outstanding quality complete the picture.
The weaknesses in the standing to available lenses will gradually corrected. The lenses of the bundles are very cheap and allow before a very ordinary home. I personally do not mind the clicking noise, but one should be aware that this property can be distracting in certain situations.

I would recommend the camera to a friend warmly.
