Canon EOS 6D full-frame digital SLR camera with Wi-Fi and GPS (20.2 megapixels, 7.6 cm (3 inch) screen, DIGIC 5+) only housing (electronics)

Customer Review

First of all: The 6D is a great camera, I do not regret the purchase. Nevertheless, the device is for me light years of a 5-star rating away as in the development of many points insufficient brain power was invested. I as with my previous models (60D, 7D, 5D Mk. II) feel the device was developed by managers and engineers, but never pushed a photographer in his hand.

The Canon EOS 6D makes great images, housing and viewfinder are excellent, the autofocus sufficient for stationary subjects. The focusing screen is supplied only for snapping well (manual focusing or control the sharpness is so pure gambling), with the disc type S, it makes a lot of fun. The back controls the 6D are well to the artificial distinction between the more professional product lines (currently 7D Mk. II, 5D Mk. III and 1Dingens) intentionally small and spongy designed to set appropriate incentives for permanent users. After a short training you can, however (at least without gloves) work well enough so that, especially since anyway keeps the number of AF points in boundaries.

The exposure can be on good terms in everyday life More field. With the right number of measurement fields, the camera forms the dynamic range of the scene very well on the sensor, so that you will be as Hobbyknipser so have his joy. If you do not correct the shooting in RAW converter, but want the same exposure on, can also draw on the classic metering or two further restricted ranges. However, their icons are not all understandable without instructions.

The operating concept is felt at the level of the 80. There is the good old PASM wheel plus two dials, which noticeably reaches its limits as soon as you want from the four variable quantities speed, aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation value (or factor tip) check three pieces. Silly it is, especially if you turn on Auto ISO and M-mode then there is no exposure, even in the Quick Menu This is simply disabled. That's a shame, because M plus Auto ISO could in the low-light situations arise a lot of sense in which shines the sensor 6D. You could set the lowest speed and aperture, with the one just hinbekommt sharp images, and take so much noise in the purchase, as maintenance is necessary. And precisely in these situations (drama, concerts, indoor sports, people at dusk,) you can not do without the exposure, since it has a lot to do with artificial light sources such as headlights and lanterns in the picture, and unlit backgrounds.

In A and S-mode (with Canon Av and Tv) can be photographed very good, especially with the very accessible exposure to the rear wheel can work perfectly (although 7D, 5D, etc. of course much better feel). P works much better than older models because the program shift is not reset after each shot. In M mode now works the exposure lock, which extremely a lot of fun: you can about measuring towards and save a dark spot, then pivot on the lights, see the contrast range which (at least within the limits of -3 to +3 EV) and finally both markers push around by adjusting the exposure! What I still lack to my happiness is in addition to a larger display area (approximately -5 to +5) or a shift function (as in P) and a one-time adjustment of the exposure measured by pressing a button (so that the change of the location Gekurbel saves). The M-mode is on the bike next to the aperture priority, what comes to meet me in person. Not as nice is jeodch that each mode always has its own values memory. I'll go quickly from A to M, I suddenly have the panel set that I happened three days before used in a completely different shooting conditions.

Excellent is that the AE-Lock can be switched on permanently, unlike older models, so that the camera does not forget anything again, after four seconds. Unfortunately, however, shows the contrast indicator (in the viewfinder and on both displays) is still not the difference between the set and measured exposure. This works incomprehensibly still only in M mode.

A number of features sound good on paper, but are limited in practice to use: The spot metering can not be put on a button and therefore requires three operating steps without support in the viewfinder. Of the four measurement methods also can not disable. The AF points can be okay after some practice with the rocker drive, but you can not configure to reset the central field the button in the middle. Also reset the exposure compensation can not put this button you. Instead of useful and obvious functions, however, you can use z. B. a copy of the existing menu-button knob. Similarly crazy is the use of bracketing: the distance between the individual exposures must be every time via the Quick Menu set, while the number of recordings is available only through a completely hidden Custom function. Is also funny that you can select different AF points for horizontal and vertical alignment but unfortunately there is no way, this to rotate automatically, so that link above the top left even after the rotation remains. Well, the operation caused any case a single sustained WFT-feeling.

The two custom settings are reasonably useful in 6D as they are now updated after all, if you change something. Nevertheless, this function remains confusing and half-heartedly implemented, you never know quite know what settings actually differ just by the normal modes. In addition, the set mode can not be changed subsequently. As an example: I want to have a preference for concert photography that is different in almost every respect from my normal settings for Landscape or Portrait say Tv, spot metering, ISO value, AI Focus, silent shooting. Now I sometimes realize on site that everything is fine except for the exposure mode, which I would like to temporarily switch to M. However, this does not go, I can only turn the wheel on M and thus adjust everything from scratch. Again, this is not a necessary consequence of Canon's wrong decision to lay with exposure mode and custom settings, two different functions on a control element, eventually could allow the mode change yet in the custom menu. But no, the setting is simply blocked.

In addition to Custom Settings, there are still a number of automatic programs, but unfortunately, as usual, only for photography beginners neither for the user programmable are still traceable.

GPS and Wi-Fi I see at the moment as only limited suitable for everyday use. The wireless configuration is incredibly cumbersome and time again to reconfigure the switched but unused wireless also disabled unexpectedly the USB port. The software for PC and smartphones is completely immature. GPS seems endless power from the battery, even if the camera is turned off in the closet is You'd think that the motion sensor providing situational awareness could disable the recipient for longer periods of rest.

Another well-intentioned (but not cooked) function, the Picture Styles: Canon somehow protects them technically and / or licensing laws, so that Lightroom can not read them. Therefore, no continuous black and white workflow is still possible even when the 6D. This is very, very unfortunate, I would really like to go off on monochrome, and then import the images as well. Right now it's so that the recordings when importing only with their embedded JPEG preview (monochrome) appear, then renders Lightroom with the camera preset itself and everything is colored. Furthermore, there is still a long list of features that are distributed over the entire sub-menus, only in connection with JPGs make sense. One way to switch off completely superfluous features (see. Magic Lantern) would be more useful than a self-configurable page in the menu.
