Beyerdynamic DT 990 Edition 32 Ohm (Electronics)

Customer Review

This review consists of two experiences: The sound of the first installation and the sound of the next day.

First report:

As I read in some reviews, there were complaints about the sharp voice reproduction of the DT990.
In fact, I could even hear them. I heard, however, MP3 files (between 192-320kbs) on my Creative Recoon3D sound card, which I always thought she was going to play a very fine and precise sound. Think again!

Cowon S9 connected to the presented to sound "normal" setting another sound. The sharpening in the upper mids were almost gone. So the DT990 reacts very, very sensitive to the starting material. A big problem if you want to use the KH for mobile players, just like I had before. So I looked for the 32ohm version, the rest rather affects him like the Cowon S9 54Ohm, due to the slightly lower volume performance.

The DT990 takes time for installing the membrane. He loses, the longer I listen to music through it, the more sharpness. S-Zischellaute thus disappear after a few hours.

At the moment I can say the following to the sound:
The bass is very deep but not deeper than the Denon AH-D1001. Would say that both are on the same level. The bass precision, however at DT990 better, but not so kunturenstark how I hoped it to me. This can, however, still level off over time. However, what many customers and testers mention in their reports, the increase in the lower frequencies. Here I thought at first, my hearing would be beaten by the basses. They played 1. bloated and 2. not very precise. That lay however with time. The bass sounds now, although still strong, but rich and precise contours. Is this handset recommended due to the thickened bass for listening to classical music anyway?
Now, due to it's him. I must confess, so I like the sound of classical music must lose a piece of elegance. That's according to the shooting but also different. While the pieces of Arvo Pärt album "Tabula Rasa" bypasses generally discreet with Tieftonanteilen, there turn right into the soundtrack as some scores that much deep playing cello, horns and timpani vigorous use. In the case of the "Lord of the Rings" soundtrack just is thus lost in the deep bass frequencies precision and transparency. In addition, the aufgedickte deep bass range leads to a somewhat unpleasant droning through strong, deep-sounding brass inserts. In a pleasant, relaxed volume that falls not on unpleasant. However, those who like to listen to classical music very loud, is the DT990 have less joy.

Continue with the remaining frequencies:
In the middle of the DT990 sounds even a tad too gently or shy. There will gradually even out to the upper slightly throaty discoloration of female voices is still set.
The treble shines extraordinarily. For testing, I have listened to special classic pieces that savored the high range fully. Here I mention such as the album "Tabula Rasa" by Arvo Pärt. In these pieces violins (also solo) played to the highest sound levels. It is remarkable how much and yet so precise the DT990 can play those pitches. The best thing is in my view the fact that he as not round off the highs, but mercilessly plays.
As for the detail resolution, the DT990 can spoil the fun of listening to a music .... if you have either excessive feedstock or setter not just shines with a balanced frequency response. So you can hear for example in some pieces the composer "Max Richter" significant background noise (and I do not mean the stylistic device of him from time to time used). In other pieces you no longer hear this even, then so strong. This way, I'll take over the Creative sound card so true what I HD555 and a Denon AH-D1001 is not perceived as a Sennheiser. Anders turn on Cowon S9, in which the noise is much quieter and barely audible. On this player, I can hear the Beyerdynamic out details that were hidden from me before. It's almost as if the KH by seven the complete song to filter through to present to the audience the little gems that lie in each of the songs.

In terms of space, the DT990 behaves not exceptionally spacious, but more natural. I compare it with the Denon AH-D1001, the sounds squeezed, the DT990 comes up with a free, breezy playback without bumping into any limits. Likewise, spatial sounds of the Sennheiser HD555, which is sonically but far from the quality of the Beyerdynamic (it sounds more neutral and very easily occupied, but has little brilliance and resolution).

The comfort is good, but not as convenient as the Sennheiser HD555 of. Reason is the temple, pushing a little bit on the roof, but this thing is getting used to as I notice currently.
The DT990 is the way comes in a beautiful leatherette bag. The processing of the headphones I like good, except for the plastic slats on the sides.
I would have decided an alternative to the very neutral AKG K701. However, since I have an aversion to leather products and the headband is made of leather, I avoided the dominant sounding competitors. Perhaps the more appropriate alternative would have been the DT880.

My Conclusion:
The DT990 is due to its bass boost not really for monitoring. The bass I would have as little dominant - but not call it annoying because it does not cover the middle or swallowed details. But he does not play quite as precise in this area, as desired. The resolution and the accuracy of the high frequency range, however, is really fantastic. However, one should bear in mind that the DT990 is very sensitive to the quality of player. So if before has the Beyer to connect with a Gamer sound card to listen to music, could be disabused. On the whole, one can say that the Beyer is a fun handset with analytical character. He gives each song an extra dose of temperament, whether rock or classical.

UPDATE (a day later)

Unbelievable but true: I did last night to night sonicated the phone a few hours with music. This morning, as the same thing and now, in the late afternoon, the tone has completely changed. So I shocked at the beginning of this still sharp S-lutes and the unpleasantly dominant bass was, the sound has become a very different.
Vocals, whether male or female, sounding wonderfully vivid and natural without any sharpness. The centers are now a little more expressive, but still minimal too shy. The bass is now much more accurate, deeper and above all, he no longer sounds so dominant but only emphasizes something. And now the DT990 sounds on the sound card very good (and I thought that the sound card had a bad sound).

The following players were used: Cowon S9, Creative Recon3D, Samsung YP-U5, Denon PMA-700AE (amplifier) and Denon PMA 510AE (CD player).

Test music throughout the audition: (Small note: I have specially mainly tried much classical music as the classical music for headphones as well as speakers, the biggest challenge is in terms of resolution, frequency response, spatial and even with the accuracy of the bass).

Classical: (Vivaldi's Four Seasons - recomposed by Max Richter, Glory by James Horner, the Hobbit by Howard Shore, Tabula Rasa by Arvo Pärt, Symphony 8 by Philip Glass, Synphony No.3 Op78 of Saint Saens, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon by Tan Dun, The Village and Hunger Games and Snow Falling on Cedars (James Newton Howard), Floodplain by Kronos Quartet, also New Blood by Peter Gabriel

Rock / Pop: Kings of Leon, Muse, Emilia Torrini and the album Decade of Dreams Sophie Zelmani

On the MP3 players from Cowon and Samsung the DT990 sounds very balanced and yet exciting. Where he has a little more upper bass emphasis when Cowon what he does not do at Samsung. When Samsung player one can speak of a linear frequency response almost, if not there would be slightly audible bass emphasis on the DT990. But even classical sounds very transparent about the Samsung and the Beyer. The little bass boost gives so some pieces even more emotional power and lets the orchestra act rousing without muddying the bass. Here sounds even Hans Zimmer's monstrous bass rumbling in some of his sound racks still pronounced contours (eg Inception).
Sophie Zelmani's as Emilia Torrini's Acoustic pieces were close enough to touch. The plucking of guitar strings accented with light pressure. Nothing sounded oversized. Zelmani's voice was reproduced complex and hearty, slight heat, as they would whisper to the listener's ear. Emilia Torrini sounded delicate and yet present. In its appeal, girlish voice you could hear a slight roughness in deeper layers of vocals. All the while playing instruments over encamped at any time. Each had its clearly defined place in the song Nothing brings me down. And that probably mentioned on the Creative Recon3D sound card.

About the Denon duet I let the DT990 run through the headphone jack to listen to me the soundtrack to "The Hobbit" and "Glory" (James Horner). My expectations were very high and were not disappointed. Especially the opening titles to Glory "A Call to Arms" made me immensely excited. Here plays a large orchestra with a large choir in such dynamic and emotionally that it lies solidify me. From the musical climax in 2:45, in which the strings play so goosebumps producing and combative in the higher sound levels, the DT990 reached a point where the environment in which one finds oneself, unit in which at that moment into oblivion: The Denon amplifier has the Beyer even more thrust, awarded more space without thicken the low bass. He wraps the listener literally. What this amplifier there still could elicit dynamics and stage the DT990 was simply fantastic. Opposite the playback of MP3 players, the seat spacing between the string and wind ensembles was further increased slightly. The orchestra and the choir had huge powerful and bigger.

Conclusion No. 2:
I take back the first conclusion and values these headphones from four to five stars on. The sound is a dream after a long business phase. The search for a higher-quality, more expensive headphones has therefore no longer valid for me. So much more to quality will not possess themselves twice as expensive models. At least it's rather unbelievable to me.
Who has always been in search of a headphone, the more drama, more fun, more power brings out of each song, without losing the brilliance, the DT990 can finish with the Beyerdynamic his search. However, whether to recommend the AKG-K701 or the Beyerdynamic DT880 to look a closer look / listen for the neutral, transparent listening pleasure. The DT880 is a closed KH, which has a somewhat more linear frequency response compared to the DT990. So a little less powerful, but more precise bass and a little less pronounced brilliance. Many a tester wrote that the resolution was thereby only minimally worse than the DT990. Just listen times - but remember: These precious headphones need their break-in period. Patience pays off ;-)
