Sony BDP-S185 vs. LG BD650

Sony BDP-S185 Blu-ray / DVD player (Internet video) (Electronics)

Customer Review

Hello,

I have long wondered what Blu-ray player should I buy. The following aspects should meet the player:
Play BD / DVD -
- Mainly MKV and AVI files play.
- Not be too noisy as secondary player for the bedroom
- Accept NTFS formatted media
- Conveniently it should be, because as I said only second player (maximum 100 euros.)

Now I had the Sony BDP-S185 (black) and the LG BD650 in the shortlist. Since I could not make up my mind, I have both ordered me on Amazon. Both were priced at just 70% of my budget.

Delivery:
- As always with Amazon all the best and well packaged.

Design and manufacturing:
- The Sony S185 is beautifully small and light (probably the smallest player in the market at the time). The parts work but very cheap, but still sufficient if the player does not fall off or anything. Front is no display!
- The LG-BD650 is a bit bigger still relatively small compared to other players. At first glance, the LG looks high to me. On closer inspection, the processing is similar cheap as the Sony, but sufficient. In front is a display is available, which is not particularly easy to read because it is still very small.

Connections:
Both players from the terminals are almost identical.
The Sony has a LAN port (Ethernet port) for FW updates and Web content.

Menu:
Both menus are very easy to use. The menu runs the Sony much smoother and thus more quickly. When the menu LG increased and often times takes longer to load.

Blu-Ray / DVD films:
-The Sony has played all Blu-Ray without problems. Chapter jumps were possible without stalling or long waits. Even the normal forward / rewind were not a problem. Also DVD's he has played all off !!!
-The LG also played everything from !!! The first Blu-Ray (King Kong), he has hammered the same chapter jump and got stuck. After repeated on and off the player make he realized only after the 3rd attempt the Bluray again. Since so far, everything went without problems. Every now and then it depends a little bit at the fast-forward.

Upscale function in DVD:
- Looked at two players from the same. DVD now remains times DVD and Blu-Ray Blu-Ray remains !!! Do not expect miracles!

Volume !!!:
-The Sony has when starting a proper background noise after the BD / DVD, however, read the player runs relatively quiet. A certain volume is, however, noticeable. A CD is spinning not completely silent !!!
- The LG is compared to the Sony a bit louder and has an unpleasant background noise, which I can not define (a kind of hissing, buzzing). This tone is a bit annoying after a while. Especially at low volume. But if you always hear a bit louder, the it will not interfere.

USB port:
-The Sony recognizes problems NTFS formatted USB flash drives (32 GB) and hard drives (tested 500GB, NTFS). However, the USB port has apparently not have its own power supply. So I had the hard drive nor to a second additional USB port (for example, on TV or receiver) Connecting to tap into the power of here! Then it was but.
-The LG had recognized everything without extra power supply, here the LG has gained the first advantage.

Media player function:
-The Sony played all AVI and MKV formats from, except for one. Here was an error.
- The LG, however, played all files, even those that the Sony failed to (1 MKV format).

Update feature:
Sets off at Sony via a LAN cable with no problems.
- Not tested the LG, but should work on USB stick.

Internet content:
- Available only for the Sony. Have briefly the Pro7 library tested. The selection is modest, but worked. BD-Live, I have never been tested in a BD.
- When there is no LG Internet functions, as no LAN connection!

Remote Control:
- The remote control while Sony was great. You have goals, but then all key strokes are accepted.
- At LG we need some 4 - 5 times to press it reacts, especially if the LG is in "stressful situations", the coils etc.

CONCLUSION:
Ultimately, I decided for the Sony BDP-S185. For me personally, the volume was just too high on the LG BD650. The occasional halt in the menu and the coils of a film I was also a little disturbed at LG. The Sony was pleasantly smooth running and highly liquid at all. For this purpose he has played everything down to a MKV format (although I do not know which). Unfortunately, it lacked sufficient power supply at Sony for external 2.5 inch HDD. Who here has no cable with 2 USB ports, gets no juice on the plate. Anyway, when I tested by Toshiba. Maybe it's better in others.

Conclusion Sony:
+ Volume
+ Menu navigation and speed
+ Movie Playback (coils, chapter jumps)
+ Remote
+ Size
+ NTFS support
+ Has played everything from (DVD, Blu-ray, AVI, MKV *)
- No power for 2.5-inch hard disks with USB
- * 1 MKV format is not played

Conclusion LG:
Reproduced all + MKV and AVI
+ Recognizes all 2.5 inch hard drives with no extra power
+ NTFS support
+ Has played everything from (DVD, Blu-Ray)
+ Optics
- Volume
- Increased menu
- Movie Playback (coils increased from time to time)
- Remote
