Customer Review

I bought this unit yesterday. While not directly from Amazon, but I have nevertheless decided the first to review the Acer 5380BD deliver.

The application is intended purely for me as a TV replacement.

The packaging is simple, unfortunately without handle. The projector is kept very well padded in the bag supplied. The remote control is not available without lighting and rather plain. The carrying bag is ..... well enough, but in a home theater projector most probably do not care.

The projector itself has the connections on the side, which can be possibly unfavorable for some and unfortunately only one HDMI port. For this projector has adjustable feet on both! Pages front and back. The otherwise have virtually no other projector. For people without ceiling bracket to align perfectly safe. The lens is pretty stiff and does not wobble. From alone be adjusted as nothing more.

The picture quality is to use preset halfway. But something is necessary to readjust. The brightness and contrast are excellent and better than the other devices tested by me (Optoma H100, ACER X1340WH, Benq MW663, MW523 Benq). Only the Benq W750 is a little better on the setting.

Unfortunately it is not possible to provide the whole picture clean quite sharp.
This problem have all projectors in this price range and is due to the cheap optics. After setting sweaty work but I did it manage to derogations to max. To adjust 1/2 to 1 pixel. I assume that everyone 5380BD will have this problem varies depending on the series dispersion. 1 pixel offset to the worst point, however, is perfectly normal and had all the devices I tested. Only the Benq W750 / MW663 in this regard are better as better appearance, but also cost more.
Scattered light is easily available, but not annoying. Furthermore, the image edges are all almost perfectly straight (max 0.5cm deviation of 2 meters).
Chromatic aberration (color fringing, ghosting, max 1 mirror offset to the bad steady point) is as mentioned above exist, but as part and no longer falls on from a distance.
In Goßen whole, the optics must therefore be described as adequate. Something better you get near the price not, unless you have extremely lucky a "good" model with respect to catch scattering.
The distance from the screen has the 5380BD between 310cm and 340cm amount, so is very unflexiebel. This refers to the most commonly used screen width of 200cm. The projection rate is between 1.55-170: 1, depending on the zoom. It is important that the focus is only adjusted 15 minutes after switching on!
If you set them in cold projector, the image after some time is slightly out of focus. But once set in a warm state, the image is then also when cold enough and after a few minutes again sharply.
But this problem have many Projetoren, albeit to varying degrees. My W750 have only minimal. The X1340WH and the Optoma even stronger than the 5380BD.

To adjust the focus there is a test image at 5380BD. When the projector is turned on and no signal, ie you see the Acer logo on a black background, simply press the menu button. Then a typical test image with lines and circles appear. Here you can already written above, adjust the sharpness well in order to achieve an acceptable sharpness across the entire image. 100% clean never do you get the picture back but. The typical DLP color fringes in different forms and colors you always, depending on the series dispersion and quality of the optics. Up to about 1 pixel width you have to accept (is not Reklamationsgtund the manufacturer!). Otherwise, however, would have the more expensive lenses not have permission.
I was a bit shocked by this fringing on my first DLP and wanted to lodge a complaint. However, since all devices tested had this phenomenon, you have to accept that. The LCD Group has in some cases even more, because not 100% accurate tuning of the 3 LCD panels ghosting cause.

The volume of 5380BD is pleasantly quiet and very quiet even in dynamic mode. Only the Benq MW523 was, although in the recessions always criticized, equal quiet.
The Benq MW663, the Acer X1340WH, the Optoma Benq W750 H100 and in my opinion are definitely louder. The decibel information (DB) are apparently less meaningful than the actual volume level in the dynamic mode, which is probably the most used. On 100% Lamp power all the devices are simply useless, unless you have a party.
The 5380BD has installed only one fan, this is so thoughtfully placed so that he super ventilated the whole projector. The fan generates only one air noise, no hum or high frequency hum.

The menu is typical ACER-built and in addition to the pure presentation projectors contains settings for Gamma and Dynamic Black. So absolutely aureichend for home theater. Unfortunately, it is the Gamma Adjust only from 1.8 to 2.4. Others can do better beamer. Normally, the area should be sufficient.

The 3D capability is very good and only slightly worse than the Benq W750. Both the effect of depth, brightness, and the pop-outs are well. Flicker and ghosting there are virtually garnicht both devices. At Acer, the lamp brightness can adjust but in 3D mode, the Benq running in 3D mode always in normal lamp mode, which results in a high volume result. Change can not be that the Benq.
The triple flash 144Hz with only runs with native imagery, which is played at 24 fps. So either Blue-Ray with 1080 24p or via PC with the same settings. The projector then converts the pictures on 2x72Hz, ie 72fps per eye. This is absolutely flicker-free. In Sky 3D goes however not as Sky transmits in 1080i 50Hz. The glasses shutters then only in 100Hz and then you see the flicker significantly. 50Hz per eye are not flicker. 2D to 3D conversion, the device supports, in contrast to its predecessor, the H5370BD not.
This pseudo-3D is anyway not really good. Therefore, one can get over this lack of good function well.

The rainbow effect is very different in my opinion. I've been easily susceptible and see the effect very quickly, even though it bothers me only conditionally.
The Acer 5380BD is what concerns the rainbow effect is very good, as is the Acer X1340WH. You have to provoke downright through the eyes the effect in bright scenes.
The Benq MW663 and MW523 of Benq have a slightly stronger rainbow effect as the first two devices. This is often enough a slight eye or head movement to see this.
The Optoma H100 and Benq W750 have the strongest rainbow effect, no matter how the projectors are set. One can see the RGB colors partly without moving.
Why these large differences exist, I can not say. All projectors have either one or RGBCWY RGBCYW color wheel. Only the Optoma H100 RGBCWM color wheel. Whether here the arrangement of colors play a role on the color wheel, I can not say. The speed of the color wheel is 3 times for all devices.

One more thing on the subject of motion blur or ghosting:
Some devices fast movements cause silhouettes or be image content for brevity time blurred.
This effect was by far the most Optoma H100, for an advertised on the homepage Optoma home theater projector, sad.
The Benq MW663 and MW523 are of slightly better, as the X1340WH.
When Acer 5380BD and the Benq W750 This effect is almost not at all.
Menu items change in this picture behavior almost nothing, no matter what the device.

It is further noted that the Benq MW663, MW523 and the Benq Acer built X1340WH actually for presentations and lacking other menu options for the home theater. Gamma and dynamic black level are completely absent in these devices. Similarly, the adjustment of individual colors is not as extensive.
The W750 and the Optoma H100 offer ample options for this, who even by far the most H100 settings. The Acer 5380BD could have more choices, but they range normally from.

In summary, one can say that the Acer 5380BD is unbeaten in this price region and except for a few little things with the BenQ W750 is comparable. However, the image quality is slightly worse when Acer and BenQ much flexiebler in the exhibition, has 2 HDMI ports, an illuminated remote control and more options for the home theater. A big plus compared to the W750 is still the lamp life (10000std. Acer vs. 6500std. Benq) and the much lower demand for electricity (300W vs. 220W Benq Acer). The Acer uses a 190W UHP lamp, the 210W lamp Benq one.
The BenQ and Acer both have 2 years warranty. However, only the Acer additionally 5 years warranty on the DLP chip.

I personally would prefer the Benq Acer if you want to afford the additional costs.

I hope this helps other recession something in their purchasing decision.
From my unit gets 4 stars.
For 5 star but are a few little things that Acer could have done better.

Here again, a comparison of the positive and negative characteristics of Acer 5380BD:

+ 3 adjustable feet, thus very well suited for lifting the projector rear.
+ Carry bag and lens cap
+ HDMI with MHL support
+ 3D 144Hz
+ Bright and extremely high contrast image in 2D / 3D with useful presets
+ Well and quiet / Background Noise Free ventilation system
+ No ghosting during fast Bildbewegunggen
+ Adjustment for home theater.
+ Almost perfectly straight image edges
+ Currently cheapest HD home theater projector
+ Up to 10,000 hours lamp possible remains to be seen
+ Low power consumption with only 220W
+ Power supply and dimming the lamp almost silently
+ Supposedly dustproof encapsulation of the optical unit is showing the time
+ Lamp replaceable by own flap
+ Lamp relatively cheap

O sharpness and chromatic aberration (color fringing) typical for this price range

- Connections on left side, perhaps inconvenient for some
- Only 1 HDMI port, with home theater equipment should already be 2
- Remote control without lighting
- Low zoom (only 1.1)
- Settings for color adjustments could be more extensive
- No fixed Extreme Eco Mode as the MW523 available

Update: 12/02/2014:
There apparently is due to the wrong information about the device on the ACER website to misunderstandings, here the correct data, such as they are listed on the package again:

- 720p Resolution
- 3000 ANSI lm brightness
- Dust Shield
- 10000 hrs Lamp Life
- Instant Pack
- 40 ° Keystone
- ColorBoost II
- Color Safe II
- DLP 3D Ready
- HDMI 3D
- 3D 144Hz
- Eco Projection

Only the contrast is not given directly to the package.
On the Acer website is available in the overview 17000: 1, the technical data sheet is available but 13000:. 1 As everywhere on the Internet of 13000: 1 is written, I assume that this value is correct.
