The Powerline kit was delivered the next day. The devices look like processed by no means cheap, the switch is equipped with a black finish actually living room fit all the necessary (basic) Connectors are included. The LEDs on XAV101 are shining brightly, but can by configuration utility (included in the CD; later version of the Netgear site Download!) Are turned off; the LEDs of the switches, however, are very tired and almost impossible to detect in low light conditions. The packaging would be almost completely recyclable.
The installation was very simple: Connect the Ethernet Adapter to the router, connect switch (initially only) with Media Player and Internet radio, all the mains and: the Netgear have detected quickly, the connection is established after only a few moments, without having something here has great configure. Pure enthusiasm, just great! : D
Then came the disillusionment: The Internet Radio (IR Muvid 615) takes an eternity, to connect to the network (okay, maybe a problem the first time?), But then took a time-out message! The next time you attempt to minutes a connection is made to the Internet; which was so "wobbly" that even with strong signals misfire was - so I had never before! The Media Player (Egreat R2A) could indeed connect with the I-Net, but could not reach even after long minutes the media libraries of ARD and ZDF - well I knew differently, namely that was an instantaneous connection. What was going on?
Now I have the configuration software installed on the PC (Win7). The network devices have been found and easily recognized, as the data rate: only 5-7 Mbit / s on the Prio 1-port! Impossible ?! I then once both devices set to the factory setting: No change.
At this time, my whole installation so (maximum 1 additional computer via Wi-Fi network): XAV101 (Ethernet Adapter) in the study on power strip behind wireless switches, XAVB1004 (switch) in the living room behind the radio switches on multiple socket: Well the worst constellation! So I rebuilt: All radio switch out, as the SDLeiste in the study, for the XAV101 directly to the wall socket; in the living room, I have not really meaningful way to connect the Switch directly "in the wall". After all, so the data rate rose to 17-24 Mbit / s, but still too little.
At this point, the explanation of why I wanted to use wireless switches: Unfortunately, I could not in the printed manual, nor in the PDF on the CD, find concrete information on the standby power consumption. Since the devices but off by itself after a few minutes of inactivity, you can neglect the power consumption if necessary. One way to measure this is real but unfortunately I did not.
So, again, my next test: In the living room the Netgear but directly into the wall outlet, all the terminals via extension to another power supply: 36-40 Mbit / s. Then successively inserted both Netgear in the power supply line rotated by 180 °: No change. A long Ethernet cable hergekramt, the connected XAV101 also in the living room (on an empty socket), network cable to it: data rate rose to at least 80-110 Mbit / s. Beautiful! Only at least one cable is now but ugly in the room; so I do not want to use that.
Conclusion: The Netgear kit goes back! So, as I would have liked to install, I have much less data throughput than with the previous, existing WLAN connection, the S is at least between 120 and 180 Mbit /. That this set with me not working as it describe other reviews, there may in addition to the spatial conditions and to the current protection measures (FI-switch, overvoltage protection) - but this I can not disable or bypass. In the same circuit, the transmission rate is possible, after all, in a usable size. For a smooth network connection to the notes in the (quite poor) manual should also be observed without fail: No power strips use!
So hold me the only option, but to continue to combine all devices via Wi-Fi to the Internet - to lay a solid ethernet cable right into the living room would not inconsiderable (re) construction works connected, but probably the best solution. Since the devices but apparently work and do what they should (only stop when not me) I give anyway 3 stars for this product.
