Was looking for a small, handy digicam that automatically works as a snapshot camera and also provides good pictures. Due to the many good reviews and just such a review, I found the Nikon S5100. The thing is super small, light and stylish, the technical data speak for themselves, which is exactly what I was looking for. The service is really very simple and intuitive, just the trigger irritated me with a very loud clack sound. Now I was looking forward to the first images. The first impression of the images was brilliant with bright colors, but on closer look at a number of shortcomings came to light: The images were consistently yellowish, the oversaturated colors and unnatural sometimes. Such was a brick-red roof of orange, a green-brown late autumn meadow glowed in lush spring green and a Difuser gray blue sky shone in dark azure. The macro shots were unsatisfactory because very often blurred and the 140mm 5x zoom, I would have expected a bit more. My old Sony with a focal length of 35-114mm and 3x zoom brings much the same magnification. Since the calculation goes from wide angle to give results in this difference, one must not be fooled by the numbers. Positive note is the 28mm wide angle and the excellent speed of the lens. The quality of video recordings, I would only describe as average, for films with good results, the Nikon is not really suitable. As affordable entry model with very intensely colored images and easy handling, the camera may be suitable, but for more demanding it is probably out of the question. I have given them back, because I looked at unnatural images and the zoom was too weak. So I opted for a compromise and bought the Lumix ZX1 Panasonic, is somewhat larger, heavier and more expensive lot, but my needs were fulfilled.
