Address Unknown is an epistolary novel between two friends who operate a common Gallery in San Francisco. One of them decides to take his family back to Germany after the First World War. His best friend, an American Jew remains to continue to take care of the business on the spot itself.
My impression:
Address Unknown reads on the front pages, as the story of a friendship that is to be maintained over the distance suddenly.
But soon, the friendship the band that is both connects getting thinner by the influence of Nazi propaganda begins to change. From letter to letter, the two partners to remove more and more of each other.
It takes only 60 minutes to leave the listener with a very thoughtful and oppressive feeling back. For me, this audiobook was none, after I was able to immediately take the next hand. In as few words that summarized all the cruelty and coldness of this era. It shows very clearly how people have been manipulated before, and how even people who were loyal and solidarity in character, "tilt" and the power of mass connect unconditionally. Something that me - comes from a generation that knows the time only from the history books - even today, is still difficult to understand. In this book, this development is very good for Nazi accurately described.
However, what makes this novel so unique is that development takes the friendship. At the beginning of the book the friendship is as strong as they could wish for. Both meet at eye level and that is what will remain throughout the book exist. The Jew here is not primarily victims, but uses its own ways to defend against the breach of trust and betrayal to defend. That is what makes this novel a unique work.
Was published the novel by Kressmann Taylor in 1938, the author has neither then nor in front of it written or published anything. A work that then as now, has a frightening topicality.
I have read the book to find some time ago and that the voices of the speakers, who alternately speak their part depending writer, makes the story even scarier.
My conclusion: This audiobook you should listen unbedint, but you should definitely take the time aware of it, not hear it in passing.
