Some other reviews said "Bad Base" is a little below the usual level of his authorship; but this first novel seems to bring something innovative and fresh in the genre of thriller, though "Grandoria" will be hard to beat for a long time in this respect and in my opinion (too bad and absurd that we should order the latest book on Amazon.com in the US while it is written in French ...). "Bad Base" is a thriller that must definitely occupy a prominent place in its class. You can be embarrassed or destabilized by the sudden appearance in this story made reference to characters that seem clearly to have played an important role and have been fully described in previous novels of the author. On the other hand, these references arouse curiosity and encourage reading other novels in the series of Myron Bolitar written by Harlan Coben.
Speaking characters, there are a few that are truly exceptional, and this is especially the case of Win, a playboy / businessman / intellectual a little crazy and unpredictable as hilarious Big Cyndi .
I hesitate between 4 and 5 stars in this thriller, because I think the character of Thrill (Nancy) is totally superfluous, unless it should play a leading role in the following story. I also found that there are a few too many women who throw themselves on the hero, Bolitar, and the affection of the latter for his parents sometimes give the cutesy. I also find it a bit too Esperanza wonder if the author has not had a little heavy handed with the political correctness of the moment (lesbian, latino, woman in efficient work, beautiful and smart, confident in it, etc., etc.) at the expense of the plausible character she might have been.
Overall, "Bad Base" is a super thriller with all the atmosphere of mystery that is expected of this kind, and Harlan Coben is part of the great authors of thrillers. So I give it 5 ...
