Customer Review

My previous photographic career has been limited to DSLRs from Canon (for example, 7D, 5D Mark II) and Nikon (D300, D700, D800, D600 and D7100). That this all excellent cameras, I do not need to mention.

So why the change to Olympus and so the 4/3 format? What I have not cursed, D800 with Nikkor 24-70 / 2.8 and 70-200 / 4 and the Sigma II and lugging around 12-24 105 Macro on my last vacation in the mountains, the Nikon. In addition to excellent images but also back and joint pain were the result. Hence my proviso was an excellent image quality in conjunction with a small and lightweight housing for a possible change of system. Therefore, I found the Olympus OM-D E-M5 very interesting, but the disillusionment came in the photo business, because me this but was too small and I was not prepared to pay about 250 euros for the handle, only to ergonomics to improve. So then the OM-D E-M1 came on the market, which because of their technical specifications and the molded handle sparked my interest again. Here is my personal assessment of the Olympus OM-D E-M1:

Handling and operation:

· The camera is excellent in his hand, the workmanship is high quality, which in contrast to the OM-D 5 existing handle see well formed; the rubber is very slippery, so little risk that a slip the camera in hand (in combination with the wrist strap even better)
· The buttons and knobs can be well operated and have a pleasant pressure point. The locking of the mode selection wheel I think is very well done and prevents accidental adjustment during retrieval from the camera bag. Above all, one can also decide whether the lock should be active or not. Button push down, being arrested active; Button above locking inactive.
· Size and especially weight are very pleasant and unlike the heavier DSLR models (the quite well in the hand) in my case perfectly!
· The optional handgrip / battery grip makes the Olympus even better in your hand, without being too heavy to make the combination; the battery life can be extended by a second battery.
· The battery life could be my feeling for better, however, when taking into account that both the excellent electronic viewfinder, the touch-screen monitor and the built-in camera body image stabilization are very power hungry, the battery life is just ok (about 400-500 images), with long exposures using Live Time significantly less (about 100-200 photos).
· The folding screen dissolves very good, the touch screen function is very good; so are also shots from awkward angles much easier (at Nikon only by a 200-euro Winkelsucher possible), also can be focused by touch function quickly and very specifically on the screen and triggered
· The camera menu is if you do not change from Olympus OM-D itself to E-M1, a bit strange and similarly extensive as Nikon. But with some training no problem. Due to the abundance of features, the icons on the screen are unfortunately somewhat small and a little difficult for large fingers to operate.
· You can occupy almost any key on the OM-D with almost any function, I have rarely seen a camera that is so individualized. But requires a lot of time by trying out, every photographer has to his preference to be aware, then everything is almost possible.
· The electronic viewfinder's just fun! He is the viewfinders of my previous DSLR to none and will outperform it. Very highly detailed and bright, it can display a lot of setting parameters, histogram etc.. No bucking the viewfinder when panning with the camera.
· Unfortunately, only a memory card slot, but if I'm honest, no storage medium has been with me so far been adopted prematurely. Nevertheless I secure my data after every major shooting immediately.
· At a built-in flash will be without one who supplied small flash but replaces it and it does not too thick on the camera when you leaves him there. The guide number is roughly equivalent to the built-in DSLR flashes. Simply fold up and he is ready to use. In addition, you can try to control this flash more external flashes and it does not require batteries or batteries.

Picture quality and recording:

· The image quality is excellent! Good detail resolution, enlargements are very possible good color fidelity. With a little tweaking of the developed in-camera JPEGs I can practically save me the RAW development.
· The noise behavior is very good and clearly at the level of the APS-C sensors, but can not keep up with the full-frame sensors logically. Until ISO 1600 you can photograph without hesitation, to ISO 6400 are still good to use the images, higher values I have not used. More noise I correct very well with DxO Optics Pro.
· Due to the excellent image stabilizer, which is located in the camera, but higher ISO values can be made up for by an extended shutter speed or be bypassed. The only disadvantage of the image stabilizer is its volume, especially if, like me, still looking out of habit through the viewfinder and therefore the Olympus is close to the face.
· The shutter sound in turn is much quieter and more comfortable than most DSLR (the acclaimed Quiet Mode of Canon I do not know)
· The autofocus is combined with fast lenses (in my case, the 12-40 / 2.8) in both good and bad lighting conditions extremely quickly and accurately (faster and better than most DSLR), with less light and not so very fast lenses (40-150 and 75-300) If the auto focus to its limits, but is still very reliable. Here, however, the pro-DSLR (eg D800 with Nikkor 2.8) have slightly ahead. Overall, the autofocus is however excellent.
· When shooting (I'm rather rare) is the autofocus compared to the DSLR in my experience better, he quickly focuses and also leads without large pumps.
· A nice touch is the live-time function in M mode. With long exposures, you can watch the image development on the monitor and then exit the exposure depending on your taste. This has the Olympus DSLR still ahead.
· Beautiful are also the whole way filters that I have not yet so often used. Genial is the so-called. Art-bracketing function, ie a bracketing of all or only of specially selected filters.

Conclusion:

· An excellent camera, the image quality and weight is more than meets my needs. If the Olympus advertising to be believed, the Olympus OM-D E-M1 is designed to handle exceed DSLR. This she does in my view not, but it is in spite of the MFT sensor in the Bildqualitiät on par with the APS-C models and excels in terms of weight and handling the APS-C and full frame cameras. Overall, for me the camera so far the best compromise between image quality and weight, without having to make too much compromise.
· With high-speed lenses (12-40 / 2.8), the Olympus develops its whole strength even when the image quality (although the lenses also used by me 40-150 and 75-300 very well harmonize with the camera). So I'm looking forward to the announced 40-150 / 2.8.
· I have taken into account above all the functions in my review, which seem to me personally important. Due to the abundance of possibilities you could write many more pages.
· Overall, the Olympus OM-D E-M1 has earned 5 stars in my eyes, although still some air upwards exists!

PS: I have uploaded 2 photos. Have fun with it!
