Technisat TechniStar S2 digital HDTV satellite receiver (HDMI, DVRready, CI +, UPnP, Ethernet) (Electronics)

Customer Review

After I had originally decided to purchase a TechniSat TechniStar S1, this however due to a faulty batch of product (it was S1 + - instead of S1 hardware installed) have sent back, was my second choice on the slightly more expensive successor model, the TechniSat TechniStar S2. Because there is to no experience reports of this device in the network still little, I decided to submit a slightly more detailed review. When is not discussed in more detail on individual product specifications, these were in my purchase decision not in the foreground or I had until now (as of 12/2011) no opportunity to test the feature.

DELIVERY
The case of the S2 is very light, easy to handle and properly processed despite the plastic used. The included HDMI cable makes a high quality impression. The remote control keys are clearly arranged and have a good pressure point. With the "Quick Start Guide" (after about 50 pages), you can get a quick overview of the installation steps and the basic functions of the receiver. Unfortunately, the nearly 200 pages comprehensive manual is supplied on CD, which is to get over for me, however.

GETTING STARTED
The commissioning of the unit is consistently straightforward - connect cable, start power, turn on the receiver. The installation wizard guides the user safely through the Device Setup; who wants to know exactly what is happening in each step, can for a better understanding pull the Quick Start Guide for help. Tuning (ISIPRO program list update), Software Update and in particular the loading of the electronic program guide (TechniSat calls them "SFI") possibly take some time to complete. If you do not cancel or interrupt the respective operations, after about 30 to 45 minutes has an operational S2 up to date.

OPERATION (turn-on times, switching, HDMI CEC, EPG)
- The turn-on time of the power-saving mode about 22 seconds from the "power-hungry" Quick Start Mode, however, only 4-5 seconds. Because the display of my Samsung LE32C650 also needs several seconds to display a first image, the longer time interval of the preset power-saving variant is still bearable.
- The changeover to HD channels is just under 2 seconds the changeover to SD transmitter for about 1 second. A "channel surfing" would thus at best possible between SD channels, and then the generation of HDTV receivers is anyway no longer adapted.
- To switch generally it should be said that this will work properly if the remote control is not pointed directly at the receiver. This is especially useful in areas with smaller "obstacles" (eg, chair, coffee table, etc.).
- Those who want to exclusively use the TechniSat remote control for receiver and TV set, can fall back on the integrated HDMI CEC function (called by TechniSat "HDMI TechniLink"). If both this and the the TV (with my Samsung LE32C650 the "Anynet +") and the respective options for the simultaneous switching on and off are activated, the TV after a corresponding button is automatically switched on and off. For all Samsung Users The following should be noted: the Anynet + only works properly, if the "MENU" button - set the "Update in Standby" to "OFF"> Software Update -> support. Otherwise, problems sometimes occur problems in parallel off the device.
- The EPG is very functional, you easily switch the current program of all stations at a glance and can have a list of choices to the desired program. Optionally, you can press a button through the complete program of the next seven days, which updates daily morning by 4 clock automatically - a very practical and convenient function. In said EPG menu can be adjusted for the selected program also convenient timer to record or to switch to the respective stations.

Picture and sound (especially upscaling of standard definition channels)
- The main criterion par excellence for HDTV receivers is - at least for me - the picture quality. And this is at the HD channels that can be received with the S2, simply outstanding. The quality of SD channels is logically worse in comparison, but falls through the consistently decent upscaling result on my Samsung LE32C650 not significant. When selecting the HDMI resolution you can choose between the options Auto, 576i, 576p, 720p, 1080i and Native decide. One must individually try which variant the television provides the interaction the best picture result here. In my case, that was the "Auto" or with felt smaller smears "720p" - all the other options, the picture was somewhat "krisselig".
- The sound is transmitted clearly and without noise (at various Kathrein models came with me in the past an unpleasant buzzing on). A 5.1 system I do not have, so I can not make any further statements on the sound quality.

MANAGEMENT OF CHANNEL LISTS
In addition, it was extremely important for me to be able to adjust the station lists individually and easily (this had cost me by my predecessor, a Humax F3-FOX CI, some time and nerves). Our own "TV list" is created quickly and easily with the clear and well thought out menus of S2. However, those who considered about 15 minutes a waste of time and on an individual order places no value, can fall back on the automatically loaded list - all important stations are there in the first third. The only negative aspect and a bit annoying, however, is that the receiver switches to the currently selected channel when sorting in the background. Here then is best briefly the Mute key. Incidentally, when the total program list will be updated on ISIPRO who previously created his own TV-list is maintained, of course.
This holds just mutatis mutandis to the radio list. It is relatively wild jumbled, but can be easily rearranged as required or equal saved as a new list.

POSSIBILITY retrofit-HD +
Ahead I consciously decided against a receiver with permanently installed HD + hardware, since I do not really want to accept the associated restrictions and not one marriage, even paying for it. Nevertheless, it would be possible with an appropriate CI + -Zusatzmodul and a smart card, the HD + program to get into the living room. Thanks to the generally excellent image quality of the S2 (see above) can be good but it waived.

DVR
The existing DVR function for recording TV and radio programs I could not test themselves at this level, I can not call my own a correspondingly large USB stick (> 16 GB) or an external hard drive for its exclusive use at S2 , Hoping that reduce the currently increased hard drive prices in the near future, I will expand my review in due course. The only statement to the recording function, I can make at present, concerns the file system of the connected storage medium: the receiver accepts loud shooting menu only FAT32, not NTFS however.

CONCLUSION
Anyone looking for a HD-enabled satellite receiver, which is technically mature, can be operated comfortably, provides a first-class image and not tears equal to a deep hole in the purse, grabs the TechniSat TechniStar S2 - a strong buy recommendation on my part!
