This book is part of a collection that currently includes nearly thirty books on the most famous architects of the period late nineteenth century and first half of the twentieth century. Materially, the book is of good quality: soft cover and ice but lined a hundred very white paper pages with precise and contrasted printing, and with contemporary photos or time on all pages. Play starts with ten pages tracing the career of the German architect, who was Bauhaus arts school director in 1930 before emigrating to the United States during the rise of Nazism. The second part of his career as an architect is happening in the northern United States (he moved to Chicago). The body of the book describes the main constructions of Mies Van der Rohe, on two to six pages each, placing them in their geographical, historical context and in the evolution of the work of the architect. In particular an important place is given to two major works: - The German pavilion at the 1929 International Exhibition in Barcelona, demolished in 1930 (after exposure) and rebuilt in 1983, where one can find the famous furniture "Barcelona" created by the architect for the occasion. - The luxurious and modern skyscrapers in New York Seagram Building (1958), with its blinds aligned along the 3 open positions permitted (German rigor?).
At the end of the book we find a biography on four pages and two cards (America and Europe) locating the constructions. Bibliography last page. Like other books in this series, this book is a beautiful gateway into the work of the architect.
