Before that I had for the Olympus XZ-2 (upscale compact camera), which I also like very much (especially the lens with f1,8-2,5) but: The J4 is smaller and has a Sweep Panorama mode (but this lower resolution ) and it is given by the relatively large 1 inch sensor greater opportunity for highlighting - still quite limited though with the kit lens.
What I love about the J4 also like:
- The focus of Kitobjektivs I find really good. (Sure, there are more stringent, but in view of size and price, I was pleasantly surprised (see attached picture of the flower) 10:05:14 Update: Refers only to the center of the image edges significantly blurred.)
- The image stabilizer is mE. very good. I was amazed. Or I'm just better in the hand, but at the XZ-2 I have consistently blurred images at 1/10 sec. - With the J4 come out even with 1/8 still mostly usable images. (At 10 mm at least)
- Autofocus quickly and accurately
- Gadgets such as time-lapse and slow motion 3 (restrictions but here at resolution and shutter speed - so a lot of light needed)
- Continuous shooting speed to 60 frames / sec (for me rather gimmick)
- Is good for me in my hand - I think they are always left on the lens and with the right - well normal finger on the trigger. So I hardly miss even a non-slip thumb rest. Handed photograph is not advised.
What me -In the obvious inevitable as missing in size viewfinder / Klappdisplay- disturbs:
- Noise ratio of the sensor is quite far away from the APS-C or especially my D5100. In ISO 1600, it is at the J4 already partly critical and a slight noise is often seen in the RAW files with even the slightest of ISO 160. The JPEGs are denoised course, but then also in accordance with detailed poorer. But you have to think about what you need and how useful the 100% view is at 18 megapixels at all. What puts the whole, is above stabilizer, so that you in spite of modest intensity of the supplied 10-30 zoom does not have to go so fast at high ISO - assuming the subject is calm.
- Auto-ISO only to 800 or 3200, but not be limited to 1600. Why? That would be the most sensible step for me. Also, a minimum shutter speed can not be set in Auto ISO and in A mode always choosing for my taste at high shutter speeds (<1/100) at the expense of the ISO.
- PASM missing on the wheel The Nikon has indeed now seen the change from the Quick Menu, however, is still being resolved ok. (S J5.).
- Picture Control implemented annoying. If you select the Detail View menu that displays the data as an ISO and shutter, etc, you can quickly go from just this with the little wheel the images. These are then but tiny. If I then purely zoome to see the photo in the "full screen", I can not change by pressing the right or left side of the wheel to the next photo - the key at the point where nothing at all! Instead, I have to zoom out again and then to the right and then zoom in again ... What's going on, is wipe the touch screen when you are in full view. This could have been done better.
- Flash sync of max. Brighten 1/60 sec. Image (eg portrait in front of sky / Backlight) is therefore only if you close your aperture wide. Bokeh (blurred background) making it almost impossible!
- WiFi: As I see it only with the Nikon app possible, not to laptop / PC! and the connection to the mobile phone interrupts me happy and see. Comfortable Nikon app is not exactly. WLAN alone therefore only 1-2 star!
- Manual focus, whom one might normally used more in low light: the enlarged screen is totally pixelated / verrausscht - apparently the display is not so great when it is dark - there are both D5100 and Olympus XZ-2 far better!
The battery is (about 2 weeks) noticed me so far neither positive nor negative.
So overall. Well for the current price below 300 euros a fine little camera with partially unnecessary interest in the operation and only average noise performance
