Customer Review

While manufacturers offer now a large segment of different camera types and the range of mirrorless system cameras is becoming increasingly popular, but recedes not from even the boom with cameras and provides for many in terms of image quality still the ne plus ultra. As beginners can as easy to lose track. And even if you have opted for the range of DSLRs, is questionable, which manufacturer which model it will be.
Below, therefore, a review of Nikon's new entry-level DSLR, the D5300:

01 Unboxing:

Quite big is the box, his little D5300 sends in the Nikon into the race. But everything is inside but also clean packaged and easily accessible.
Following content provides the Box:
1x Camera Body D5300
1x lens Nikkor 18-55mm (or depending on which bundle you purchase)
1x Kameragurt
1x Battery
1x Charger
1x USB cable
1x Scart cable
1x CD with ViewNX2
1x User

So everything is what you as the entry braucht.tja, and then it may actually already started!

02 First impression:

Taking the Nikon from its bubble wrap, then falls first time in the comfortable size and weight. Good 480 grams brings the camera body on the scale. For me, a very pleasant weight that is definitely lower than the Canon 60D and my little above my 100D (407g). Also I feel comfortable handling the camera.
The D5300 is, in my opinion, very well in the hand. Firstly, the camera can be well packed with the right hand and the handle has an indentation that is deep enough to hold the camera securely in the hands can. Secondly, the rubber is really handy, so that even with sweaty hands threatens no camera crash. Overall, the D5300 will leave a really good first impression.

03 PROCESSING:

This impression is reinforced by the predominantly flawless workmanship of the camera. Even if the body is made of plastic, the feeling of holding a high-quality camera in hand remains.
Only the battery compartment could make a higher quality impression. At opening, it seems quite rickety. A pity that Nikon has built no spring here would have given it some more stability.
Processed Better acts against the folding 3.2-inch display snaps a clean, without being stiff.

04 HANDLING:

I have already mentioned to me is the Nikon D5300 very good in the hand. It is handy and also interferes with the arrangement of the buttons are not, if you want to put your thumbs. Overall, the Nikon can be almost entirely operated with the right hand. Only the menu button, the flash button, the FN button and a button for adjusting the recording mode (single frame, continuous, timer, etc.) is on the left side of the camera.
Overall I would say also very balanced and reconsidered.

05 OPERATION:

If you have turned on the camera for the first time and entered the date and time, you can start already!
I must say that for me the menu of the Nikon was able to get a great change, but it differs significantly from my previously used Canon cameras. But, no problem, the person can get used to yes.

Let's start with the normal recording menu that you have in mind for every shot.
In the upper left corner of the program to see which is currently set on the dial.
Among these are the parameters for shutter speed, aperture and ISO speed chosen.
Again, under it there is the indication of the measurement field and the selected operating mode (single frame, continuous, etc.) Finally, decorate the bottom third of the screen parameters such as image quality, white balance, flash mode, AF point selection, exposure compensation and Co.
Pretty packed, but all good in view. What I'm wondering why was packed twice a ISO view in this menu they appear in the top third and the bottom again.

So much for the display, we come to your camera's internal menu which can be made more things like playback options, white balance, Custom Functions, System properties and other settings. Again, a little bit extra, but arranged for the most part clear. So you can select the menu tab to the left as playback, recording, Custom Setting, System, Image Processing and Display settings.
If you choose one of these points, to further fine-tuning can make when it comes to eg image quality, white balance and co. Selecting the individual points can be comfortable with the directional pad of the camera on the back. Compensates structurally my Canon and I have found myself therefore quickly master.
A pity I think that Nikon has no integrated touch screen, get when the D5300 donated already no thumbwheel has had this operation even easier and you would have to jump from one menu item to the next quickly.

As for the availability or the arrangement of the buttons on the camera, I must say that I have done me hard, find your way around quickly. While the buttons are all easily accessible, but created completely for me, contrary to my habits. Although a matter of taste but it took me some time to know which button I can do what. So I would have thought an ISO button for more meaningful than an info button on the top, this could just as well be left out, as on the back of the camera once again a button i (information) is, for example, in Live View almost the same parameters fades as the button. But as I said, is certainly a matter of taste and I recommend anyone who is faced with a purchase decision, to take the camera times in the hand and compare with other operating concepts usually gut feeling is right. You can get used to but the other operation guidance. What I like good, is the small toggle switch next to the Menüwahlrad, which allows you to switch to Live View quickly and easily or to Wi-Fi.

06 control panel and viewfinder:

The display I have already mentioned and also that I am pleased that Nikon has built a folding screen. As I said, touch screen would have been nice addition, but anyway you can not have everything. What you may have but is a neat bright and high-resolution display. The images are displayed sharply and clearly and the display will read even reasonably well even in direct sunlight.
The viewfinder is bright enough for me and I can see well in low-light situations, the objects in front of the lens. Here you'll find nothing to complain about for me!

07 AF and focus areas:

What pleasantly surprised me Nikon D5300 equips with rich 39! Focus points from which I can only dream of in my two Canon cameras. Can quickly switch between the individual measuring fields back and forth by directional pad, which has a very pleasant work result. However, it should be noted that only the middle 9 cross-type sensors are measuring fields is again a pity, especially when you have to work in very difficult lighting conditions. For it is on the outside, it can occasionally lead to pumping of the AFS and you have to wait a little longer.
The AF in itself is quite good and is fast in most shooting situations for. Although he could work a little draughty but I usually always hold fast no sports or fast movements in Live View, which is acceptable for me.
A bit annoying, however, is the rather long waiting period when an image was shot in Live View and it will come to display on the screen. Since the D5300 could even set a small tooth. But as I said, just all depends on what you want to photograph.

08 image quality and KITLINSE:

I must say, in terms of image quality and sharpness of the small kit lens, I am pleasantly surprised! The images were very sharp at all to me and showed little reason to complain. If one looks closely, but it must be said that the kit lens tends to slightly vignetting. Every now and then but a very fitting effect, or it can also be removed easily.
In addition, the Kitlinse is really well made and makes a high impression. The ring for focal adjustment is easy to grip and the lens can be manually focused well. Something I had to change when adjusting the focal length (see above on the left is greater focal length with 55mm and right of the wide-angle). Is exactly the opposite with my other lenses used. But again, no big deal.
What I do feel a bit of a joke, is the rear lens cover, which was delivered to me. Was basically just a white plastic cap that has pushed it somehow on bayonet. No idea if this was now only the case with me, or whether the generally cover on Nikkor lenses are Nikon if so sorry, but that's really better for the price!

09 color rendition and white balance:

Let that I see a chapter, a bit as a weak point of the D5300. Shooting in sunlight or on the day, then know the colors to convince. Although stronger than my Canon (I have subsequently some saturation at the Nikon taken out), but by no means greatly exaggerated. Also, the white balance in daylight makes a very good figure and is 85-90% accurate, even if the auto white balance is set (AWB). If the light is but a little darker or you are dealing with lamps etc., the white balance skin sometimes quite wrong. So artificial lighting situations interact with the Nikon unfortunately always a bit greenish. Can be corrected internally and move next to other white balance situations also by swatch towards hot or cold? Yes, I thought so too but unfortunately does not work. Suppose I set the white balance to Tungsten and correct it additionally towards red / yellow, then the picture does not appear much different than if I had not made this setting. White backgrounds appear unfortunately still greenish, rather than in warm white.
No, really, the D5300 there with me not score!

10 ISO speed rating:

To 12,800 (or expanded to 25,600), the camera can turn up.
Images up to ISO 3,200 can be implemented easily with the D5300 and the existing noise here can be well out count (either internally or externally by noise suppression with the right program). Higher but I would go in very rare cases and then still more likely to recommend a tripod.

11 numerous adjustment options:

But what is then really great, the different effect and Scene are programs that bring the Nikon and the Canon cameras are lagging behind my two.
On the one hand you can choose at the effects of the following parameters:

Night Vision
Color drawing
Toy Effect
Miniature Effect
Selective Color
Silhouette
HighKey and LowKey and
HDR Painting

Sure, most gizmos, but at least some.
In the Scene settings there are also some choices:

Food
Autumn colors
Flowers
Candlelight
Animals
Twilight
Sunset
Beach / snow
Indoors
Night Portrait
Night Scene

I tested dusk, Indoors and snow and have to say that I have quite enjoyed the results and have complied with the lighting conditions.

What I particularly like the ability to internally create HDR images (the adjustment is located in the menu under the Recording tab. Although I hate this ultra-soft flushed HDR images that simply look like eye cancer not by photography but rather, but can luckily the intensity in the camera rules, so really good recording come out of it (the camera takes in quick succession two shots and merges them). What's annoying you have to adjust this effect for each shot individually, as it automatically adjusts itself to the OFF position, once the record is in the box.

12 WI-FI and GPS:

For the first time installed Nikon has to dock a GPS receiver and the possibility via Wi-Fi to a device (eg smartphone).
The short test use of GPS has worked quite well after the camera at last had a signal. Is it so much on the go, you can so easily provide his images with spatial data and always knows exactly where it was.

As for the Wi-Fi should not be blinded you look. That's my illusion than reality. Because the D5300 can not log into the home Wi-Fi network and you can share photos with your PC, but the Wi-Fi interface is currently only used to be able to control the camera using a smartphone and the Nikon Wireless Mobile App Utility (what exactly is to be triggered by camera phone that was it but also already!)

13 CONCLUSION:
Overall, a good entry-level camera that provides a lot of settings, brings a good kit lens with and from the picture quality not have to hide. Nevertheless minor weaknesses on the camera have been found during the test. Thus, one should not be too much of wifi expect the operating system takes some acclimatization period and the white balance is in need of improvement for me. If you can live with these weaknesses, which gets to the D5300 but a solid partner who can capture the beautiful moments of life certainly satisfactory!
