Netgear offers a wide range of hardware, very good quality and at reasonable price.
Small ProSafe have the following marking:
Type switch - Declination - Number of ports - Options.
For example, "GS105E".
Type:
GS - Gigabit Switch (Supports speeds 1000, 100 and 10 megabits / sec)
FS - Fast Switch (Supports 100 and 10 mega-bit speed / sec)
Number of ports:
05 - this is the minimum (up to 52)
Options:
E - "Plus" version. Can be configured (level 2, ie without routing) through a special application under Windows (note: no web management). VLAN support (up to 5 tags), QoS, Port Mirroring, etc.
T - Version "Smart". The "real" eatable level 2 switch through its Web interface. In addition to opportunities for "E" support number of tags "unlimited", Availability, Multicast, SNMP, IGMP,
P - PoE. Possibility to power your devices through the same cable as the data (provided they are compatible PoE).
S - Stackable. Possibility of specific interconnecting multiple switches.
Summary:
If you just need a switch "works" without taking your head, buy in the range "GS105", choosing the appropriate number of ports and preferring the modeling "Green" (who can save energy by cutting off unused ports).
If you need VLAN, QoS, etc. take either the "E" (GS105E) or the "T" (GS105T). The "E" is still much more limited than the "T": No Web interface, up to 5 tags, impossible to define management network (still # 1), etc. As against the "T" does not exist in Version 5 ports.
Take the "P" option if you have compatible devices "PoE" (usually cameras) to prevent the 220V wiring.
