Great introduction to the world of SLR cameras

Nikon D5100 SLR Digital Camera (16 Megapixel, 7.5 cm (3 inches) swiveled and rotated monitor, Live View, Full HD video function) housing (electronics)

Customer Review

The day before yesterday it finally happened, my new Nikon D5100 was there! The anticipation was of course very large. I am a beginner in the field of SLR cameras, but I had already many ways to occupy myself with the matter and was therefore not entirely ignorant of the whole thing started. I myself seek advice and a lot of it filtered and weighed for me by various dealers and experts.

When you enter the SLR world, there are some important fundamental questions that should be clarified for himself in advance with certainty!

eg What is important to me?
- Image Quality?
- Multimedia functions?
- Easy handling?
- Complex service?
- Video Quality?
- Connections?
etc. etc. etc.

There are some pros and cons that you should consider, because in the end there is usually anyway never the "perfect" solution! ;)

But now the D5100 and my first impressions and experiences:

External appearance and feel:

The first impression is a good one, at least for me. I could well imagine that anyone could get with big hands but problems. Since this is not the case for me, it's perfect for me. With dimensions of 128 x 97 x 79mm it fits perfectly in a camera bag, with enough space for accessories is available. A compact camera-transfer passengers, the weight comparatively happen much of 560 grams, but the D5100 is a lightweight in the SLR camera class. Weigh Many SLR cameras Locke double or even three times as much as the D5100.

Although Otherwise, virtually all plastic, as regards the housing, but very high quality and in my opinion also very robust.

In many higher-priced models, I noticed that this still had a display at the top of the camera, where some information about the current settings were. This display is missing here. However, do not bother me particularly, because I, as a beginner would probably pay anyway less it.

The switches and buttons arrangement I find great success! Many emergency settings and pre-defined modes can be adapted immediately. For beginners this preselection is really worth gold, as many keys have been designed compact camera similar and therefore ease the transition a lot. However, the opportunity to make completely manual settings also exist, which is of course essential for the advanced users.

The bottom line for the case thus falls out very well. I prefer only one point off for the difficult operation of the D5100, in people with larger hands. This is simply a solidarity deduction point and falls with me now not so much weight because I do not belong to the blade hand category ...;) In summary, as a 4 * for the housing and the control layout.

Features:

What a course becomes immediately apparent is the vari-angle 3 "display! With 921,000 points, it is sharp and makes otherwise a very qualitative and robust. With this display it is also possible in the Photos / Videos Live View mode resume are in hard to reach places where you can not look through the optical viewfinder. eg when shooting overhead this possibility is extremely helpful! Even if the display is super successful, I'm still a human being who would rather use the optical viewfinder and Live View mode only when filming or "if there is no alternative" uses;.)
All in all, the display but very well done and shows a very high resolution.

As described above, before there are many pre-programmed choices in the scene modes. 16 in number. As I said, an insanely useful and probably the most used option ... for expert or experts rather unsuitable for beginners, or unnecessary. However, the D5100 also offers the ability to manually adjust various things themselves, which the experts also are no limits to his creativity.

Very much I love the HDR (High Dynamic Range) images, in which the camera takes 2 different images of a subject, one above and the other is underexposed. After the images are combined into one image. This is produced in high-contrast scenes incredible momentum, ensuring that the picture even more realistic effect than with only one exposure. A great opportunity with which I was able to achieve good results already surprisingly early as 1 day.

In addition, there are also many other settings option such as "Active D-Lighting". The shadow areas are brightened, resulting in even more detailed. Otherwise, there are a whole series of different focus settings for a variety of cases.

The D5100 provides an image resolution of 16.2 MP, putting it in the D7000, the next higher model. This can work ...;)

In addition to outstanding image quality, the camera offers to retouch functions. Either one uses the effects that you can also select the Live View mode, including miniature effect, selective color, image drawing, Fisheyeeffekt etc., or one takes before other picture changes, for example, remove red eye, cropping, perspective correction and much more.

Another great feature the D5100 features a video mode of movies in Full HD recording. I did of course equal times tried and made a short movies and then placed on my Full HD TV with an HDMI cable. The quality is really great! The only thing that seemed a bit sluggish, the automatic autofocus. One notices the automatic Nachfokusierung always something annoying pumping effects of the camera, but I think for easy home use bearable. All in all, I find the video very well done and because of Full HD also razor sharp!

There are certainly a number of options, features and other gimmicks that I could mention here ... The General is anyway either on the manufacturer's website or on several other dealers websites. However, like most Rezensierenden here, I can not and would anyway only give my personal impressions, the highlight in my opinion this camera.

All in all, the features in this price range and unbeatable offers you a lot of options. Above all, the simplicity for beginners, but also the flexibility for experts is here decisive for my vote. That means I can not * to award different from here with a clear conscience 5.

Now for Bildqualtität:

Now I dedicate myself to the most important criterion of the D5100. Rightly this point is crucial and essential for most. Just transfer passengers and newcomers in the SLR camera class expect a lot in this area. First, I can say that you will definitely not be disappointed with the D5100 times here! ;)

As described in the upper parts of the review, the D5100 features a 16MP sensor and made possible by ever high resolution and sharp images. The automatic setting here do a great service and is designed for quick shots in the appropriate situation, highly recommended, since the automatic functions of the white balance and ISO settings are pre-programmed or the situation adjusts accordingly autonomously.

Particularly with regard to the ISO value of the camera, it provides sensational results. I'm not the absolute expert, but I have time I already can get an insight on in advance and try to other SLR cameras, as different ISO values in a variety of lighting conditions react and what they actually mean. From this experience and quality comparisons with other cameras, I noticed that the D5100 achieved just in the upper ISO range insanely good image results. Other cameras begin in the high areas, from 3200 already with a strong rushing to. Some more, some less. In the D5100, however, results were even in these high areas yet super in it, even to 6400! Although of course also captures the D5100 sometime with noise, but the images are still to use and acceptable. In good to medium bright light you should always move in the range of ISO 100 to 800, since the best results are achieved.

The loss of detail already described in some at higher ISO values, due to the noise reduction filter is not so pleased with me the weight, and I have not noticed that. Maybe I'm simply too little expert or have just played around too little ...;) I think that a beginner or amateur will not be noticed anyway, because the images are mostly anyway intended for private home use and not for professional glossy print media. To put it in a nutshell, the D5100 is ranked in image quality in a league, are placed in the often much more expensive SLR cameras. That's why I can not do otherwise, 5 * to give as the D5100 here. A 16MP resolution and extremely low noise even at high ISO areas, are the decisive point for this top rating for me.

For the target group of the amateur or even some advanced photographer, I would classify the D5100 in the upper part because they do not need to fear comparison with far more expensive cameras in SLR range.

My Lens:

Since I bought the camera at KIT, I have carried out all the tests with the supplied lens to Nikon, ie with the "'Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G VR". For starters and beginners definitely only once adequate, but you should still consider to pick a lens with a longer focal length, if you can not possibly have this before. A good 55-300mm, for example, the "Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 55-300mm 1: 4,5-5,6G ED VR," I'd recommend here as I've seen in the D7000 even as a test in use and it has this very confident.

For special images, such as better macro or ultra-wide-angle shots, then you have to keep anyway for other lenses out and evaluate how the claims and whether the investment is worthwhile, as there already is a lot more needs to reach into his pocket.

Nevertheless, for my kit with the 18-55mm lens I would forgive * good 4 1/2, since the lens does what it should and is perfectly adequate for normal use and really great pictures come into existence. However, I will definitely get me in the near future another lens with longer focal length, so that I can meet my needs in the longer zoom range. The kit with the 18-105mm is here, however, already able to achieve better results than my 18-55mm.

My Conclusion:

When it comes to housing, facilities and image quality, the D5100 beats almost all other SLR cameras beginners in this field. For beginners, but also a bit more ambitious Intermediate, the D5100 is an absolutely good choice. The beginner enjoys the many automatic modes and effect settings that will bring a lot of joy and immediately applicable without great knowledge, whereby the absolute expert or professional probably somewhat missing the flexibility offered by other professional cameras, and possibly one or the other Fast access key, which are present in most professional cameras. The camera has a very pleasant weight and is not a typical SLR Klotz, which "facilitate" the transition from the compact camera. Solely the somewhat cumbersome operation for people with larger hands is somewhat impractical, but that's just a side note. Otherwise, the camera stands out with its excellent image quality, in combination with the extremely low noise and the very simple and straightforward operation.

So I can express an absolute buy recommendation with a clear conscience, because the camera is one in her class to the absolute top class and fun is guaranteed! In the smallest KIT (like mine) with the 18-55mm lens, but it is necessary to pick up probably another extra lens to tickle the full power out of the camera. However, the 18-55mm is sufficient only once as a transition to start from perfect.

From these all these reasons, I can live without * Problems with the award of 5. The smaller deductions that I have mentioned in the Rezenssion fall as less important and justify my opinion no penalty. A professional would certainly I think can pull one or the other point more, but we must also see what the camera was designed, or what is the target audience.

I say at the end again with conviction: "Every beginner, amateur, or even one or the other advanced, making the purchase of the Nikon D5100 definitely no mistake Those looking for ease of use and great image quality, will not be disappointed here!"

Thanks for reading and take a lot of fun ... :-)
