First:
That neither Objektivtasche still sun visor were included in the box, had nothing to do with the fact that I got the lens on a boyfriend from Hong Kong who got the Nikkor lens there with a little negotiating skills for the equivalent of 230 euros ... is On Orders on Amazon as well (annoying). For this to be paid 400 euros which is indeed a little audacity, but it no longer surprises me.
CONSTRUCTION / haptics:
One reason to want to take the 18-105er distance was the plastic bayonet, from the already multiple fractures were reported. Now this danger I wanted to evacuate through the purchase of 18-140er travel lens in the word go aus'm way it finally did so a metal bayonet. The latter also sits firmly on the body of the D7100 .... minimal, the lens does, however, move it, even if it is unlikely to be of practical relevance. Size and weight Technically, the 18-140er in the middle between the 18-105er and settle the 18-200er.
The zoom of 18-140ers is pleasantly light and can be felt in how the outgoing tube something like felt or so slides ..... A distance scale (and of course an aperture ring, but that was clear) lacks what in 1% the / MY situations can be annoying to hire.
The "faintness" was to be expected for such a zoom ... leads me not to point deduction .... for the stabilizer works namely good (whatever "good" now a reader convey likes: D But can not "recovered" aperture steps 'm feeling specify out).
Although there was a lot of discussion in another reviewer's comments: my practice to can in A mode simply nachgreifen by hand and thus has the choice between genuine "M" and "A / M", although the latter only as "A" is characterized (also from the [Chinese / English] manual you will not in this respect clever). I feel in any case no unruly resistance when manually correct while "A" ......
IMAGE QUALITY:
The imaging performance I still find (though not laboratory-scale) compare over the entire focal length range of time averaged slightly better than the 18-105er and significantly better than the 18-200er. Resolution is very good even at full aperture, rum with F7 consistently good from 18 to 140mm and minimal to noticeably better. Vignette is already visible in the extreme wide-angle and telephoto, while the chromatic aberrations (CAs) are fairly weak, and even especially noticeable at the extreme focal lengths.
Regarding comparison mit'm 18-200er: had specially times taken with this lens before buying the 18-140ers images with 200 and 140mm focal length and was surprised at how little the mind. So rather a smaller, lighter, cheaper, better imaging 18-140er than they intend to adhere with all his might to the 200mm (for explicit wildlife viewing I take anyway the great Tamron 70-300 VC).
Fixed focal length of course you can not compare with the 18-140er, and also the 16-85er is certainly a small but not very relevant for me little bit better, so with respect to distortion, CAs, sharpness, build quality and effective 3mm KB more wide-angle of course.
And the minimum focus distance of 18-140ers also allows more usable emergency close-ups, even if it obviously does not deserve the title of "macro") Also, the Bokeh is "better than expected", so for such a trip Zoom / Always plan still producible ... although (not surprisingly) a weng uneasy compared to fixed focal length lenses.
A very good test of 18-140ers (and if necessary also a comparison with the 18-105er and 18-200er) It should be found on dxomark.com. Can so far only confirmed the results. Unfortunately there also complained strong distortion, especially at wide angle.
(UPDATE: this paragraph is no longer true!) Well I have now finally started, in addition to taking pictures to JPEG in RAW, but it is very annoying that after half a year of Nikon still no automatic distortion correction for the 18-140er exists which would probably definitely enrich the JPEG shooting very (incidentally, also is not on the D7100 firmware that is in fact at me the latest). The Nikon support wrote me today this only "(...) In the list of supported lenses is indeed the 18-140mm lens unfortunately not present and is not supported (yet). When this will happen, can I unfortunately do not currently report. (...) ". That's really hard after such a long time, and especially since the 18-140er is indeed also offered as Kitlinse to D5XXXern .... a model that will surely earn more than 80% only JPEG users. Here Nikon has unfortunately lost part of his merits for 18-140er.
PROS:
+ Image quality: 18-140> = 18-105er> 18-200er
+ Metal bayonet
+ Minimum focusing distance
+ Compromise size / weight picture quality / focal length range
+ Manual intervention in the A mode (I think ...)
CONS:
- No automatic distortion correction (- !!> fixed now)
- Strong distortion in wide angle, vignetting in the WW & Tele (the latter but as part of a travel zoom!)
- Price is 400 Euro reasonably ok (MSRP of about 600 Euro but not)
- No sun visor / case for the Price
- No distance scale
- Something little Tele (eg who should be a Sigma 18-250er usual)
SUPPLEMENTARY 08/03/2014:
Particle enters the lens system inside ... Well, just do not dustproof .... - After about 1200 outdoor shots with the lens are then but several small and a larger (dust?)
