Positives:
- Makes a strong impression thanks to the good and clean processed sheet metal housing.
- Very powerful (with the corresponding components).
- Very quiet during normal operation (Internet surfing, view video).
- Small
Negatives:
- Only 2 out of 8 USB ports are USB 3.0, and unfortunately only at the back.
- The blue power LED is a little too bright in the dark, they seemed a bit disturbing.
My equipment components:
- CPU: * Intel Core i7-4790S Low Power LGA1150 (3.2 GHz, 4.0 GHz Turbo, 4 cores, 8 threads, 8MB L3 cache, 65W)
- RAM: Kingston KVR16S11K2 / 16 memory 16GB (1600MHz, PC3-12800, CL11, 2x 8GB) DDR3 SO-DIMM
- SSD: Samsung MZ-M5E120BW 850 EVO internal SSD 120GB (mSATA)
- Wi-Fi: Wireless Kit for Shuttle slim PC series
When CPU and RAM I've followed the recommended components of the compatibility list of the Shuttle website. In the SSD I've taken one of Samsung, because I have had good experiences with Samsung SSD's the 850er series. The shuttle wireless kit I can not recommend. It transmits only on 2.4 GHz and brings me only one connection to 144mbit instead of 300Mbit materialize, although the router is only 2m away. Since doing a cheaper USB WLAN stick better job.
*) With the CPU I have the boxed version (with CPU fan) taken since the tray version (without CPU fan) Amazon was more expensive. The included in the boxed version CPU cooler is not required (would have no place in the housing).
Installation:
The installation of the components is quite easy. The case was with 2 screws easy to open. Then still had to be resolved in order to reach the CPU cooler which is mounted with 4 screws, the holder for the 2.5 "disk with 1 screw. The onset of CPU, RAM, WLAN and SSD was expected to also simple. Matching Thermal Conductivity paste for the CPU is supplied with the PC. The installation of 2 WLAN antennas the optional wireless kit designed to be a slightly longer fumbling.
Volume 2 of the built-in fan:
The PC is in normal operation (surf internet, watch movies) very quiet (my cat is purring loudly). 3D games (eg Need for Speed - Hot Pursuit 2010) the 2 fans are a little faster, but they are still not overly loud. When H.264 Encoding of video recordings the CPU is required right at 100% duty cycle and the fan switch off about 85-90 ° C core temperature to full power, which they are very loud. But the PC is not used for encoding of videos with me, for that I have my big PC.
The operating system I chose for Windows7 64bit, with the SHUTTLE also runs very well. The installation was carried out via a USB stick. The driver installation proved very easy with the supplied driver CD. This CD should be copied in advance but also on a USB flash drive, provided that you have an external CD / DVD drive.
Benchmark Results (Intel Core i7-4790S with Intel HD Graphics 4600 at 1280x720):
PassMark Performance Test 8.0: 3461 points (CPU: 10087, 2D: 911 3D: 792, RAM: 2570 HDD: 4704)
3D Mark 2013 1.5.884: 793 points (Ice Storm: 69139, Cloud Gate: 8060, Sky Diver: 3642, Fire Strike: 793)
So far I'm very pleased with the SHUTTLE SPC DS87. For my needs, the perfect mini-PC.
