Great phone with annoying weaknesses in OS

Nokia Lumia 1020 smartphone (11.8 cm (4.5 inches) Pure Motion HD + OLED touchscreen with ClearBlack technology, 41 Megapixel, 32 GB, Windows Phone 8) Black (Wireless Phone)

Customer Review

[EDIT] Hi, in early April the new operating system Windows Phone 8.1 was presented to the MS BUILD. Many, very many problems that still exist today stand at Windows Phone, then softened or dissolved. I personally like WP8.1 quite well (despite the fact that Cortana is much to be late to Europe). However WP8.1 will still take months until it is available for 1020. First, as the Lumia 930 will come on the market that already WP8.1 has installed approximately in June. I first had the idea to incorporate the already known me improvements in the below review. But on the one hand is WP8.1 not yet available for 1020 and the second the review is very confusing. Therefore: As long as the 1020 is still running on WP8.0 GDR3, the review still applies. Then when WP8.1 is published for the 1020, you can ignore your review below.
[EDIT END]

I am an old Nokianer. And a former Symbianer. My 808 I have loved. I approached with great openness to the 1020 and on Windows Phone. Knowing that going into compromising WP. This review covers both topics that only relate to the device 1020 (eg, hardware) as well as issues affecting the mobile operating system. The main target group of my review would therefore users who have little to no experience with WP phones. For a purchase of 1020 happens to be equivalent to a purchase of the operating system Windows Phone.

First, everything that pleases me well:

BENEFITS
The following functions do not exist so or worse in Android phones:
- The camera :-) Everything about the camera is great. The OIS. The camera software.
- Pretty much everything is on Nokia software on board: Nokia Here (Offline Maps), Nokia Drive, Nokia Mix Radio.
- The 1020 is stable
- Glance (ie information on the Sleeping screen - that's different than the lockscreen)
- Children's corner (hedged use)
- WP-Design Ehrlich: against all other Windows Phone mobile OS act as software from the Stone Age
- SkyDrive integration If you like the cloud, SkyDrive will love.
These are all real nice features and properties. These functions are innovative and productive. The children's corner ... I wish something like this to me already since years!

NEUTRAL
The following functions should end mobile phone of course, be at a high:
- Surfing / browser top! However, do not use Internet Explorer! But with the UC Browser. The offers everything you could want. Alternatively, there is also Chrome available, but UC Browser is better. Tabs, downloads, syncing, differentiated history, shortcuts, bookmarks, night mode, Forward / Back, anonymous surfing, scrollbar.
- Homescreen design the tiles can be quite handy and I built an informative and attractive homescreen. However, I would like the animation of some tiles abschalten- partly annoys
- Performance is super
- AMOLED display is great
- Most of the standard software is available: Amazon Kindl, Freda, Whats App, Endomondo and so on. There are still a few gaps; but as for the standard apps you need to worry any more at WP.
- Nokia Refocus: extremely amazing for everyday life but useless. Too much storage capacity, special photo format. When moving objects rather useless.
- Fingerprints are really not an issue in 1020. Because one does not see. :-)
- Speaker is OK
- Compelling set up a Microsoft Live account
[Edit] In the meantime, you can use any other e-mail account as the basis of the live account. I have used, for example, in one case, a web.de account as the primary alias of the live account. In other words: If you log technically still at live-service; but you can tell them almost nothing more. Very convenient.
- Battery life is OK.

Unfortunately there are also some disadvantages:

- The specific format of the headset connector reduces the availability of good headsets. While you can listen to music at all headsets, but the control will only work when the right plug. And should not now say that there is indeed adapter. This makes the mobile phone only bulky and ugly.
[Edit] it is with Android, depending on requirements also not easy to find the right headset .... you o you, at this point, Apple customers at an advantage

- No SD-Slot. I have the most important offline maps it, 4 feature films, a lot of music, my photo library and 50 apps ... and am at about 32GB. To be on the safe side, we therefore have to take the expensive 64GB version.

- Volume can not be adjusted really quiet. Even 1 is in many situations still too loud.

- No File Manager, so no independent sort, move, copy files. Especially not the way to open a file manager each type of file system zugehörendem program

- Local synchronization is a cramp. Alone I could write about three pages. The software "Windows Phone desktop application" is functionally limited, slow and tend dangerous. The software fumbles as to the owners of the folder on your PC around. ebooks synchronize locally is almost not at all. Freda can partially cooperate with Calibre.
WP-trailers respond typically, the problem would not WP, but the users who might not be of this old-fashioned habits. One should do everything via the cloud.

- Fewer games and often delayed

- No full-fledged task manager (closing apps, true multitasking, prioritizing,)
But there are a few apps that can work in the background already (music player, for example)
[Edit] done with GDR3

- No sound in their own alarm clock, SMS, email, etc.
[Edit] done with GDR3

(To be transferred must first awkward) no free choice in audio files when setting the system sounds -
[Edit] done with GDR3

- No (volume level) profiles; especially not timed profiles

- No News Center

- No direct access to system settings (currently only shortcuts); the state representation of the Live Tiles for the system settings is not perfect
[Edit] with GDR3 Shortcuts can be copied, click System Preferences in the application folder

- No original Flash

- No notification light

- Equalizer only when wired headphones are connected

- No stop button (empty the queue with stop music) in the player, even primitive default player. The alternatives are partially better, but it lacks a lot. There is no fade out, no crossfading, no skins, no forward or rewind on the time bar, no recurrence within the tracks, no editing of metadata. Playlists can be edited only extremely cumbersome. There are few statistics, no Preview tracks.

- Poor management of email attachments as well as the e-mail itself

- No local backup option; no backup via WLAN
[Edit] with GDR3 significantly improved access to the WLAN

- Calendar: Week view the default calendar is missing. The alternatives come with linked Google calendars not well understood (private appointments, reminders ...). The Live Tiles (ie "widgets") for the calendar can hardly what. Exchange support is limited; Appointments can be registered for only a few months (one year never booked a holiday in advance?). Appointment properties limited (not even attachments). Calendar Search restricted.

- Screen lock can not be deactivated (max. 5 min adjustable)

- Lighting duration can not be set

- Lighting of the home screens, buttons and Back Bingbuttons not be switched off

- Vibration of the WP-buttons can not be deactivated
[Edit] done, see comments

- The phone set is capable of improvement.

- No folders for Tiles
[Edit] done with GDR3

- No real photo management; no tagging of photos
[Edit] By means of multiple selection you can delete photos or copy to Skydrive.

- No time via Internet

- Coordination of ring volume and vibrate is limited; direct switching partially impossible

- Zoom not as consistently implemented as in Android (no zoom in Calendar and in many other apps do not)

- No printing via Wi-Fi

- No processing of outgoing mail when you answer

- No USB Host (Connect USB Sticks)

- No USB-OTG (connect USB accessories)

- Volume control only over the keys, not onscreen

- Group management of the contacts with rudimentary. Max 20 group members (school classes are larger)

- No transfer of birthdays from the contacts in the calendar
[Edit] you can get your data but transferred to Microsft live in the cloud and then synchronize with the calendar

- HDR photos only indirectly

- No Bluetooth exchange of any files
[Edit] Bluetooth-sharing system known each other files goes! see comments
[Edit] improvements GDR3 - I have not tried yet

- No Bluetooth keybord or mouse

- Incomplete support the Bluetooth protocols
[Edit] done with GDR3: Bluetooth specification 3.0
Supported Bluetooth profiles: Object Push (OPP) 1.1, Handsfree (HFP) 1.5, Advanced Audio Distribution (A2DP) 1.2, Audio / Video Remote Control (AVRCP) 1.4, Phone Book Access (PBAP) 1.1
Printing via Bluetooth is not working.

- Insufficient night mode (darkening ...)

- No HDMI port

That's what I've noticed so after two weeks in use about. My impression is that I would even stumble in the daily use from time to time about missing features.

CONCLUSION
The 1020 as a unit is a truly beautiful mobile phone. 5 of 5 points.

But the 1020 is only available in conjunction with Windows Phone. And for that I forgive As of today, only 3.5 out of 5.

In average yields that then 4 out of 5 points. In January comes a very big update for Windows Phone. Maybe a miracle will happen and things will get better.
