Subject to change not excluded!

For a few days I have the Sony KDL-48W605B now here and would like to make an initial assessment. Here I raise do not claim to have everything and fully tested.

1. Equipment (overview of selected features)
Screen size: 48 '' / 121 cm
Refresh rate: 240 Hz (Motionflow XR), LT Sony site (40 '' / 200 Hz; 60 '' / 480 Hz).
Backlight: Edge-lit
Panel natively: 50 Hz
Panel: IPS (I suspect, but since non-sensitive and good side view stability, a support person told me it would also partially obstructed VA panels, depending on what is currently available!)
Energy Efficiency: A ++
Konektivität: DVB-T / C / S / S2, 4x HDMI (lt. Sony MHL and PC compatible, 1x incl ARC.), 2x USB, LAN / W-LAN (WiFi), Smart TV

2. Delivery / packaging
Depending on in which merchants to buy some ship already by freight carrier, but the majority probably by parcel service. In my case the TV via DHL came as bulky.
The package is really big (ca. 138x73x13 cm), a stout cardboard. The TV puts on all four sides in such a way hard-bubble. Looks at first glance not so reassuring from as Styrofoam, but seems to fulfill its purpose perfectly (and is probably more environmentally friendly). Since nothing wobbled when carrying or so; Sony is there already know what they are doing! In addition, these free Styrofoam packaging has the advantage that not all isolated these Styrofoam beads laying around, or through static cling somewhere. In addition to the center of the screen nor a location sturdy cardboard folded so that the display is really well protected.
Unplugging the TV is perhaps better done in pairs, for safety reasons. But it also DEHT alone when lining up something sent, partly because of the TV with only 10 kg is amazingly light.

3. Installation
An illustrated Quick Start Guide shows how you assembled the one-piece base. Attention, the two needed to screws stuck with me in a small sachet turn on the bag in which was the base. I've searched the wolf, because I see this, or had forgotten! Otherwise, the installation is really super easy with just two screws, and on top of the static Eigenscshaften are also surprisingly good.

4. Commissioning
When you first turn it is passed through an installation menu. If you connect a satellite receiver, it has here easily, because the selection of the top box is not initially available at the moment. Only when you go in the satellite search to omit one arrives at some point to select the cable box. Test way I once connected my cable (but usually I use a twin receiver with HDD recorder). One must then choose between cable Germany, Unity Media, or otherwise. But no matter what you choose, you do not have the ability to search, for example, only free to air channels. Ie depending on the choice you get either placed the entire encrypted private HD channels on the top places, or you can get at least all the Sky, among others with Pay-TV channels in the channel list written. (Read more equal under Selected Functions -> cable TV via the built-top box.)

5. Image / Panel
At last ... The image is from the start very well. If I remember correctly, the profile standard was pre-selected, which one in principle, if one has no desire to deal with the many picture options, actually be so easy and can be satisfied! Only the Dynamic Noise Reduction I might make from Auto to Off, otherwise there are sometimes comical image effects (more on that), and the color scale back a bit.
Those who want to still continue to deal with the image optimization, will find a wealth of meaningful functions whose names do not tap into an ever immediately. To help you is a but appears a short sentence as an explanation for each function.
The picture is really sharp stabbing (in HD / Full HD), the colors are fresh and natural (* see detailed note equal). The contrast is great, the black level is impressive (especially for an IPS panel). According to Sony, it concerns with the backlight to a Edge-lit. But features such as black level correction and I do not know what still seem for techniques to make a great job here. The wide viewing angle IPS is typically good.

After a look a couple of me as a test Movies & Test documentaries Chosen moving images (where there is, for example, especially dark scenes, camera panning over landscapes, etc.) and a look of some real test strips that I have fished my times from the Internet, are me still quite a few peculiarities noticed:
- The function Dynamic Noise Reduction ensures sporadically for jiggling backgrounds, such as wobbly walls! This looks really, as if a kind of small earthquake would take place in the film! I do not know how the default setting for this feature Ask was, but you get this wobble, but really occurs only sporadically, only way, if you all issues.
So I ask myself again, of course: What the engineers have thought about to implement a function in so immature form ?! Look no films on their own TVs ?!
- One sees in medium fast camera pans over light backgrounds (eg wallpaper, snowy landscapes, etc.) very slight irregularities, actually only in the left half perceptible. When playing a test film with eg monochrome gray or white, I noticed that the lighting does not work 100% uniform. Looks like a little (really minimal) waves from or as a kind of reverse Clouding. I believe this is no banding, but simply minimal irregularities in the front glass, which ensure minimal different brightness perceptions. On the internet I have read in this context of uneven foil glued on the panel, which could have such an effect. Although I would not "glued unevenly" of speaking in my case, it is probably not my fault, but is at a TV (from) this size normally. I had four 48-inch model of different manufacturers lately and all had this effect in slightly different degrees and distribution across the screen. This TV just has it just a bit large area, but while it was in another example, only to a few areas for more pronounced in one half of the picture! But I dare say that most viewers would not notice the well. That is here so just for completeness, but mentioned subject.
- The upper left corner is a little darker, but the fall in normal operation hardly to notice most times when you consciously in the corner looking at a very evenly lit image. That's just always a matter of luck, you will be hard pressed to find a TV that does not at least to some extent a weakness (it was Clouding, banding, Flashlights ... with a Toshiba, which I had recently, for example, was one or a few rows of pixels is not right visible, what one could prove by means of a test pattern with a narrow white border, but would not have had this test image, I would probably never noticed ...)
- The TV had a slight green-red tint. I noticed but honestly just a test film, namely as I the whole screen ausleuchtete up with a 100% yellow. It occurred to me that this was 100% clean somehow not, but a slight tinge had the green. Even a direct color comparison (the colors red, green, blue, magenta, cyan and white side by side in an image) confirmed this impression. In the advanced picture settings you can white balance under the red, green and blue values for light and dark colors to fine-tune what has then brought the success, even after a little trial and error. After I had taken out some green, later occurred to me until the (perhaps only now brought to light) red cast on, but I could also correct in the same way.

The TV is up to 9 cm below the speakers and 7 cm behind the panel relatively thick (for an Edge-lit). Nevertheless, he is with 10 kg refreshingly light. Perhaps behind it a solid suspension of the panel or the greater distance to the rear wall ensures better cooling ... anyway, I can absolutely detect zero Clouding on my panel.

By the way, because I did unfortunately bad experience with the Toshiba 48L3443DG this respect, is here again briefly mentioned: There is no image judder (judder effect). Especially the 24p playback is here once again highlighted, because there apparently in the calculation a lot can go wrong. When Sony but everything runs smoothly! :)

The device is advertised with 200Hz Motionflow XR and X-Reality Pro as image enhancer. I can only say that I am very satisfied with the picture quality. Immediately before, I also had the slightly smaller brother of the W605 there, namely the KDL-48W585B (s my review to click under the heading on my name.); this has "only" 100 Hz Motionflow and a black stand, otherwise the devices are identical. When in doubt, run as camera pans across landscapes something uniform, but since I did not have the W585 compared directly next to it, I must admit (but not sharply!): Perhaps I'm talking about me even one! A real Motionflow for the purposes of insertion of calculated intermediate images do not exist in both candidates anyway. Work is underway with further references only with insertion of black images (backlight scanning). This insertion is by no means dismiss as unimportant. It is responsible for the perception of motion sharpness / blur significantly. To what extent, however, the duplication of the images Black brings more benefits ... So really should especially fast (eg action-packed) Scenes / movements can be displayed sharper, me is there but to be honest not really a difference noticed. Maybe you would see the famous football tail a difference, but to judge that I did not get to (the 100 Hz model is that will not already available).

And again, "by the way": I noticed when so viewed from the side on the top of the television frame, you realize that this is very slightly curved. Namely bent evenly, no bump or so! I conclude that the Panel probably also makes these minimum bend inward. So opposite to the previous Röhrenfenseher who still had a convex glass vault, this is more concave. But not so exaggerated, as can be seen in the one or other exhibit in Elektromakrt his confidence! You can see that only on closer inspection soz. At Third Sight! Nevertheless, the viewing angle is the contrary, provided at least one sits in a halfway reasonable distance, and is likely to further optimize the image impression.

6. Sound
Speaking of football, there is even an extra football mode button, this causes probably only an audible change (and even in sound output from the TV speakers), so will probably suggest a sort of stadium-live atmosphere.
The sound is ... I still vacillate between "aktzepatabel" and "relatively well". One might think that the relatively deep 9 cm at the bottom of the unit would benefit from the internal speakers. Upon closer examination of below but this is not the case. The narrow "Böxchen" take only three centimeters of enclosure depth to complete. The tone is just radiated as with most flat panel TVs down, but he is at least not quite as thin and tinny, as with other devices commonly found. Nevertheless, I would recommend connection to an AV receiver.

7. Selected functions / Detailed considerations

Operation / menu navigation in general
Some getting used to! There is for example an Options button on the not all functions are but achievable. If you want to get into the "right" settings menu, which goes beyond the Home button, then you have to first time about five times to the right shimmy about movies, apps, media servers, among others, until you are finally in the settings. Later, like a being matter, but in the beginning, if you want this and configure and test this, that is a bit annoying. In fact, I am now I do not know how many times to this - come stupid home button, which is very close beneath the arrow-down button, even though I really wanted to navigate with arrow keys called - sorry. Once pressed on Home, you end up only once in the App menu. Then you can indeed go back with Return to get out but the window (eg picture settings), which was opened in front of it, then gone and everything has to be navigated to from the beginning.
Speaking of navigation, so very fast, the menu does not run, it appears now and again as a small waiting bar before it continues. And if, after switching on the TV will directly into the menu, you get first time the "Please wait"!
For all menu functions are packed extremely stylish, I think at least. Seems somehow modern, high-quality (just wanted Sony probably reach!).

Cable TV on the built-in cable tuner
Frankly, I'm glad I do not have to use this constellation! Because as mentioned above, the one with the station search (only free channels) is such a thing. If you, however, would use a smart card (but plugged in my hard disk recorder), already saw the thing perhaps different again (because one or the other booked package (eg HD channels) then would be unlocked).
Either way I think the later operation unclear. For example, the order: If you push ARD HD and ZDF HD on the front seats and then deletes ARD and ZDF (without HD), you have afterwards in the program guide an odd numbered, eg 1. ARD HD, number 2 does not exist, the next program number is then 3. ZDF HD, etc. Furthermore, there is no fast attainable short program overview, as I'm used to, for example from my previous TV or the HDD recorder. There you can on the OK button, a program overview (station list) display and then, and then it also navigate GEG. Use the arrow keys. Not so with Sony. There are only the Guide button, which brings one to the EPG.
Of course there are already a p + and p button on the remote so that you can then through the programs one after zapping, but that's not the same as a station list if I want to move quickly, for example in another more rearward stations but does not know exactly what time slot it has.

Tuner for DVB-T2
According to an assessment on testberichte.de the integrated DVB-T2 tuner H.265 is not HEVC / compatible, but still relies on MPEG. Since you have but agreed in Germany to introduce the transmission from 2016 via HEVC / H.265 and operate nationwide from 2020, the tuner is then no longer usable.

i-Manual
This is a kind of manual that is stored in the TV. Call it is conveniently a single button on the remote control. The i-Manual has clearly grouped into basic functions, content, trouble shooting and an index which precipitated with particularly good because you look there for terms and these can then be selected directly. The whole thing is partly interactive. One can also from the i-Manual to jump out then partly directly with a link to the feature that you want to edit. I like it very much! And comforting a little over the fact that the television Otherwise, no manual included, neither as a PDF or in writing!

WIFI
Works! Even with my restrictive network settings (SSID is not sent by the router). Can an advanced configuration you set everything you need - very good!
LAN I have not tested, but should work well also.

Smart TV / HbbTV
After the TV for the first time been here, he informed me immediately that there would be a software update and asked if I wanted to install it - I found exemplary.
Otherwise Smart TV is not my world, since it mostly comes down to it, etc. extra money for paid subscription services to invest. But that may see each and keep as he wants. There are in any case almost endless apps, over which one can spend money or simply the tab "Movies", what then probably so similar a sort of counterpart to Maxxdome is Sony. I've just going to try the Arte app and it worked even though they then told me that a HQ (High Quality) View would not be available because the download speed is insufficient. But I have to fully exploit a 50 Mbit / s line and can this also means wireless (in the N-standard). In the router is also indicated to me that the TV has joined accordingly. So why this does not work, remains a mystery of the TV!
An open Internet browser I have not seen, even though he should be available lt. Description on the Sony website. Perhaps he is hiding somewhere among the millions Apps. But, on the occasion, my Funkset (Logitech K260 wireless mouse / keyboard) settled eh not connect via USB, has not been recognized, because I imagine surfing via remote control rather cumbersome before.

HDMI-control (CEC)
Works in combination with my Yamaha AV receiver (RX-V375). At least the receiver turns on with when you turn on the TV via its remote control and the volume or muting can be controlled via TV remote control.

ARC Return Channel
An HDMI connection is capable for return path. When I look over the integrieten cable television tuner that Tonrückleitung works to the AV receiver also without objection. But then I realized that, for example, was no sound while looking over the Arte app or a movie from a USB stick. The Sony Support confirmed this to me that way. Not all features are associated with ARC! One would then so either still an optical cable to connect (which I have not tried it yet) or switch to the TV sound. Later, during testing, which file formats is playing the internal media player, I noticed that I still had plötzich back tone on the receiver! It turned out that an AVI file worked with MP3 sound, but the combination MP4 / AAC, and MKV / AAC did not work, or only image. However, the sound could still be output through the internal speakers, only grant non-ARC. Therefore probably not work the Arte app because this in the stream probably also has an AAC sound.
Something strange the whole thing and a pity that it is not working properly!
By the way, I have contacted in this regard the Sony support and loud its information "... is not possible to transfer audio signals from external sources (Media Player, external devices) typically. Why here a signal in mp3 contrary to this rule is looped, is unclear to us. But it is not a bug, that some formats are not transferred, but a general restriction. "

Media Player (USB)
Since I have now already a little prejudged ... So Xvid / MP3 AVI Container running, tested to 576p. MP4 (x264 / AAC, 576p) is running but no sound via ARC, the same applies to MKV (x264 / AAC, 1080p). FLV is not detected. More I have not tested.

8. Otherwise. Ports, Buttons,
The connections are distributed by Sony on the back. Perhaps the most used are more likely to go away to the side, or down, such as HDMI, USB, other connections such as Scart or LAN go backwards.
The control buttons are not exactly user-friendly almost 8 cm wide from the edge away on the back.

9. optics / haptics / IR Remote Control
I find the Sony Bravia comes quite nobly. The slender front shiny black frame ... back at the edge of the TV is initially lean and then runs diagonally in a 7 cm deep form. At the bottom of the speakers there are, as mentioned even 9 cm. In the thickened part to 9 cm are also ventilation slots, otherwise the housing is completely closed and the rear plastic panel makes a good impression. Although the case has a few more centimeters, but acts not thick. And if that causes so comes a great picture here, then it's all right with me! :)
Although the thin silver brushed aluminum stand may be noble, interferes in my opinion but the harmonious appearance a little. To me he is too dominant. I'd rather have a black foot! By the way, the W585, but it is there soz. With plastic coated metal, probably even, aluminum, because it's so easy.
The remote control makes a decent impression qualtitativ, but is borderline low. In other words, for the size quite a lot of keys are gracht, keyword: 'Have fun in the home menu'), where one does not often wanted to go, but accidentally "squashed" has!

10. Power Supply / Power Consumption
Sony has decided to simply outsource the power supply. That is, one has an extra 14x6x3 cm box, which you have to accommodate anywhere. For me, the part will disappear in Fernsehschränkchen. On the other hand, one could a faulty power supply may easily exchange (insofar as the in a few years is still available and not usurious expensive then).
The unit is A ++ certified and is given by an average of 45 watts. After my energy meter and with my settings (while I have the power saving mode not even activated) used it maybe even a little less - impressive! However, I had to run the sound via the AV receiver at the time of current measurement. If you have the TV on, but no (or black) screen, the power consumption drops to about 15 watts. Off it consumes initially for about 15 minutes about 8-9 watts ("hot standby" -> more quickly ready), then the consumption is with my device (which only one-watt steps displays) no longer measurable, it shows me 0 Watt.

11. Summary / Evaluation

Pro:
+ Brilliant Panel, fresh natural colors, excellent contrast, excellent black level (for an IPS panel). The typical LCD motion blur are limited.
+ HDMI Control (CEC) work with my Yamaha receiver.
+ Very low power consumption, EEK A ++, about 45 watts.
+ Modern and high quality acting menu with many useful settings (especially the image setting on, the image is great already in the default settings).
+ I-Manual: A kind of interactive TV in the user manual
+ The sound is typically flat not so great, if only because he radiates downwards, but one of the good - quite usable!

Neutral:
+/- External power supply, bad: It has to accommodate an additional small "box"; well: You could at a power supply failure (often include frühhzeitig defective capacitors in NTs the cause of "broken" television) may receive compensation (which of course implies that the source of error (defective NT) has been located).

Contraindications:
- No sound via ARC-back channel USB or app playback.
- No printed manual, nor as a PDF.
- Menu navigation part a little bit awkward.
- Possibly DVB-T2 tuner incompatible from 2016 (I do not know how this possibly be corrected via software update and can be adapted to the planned in Germany HEVC / H.265 standard.)
(- Slightly unevenly lit brightness (leading to such a kind of minimal reverse Clouding in bright evenly lit scenes) But since I have this effect encountered 48 '' models from two manufacturers in slightly different forms and distributions in four (out of four tested).! I'm assuming that this effect of this size is always somehow present, put the minus in parenthesis and not worth it with.)

The positive points outweigh, or are (for me) significantly overweight; especially the excellent panel and what Sony does with it. Unfortunately, there are a few glitches, taken in sum, MMN exclude a 5-star rating. However you get here on the whole a very decent TV for your money. My recommendation I can give in any case.
