The original games of the Thief series of Looking Glass / Ion Storm I think is great and now have the first two parts of Dark Project and The Metal Age played out on the normal and the highest level of difficulty. Just when I Deadly Shadows started in expert mode, now the new Thief hit the shelves.

After playing and action moderately quite heavily on stock-based Deus Ex: Human Revolution my expectations of the new branch of the Thief series were very high. Therefore, I have moved from Garret Deadly Shadows for the moment at the beginning of the first level with a bow and arrow in the wait state, and quickly bought the new game.

In many other titles (I'm thinking about at the eleven years ago highly anticipated Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness) I have followed the videos and preliminary reports in the relevant magazines / media and related Internet forums. Unfortunately, you messed up by the whole experience, because then you got the impression during play to know all the story and game elements and environments already.

When new Thief I did not make this mistake and have the media coverage thus pursues only marginally. I contented myself with the statement of developers that would indeed change the plot, but would maintain the original player experience, so that fans of old parts would get their money.
In this case, that was a big mistake of mine; the statements of the developer with respect to the recognition value for connoisseurs I disagree absolutely.

1. The history is completely ignored.

In this dramatic form I would have expected but not now. The narrative really begins at zero. I wonder what was going on when the advertised Half Life 3 start with a completely different story and everything would already ignore events. The network would glow, and the developers of Valve would probably her life no longer safe.
Or Imagine JJ Abrams created the announced in the next Star Wars film (which I incidentally find everything awful) a new, young Luke Skywalker, who is notorious for his home planet as a dissolute womanizer. In this case, there would be probably the dozen suicides and angry protests that would have a similar intensity well as when Coca Cola had brewed in the 1980s for a few months for a new prescription.
With the fans of Thief do you enable cookies but. We are just not as many and therefore negligible (even if you want our money!). I am well aware that less than 16 years have passed and many younger Games do not know the history and the old parts no longer want to play. This should have but can easily avoided by a story so far had made at the beginning of the game, because the original story would still have been expanded.
But if there's no rustic Hammerites and Heiden more, and these two groups have in my opinion, but also very turned off the charm of the whole series.

2. This is not my town.

I think two years ago appeared Dishonored. The game I was not bad per se, but is the (I call now times) modern setting (around 1850) a matter of taste.
Now what do the developers of the new Thief? Instead of the old parts to present distinctive medieval dim, but already slightly industrialized setting in pretty contemporary graphics, you just use the environments of a spiritual successor. The graphics are really good, but there is no mood to me, because this setting simply does not convey the darkly menacing and mysterious mood that we know of the origin of titles. The modern style of dress of the figures does the rest, and only the new Garrett acts with its ajar to the original outfit like a medieval debris in these scenes.

3. History / narrative / Garret and Co.

Granted, the story at Deux Ex: Human Revolution was not exactly sparkling. The new Thief is here but one thing underneath. I would be really interested to know how much time was spent on the story. I find the plot just boring and known (again one with amnesia!), Especially my second main character is completely unsympathetic.
The conventional cutscenes lure now but no more behind the stove before. Since it would today again acted correctly idiosyncratic, if you had used the combination of still photographs / images and painted black, scurrying people from the original titles.

4. Gameplay

5. Technology

For me, outweigh quite clearly the negative aspects. Many will hold against me now that I aimed too heavily on the old games and that it is just to be a reboot. From that's exactly the point: If I buy a game that Thief is, then I ought to expect that the essential characteristics of the original are included. Were also promised by the developers, but is an outright lie.

So Wenns is a completely different game, then the developer would just come up with a new name. How about, for example, Stealer?

Hmnein, is not, because then would Thief old fans might look a very accurate and the game will most likely not buy.

Those looking for replacement in old Garrett Universe who should get rather Shadows of the Metal Age or the Dark Mod. They are also free of charge and provides the latter thanks to the Doom3 engine that graphically beautiful medieval flair, which I would have liked in this game.
