Highly recommended for jazz lovers

The Quintet of Shelly Manne was recorded intensively for 3 nights, from September 22 to 24, 1959, in San Francisco at the Black Hawk club. The reissue of this benefit is five CDs. These records show how Shelly Manne was one of the best and most influential drummers in the history of modern jazz. Shelly Manne is a drummer who is not in the sham, almost no solo, but practice the battery as a separate instrument.

This training, although it is not as regular as leader (with trumpeter Joe Gordon, tenor saxophonist Richie Kamuca, pianist Victor Feldman, bassist Monty Budwig and) gives us a high quality bebop. The clean and precise strikes Manne to the drum, the excellent chemistry between the sax and trumpet Kamuca Richie Joe Gordon, gives us much pleasure. The solos are flying high.

The special atmosphere in the club is well rendered in different albums.Du Vol.1 to Vol.5, discs are perfect. Two particulères mentions, one to this excellent tenor saxophonist Richie Kamuca what too few registered; the other in unknown Joe Gordon.

Highly recommended for lovers of jazz "purists".
