When my second Nikkor 28-300mm had the same mistake that the zoom back rather corresponded to a 150mm lens, I asked the Nikon Support, who informed me that due to the internal focusing the 300mm can be achieved only when focus is set to infinity, and in 5m distance, with whom I photographed the effective focal length rather to 160mm, although the lens reports back full 300mm at the camera.
For me it was a knock-out criterion: I need to push not to photograph things at a distance 5m-15m at things on the horizon zoom in, but, and what is achieved at this distance to focal length, is too little for me. So I returned and the second lens.
The remaining properties seemed ok, but in detail I have not looked at because it was clear that this objective is not for me.
